As we guessed last week in an article entitled “Fail0verflow to announce a PS4 Jailbreak Next week?“, Fail0verflow announced today at the CCC that they owned the PS4 and have Linux up and running on the PS4. They did a very short presentation to showcase the hack, and ran a Pokémon game within Linux on the PS4.
The PS4 hack entry point runs through what seems to be a Webkit exploit. It is likely they are running the hack on a 1.76 PS4 because of that, but it is also very possible that their exploit runs on higher firmwares (and they’re just using the PS4 Webkit 1.76 entry point for convenience).

Fail0verflow promised in their presentation that they would release the Linux patches to compile for the PS4 soon. They however stated that people wishing to use Linux on the PS4 should “bring their own exploit”, adding “PS4 security is crappy enough that you don’t need us for that”. In other words, the exploit they found will not be released.
This is the same group that did the major PS3 Hack with geohot.
I think the actual reason why they won't release the exploit is because they're afraid that Sony will raid their houses like the last time.
No release since sony is a bunch of cunts. fuck
No release since sony is a bunch of cunts. fuck
apparently by what they said the ps4 security is so bad that it wont be a problem
they apparently are just gonna prep the ps4 for homebrew by releasing stuff to use but not releasing the method of how to use it.
And then Sony gets incredibly mad because they think that any and all device freedom leads to piracy

Honestly, for playstations it kinda does. The ps1 - piracy. The ps2 - piracy. The ps3 - started off with Linux intentions and homebrew, but none of that really kicked off and it died, now the only reason to load cfw on a ps3 is to play pirated games. you're kidding yourself if you think people really want a gimped Linux build on a ps3

I am inclined to agree, sadly. It's only now, a good few years since the PS2 (yes, Playstation 2) has died a death that I'm considering putting Linux on mine for shits and gigs. Sony did release an official method of doing that though so it's supported, just like it was supported on the very early PS3s, but the average Joe isn't going to want to slap Linux on their games console in reality..

Fair point for home consoles I suppose. Given they're essentially less powerful PCs, there's not much reason for homebrew on them other than modding console-exclusive games and piracy. Any homebrew that a console could handle would run better and without restriction on a proper computer. Plus, we're long past the point of modding consoles for use as media center systems. They can do that right out of the box nowadays.
For handhelds though there's much more incentive for homebrew. Android and iDevices are good for software variety and customization, but they lack the native controls for games, and they lack AAA developer support. Meanwhile, dedicated handheld consoles like the 3DS and Vita have the AAA market and the controls, but they're far less flexible.
I'd kill for an Android-based handheld with AAA support.
wow now people can unlock the full power of the cell processor! or nowadays its just an intel processor!
amazing!
Seriously though I never heard more marketing bullshit, even from apple, than sony put out about the shitty cell processor.

There's no intel processor in those consoles, it's all AMD.

It was difficult, not shitty. The thing was pretty powerful when used right.
Also, PS3 was IBM, PS4 is AMD.
There's no Intel here.

The Cell, for its time, was immensely powerful. It wasn't just marketing hype. The few clusters and supercomputers that tried using it were pretty fucking snappy until the price of high end x86_64 dropped enough to justify slapping shitloads of those into a cluster.
It was just a nightmare to program for as it didn't remotely resemble any architectures of the time. It's a shame it never took off, a competing architecture for hpc would give Intel a reason to work harder rather than just doubling the AVX vector size every so often. (Not that that's an easy task mind)

Look at console hacking in past generations and tell me that's an unfounded concern.
I don't know why Sony has such a big issue with homebrew on their consoles. It's not piracy and effectively harmless so it's not as if it costs them any revenue. Besides, what right do they have to bar people from tooling around with their own consoles?

piracy can kill consoles. see the dreamcast
piracy can kill consoles. see the dreamcast
Dreamcast died because of the PS2, plain and simple. The PS2 and PS1 were pirated to hell and back and were the best selling consoles of all time next to the Nintendo DS which also was pirated heavily.

They might be worried that homebrew users won't buy games, since game sales are much more important for revenue than the hardware itself.

So? Isn't it the business of homebrew users, not Sony's? It's not as if homebrew users make a profit from it.
piracy can kill consoles. see the dreamcast
Nah, since they didn't sell much hardware in the first place.
If it were easy to pirate games for, then they'd atleast had been able to sell lots of hardware.
Sony owned them with their much bigger marketing budget, and riding on the hype & success of the PS1.
Sega also somewhat fucked up with their console before the Dreamcast, so they had to up their game, but they didn't.
7000 lines of code were changed/added to the linux kernel for this to happen.
They deserve some mad re$pect.

I had a dreamcast, honestly it didn't hold a candle to the PS2. PS2 was THE console. If you didn't have a PS2 your family was either not able to afford it or something was wrong with you.
No console will ever be as great as the ps2 was honestly.

People honestly don't care about homebrew or wanting linux or having freedom of their hardware, it will be used for piracy for the vast majority of the people who take part in using custom firmwares on home consoles

joke's on them because this time around there's nothing to pirate

You have no idea how useful the backup tools were for the PS3.
Sometimes tools that can be used for piracy are just 1000x better than the official service.
Like when i crack a game i bought because the DRM is shit or when i torrent a show i could watch on cable because it's better quality and has no commercials.
Good thing is the companies sometimes get that and step up their game.

It was the opposite for me.
Everyone had an Xbox and I was the werido with the PS2. :saddowns:
Funny thing it despite being a massive PS fanboy back in the day, I just don't feel it anymore. I find nothing about the PS4 that makes me want to go and get one. Even this hacking stuff for it is kind of meh to me.
piracy can kill consoles. see the dreamcast
The PS2 killed the Dreamcast not only because the Dreamcast was quite under-powered compared to the rest of that generation, but also because the PS2 was, at the time, the cheapest DVD player on the market. Among the other reasons already listed, of course.

Xbox sold better in some regions than the PS2.
But they both handed it to Dreamcast, while the Gamecube picked up the rest and left only sad leftovers for the Dreamcast:

Wasn't pirating games for the Dreamcast as easy as copying the game onto another disc? Or did i completely make that up in my head?

[Del]I'd say it's more likely they don't want to drop a currently not-quite-public WebKit exploit.
Or have to support users who aren't sufficiently technical.[/del]
No need for speculation. They don't want to be involved with hacking the PS4, just making Linux work on it.
