A rhino poacher was killed in an encounter with forest guards at the Kaziranga National Park early today.
A group of poachers at the the Kanchanjuri camp fired on the Kaziranga National Park Protection Force with one of the poachers being killed in the retaliatory firing, KNP Range Officer (Bagori Range) Prodipto Baruah said.
"They fired at the forest force and tried to flee. One poacher was killed in the return fire. He was identified as 24-year-old Bali Mili," Baruah said.
The encounter took place near the Kanchanguri forest camp under Bagori Range around 7-8 km from the NH-37.
A .303 rifle and several rounds of ammunition were recovered from the encounter site, he added.
A search was on for the other poachers with one of them suspected to have been wounded in the firing.
One poacher killed and another one wounded with, presumably, nothing at all on the side of the forest force?
I think that's a sign, poachers.
See ya' in hell. Same goes for the fuckers in Asia that see Ivory and Rhino Horns as ~herbal medicine~
poach the poachers
I can't say I'm happy someone died.
But hopefully it gets a message across
Sell their bodies for research.
Sell their bodies for research.
sell their bodies to herbal medicine makers
Sell their bodies to Lrrr
he needs their human horns
So the poachers tried to shoot the guards? Well can't complain that they failed.
I have no quarrels with this.
Poaching in a national park.
Fucking awful people.
Even if they were driven to such ends by an impoverished standard of living, trying to make it big with prized horns so they don't have to worry about where their next meal comes from, it's almost poetic justice for this to happen to them. They sought to shoot the rhinos for their horns, but in the end they got a sprinkling of bullets for their troubles.
Even if you're trying to support your family, hunting and killing highly-endangered animals is no way to bring bread to the basket.

Worst part is the poachers probably don't even make a lot of money out of this. I'm willing to bet it's the middlemen who makes most of the profits.
All the more reason not to get into the poaching "business". They might start out thinking they'll make a fat sum off a rhino horn, but later on some probably realise "what have I gotten myself into" when they look at the table scraps they get, and even if they try to get out their "business partners" probably have sinister ways of keeping them in the business regardless of the measly cut they'd get.
Also, d'you think African rhino horn finds its way into China? Wouldn't put it past 'em, tbf.
these badasses ride elephants

how does that alone not deter poachers?
"oh we cant shoot you? ok we'll let our elephant crush you"

"Well played, poachers.....well played"
You guys are treating the poachers like a comic book super villan group. Armchair activism is an amazing thing. How exited you can make people about an issue that they will never interact with them directly. What they're doing is wrong, nobody is denying that. Just remember that they are people too.

They hunt animals to extinction for personal gain, that sounds like comic book villainy to me.

Hate to be the devils advocate, but they may have mouths to feed too.

That still doesn't justify an illegal act like poaching endangered species.
Don't they usually just take the horn and not the gigantic meat hulk they killed?
They can't be too hungry.
You just killed a huge animal illegally in a patrolled national park. What do you do: A.) Butcher it and take several tens of kilograms of meat which will spoil quickly and weigh you down or B.) The highly valuable horns which you can sell for enough money to feed your family for weeks, maybe months?
I was at a conference a little while ago, and one of our keynote speakers waxed lyrical about the poaching issue. In his mind people should be tackling the underlying causes rather than investing solely into catching poachers with drones etc. And since said speaker was Ken Banks, he probably knew what he was talking about. (He seems like a bit of an odd choice for a Digital Conservation conference populated by, primarily, conservationists and ecologists, but he knew one of the organisers and started out as a Conservationist)
Lest we forget, the key reasons those poachers are dead was because they were stupid enough to think they could shoot at a bunch of armed guards, and were shot dead as a result.
At this point the animals these guys were going to poach doesn't even come into play - they tried to outgun a force that is better armed and more likely to be better trained than them, and were shot in their stupid faces as a result.
As for the underlying causes - the key one is demand for this useless crap because it makes for a great virility potion or some nonsense. Here's a thought, then - if, going by the logic, chopping off the wing wang of a dangerous animal and using it in your magical potion made you a beast in bed, it should also follow that chopping off the wing wang of the guy who killed the dangerous animal should give you even better performance in bed.
So, my theory is that if we start spreading the rumour that poacher wang is a more superior substitute for rhino penis or something, we might end this problem once snd for all. [sp]I shall accept any and all awards for this marvellous theory by mail, thank you. [/sp]
poach the poachers
Should make it an adrenaline junkie vacation hotspot. Pay to be taken and hunt poachers for a couple days.
Could be just like that pay to sail around the horn of africa baiting pirates while loaded to the teeth idea Russia had
That still doesn't justify an illegal act like poaching endangered species.
It's not about justification, it's about understanding one another.
What goes through someones head to try poaching an animal at a national fucking park?

Especially when the rhinos are endangered and on the verge of extinction. Some species are already extinct for fuck sake
