While the details are still coming in, Shaw Communications has announced that it plans to purchase Wind Mobile, which turned six years-old today, for $1.6 billion CAD.
The Calgary-based cable provider does not currently operate a wireless network, though it purchased a small amount of AWS-1 spectrum during the 2008 auction that it later optioned to Rogers for $350 million.
While Wind Mobile has been the rumoured target of many acquisitions, including a $700 million USD deal in 2013 with Verizon the US carrier now denies, it has forged its own path within the difficult, incumbent-heavy Canadian wireless market.
Shaw’s deal to purchase Wind will require approval by Industry Canada and the Competition Bureau, though it should go through without issue since Shaw does not have any notable wireless assets.

Came in here to try learn something about Canadian phone companies. Found out that even their news sites are syrup-based.

I just hope Shaw doesn't try to screw over existing customers..
Otherwise, my only other option would be Googles Project Fi (which I learned about today); however its still way to early in its life.
Fuck I hate Canada sometimes.
Fuck you CRTC and fuck you Shaw, Bell, and Rogers.
Fuck all of yall you exploitative dicks.
Fuck no.
I don't use Wind but it seems to have very good pricing if you're only looking for inner city service.
My bet is it will go downhill once Shaw get's their dirty hands on it.
Oh for fucks sake, the single refuge from all the shitty ISP's and TSP's gets bought out.
May as well be using tin cans and string at this point

Yeah. They'll do what the other big cable and ISP companies in Canada do.
They'll fuck their customers because they know the competition is some of the most shallow in the western world.
here's a cool fact about shaw: i know a local isp that operates around coastal bc and offers services that piggyback off of shaw's lines. for a few years they offered prices that were about half what shaw was offering with no monthly bandwidth limits and speeds that were a tad faster than the equivalent shaw packages.
shaw recently hiked the prices on all of their lines about 200% and even downgraded speeds on some lines despite the pricehike.
that isp now is forced to offer service that are only just barely cheaper than shaw's services and they even had to cut out a higher end plan that was straight up not viable with the sudden price hike.
there needs to be regulation in the canadian telecom market, the crtc needs to get off their fucking asses and do something. the worst part is that there's no publicly available crtc email for these sorts of complaints, only a form on the crtc website that explicitly states NOT to send them complaints about internet services. the irony of the country-wide regulatory commission responsible for telecommunications not having a fucking e-mail is such a baffling concept to me, it simply reassures my opinion that the crtc has no intention to actually bother doing anything about this.

the crtc defines broadband internet as 5mbp/s down and 1mbp/s up.
we pay $70/mo for internet service that only has 0.5mbp/s up.

Leave and go to lightspeed? Anyways,
God fucking DAMNIT there goes my $35 4gb/mo because Shaw will CERTAINLY fuck us in the arse.
also Welcome to fucking Comcast because I hear Shaw is as bad as them...
On the plus side, maybe this means there will be more than four places you can use Wind.
Unbreakable 40 was amazing.
And now it's about to die.
Goodbye cheap unlimited data tethering.

If anything I'd think Rogers would be closer to Canada's Comcast than Shaw.

Nah Shaw is pretty much a copy of Comcast.
They even use a lot of the same design features for the cable/internet services.

Rogers is more like AT&T from what I understand. I had them as a carrier for years until I just got so fed up with their constant telemarketing trying to upsell me on bullshit. Switched to Koodo and I haven't looked back.

Rogers is better than Telus, and Koodo is Telus.

I'd argue differently. Anything is better than Rogers, Telus might be bad but Rogers sucks cock.
And then there is Bell, gonna switch from them when I move out cause their terrible

Pretty much anyone is better than Telus. Almost every single person I've talked to about Telus said they wish they didn't but they only have it because A) they're one of the cheapest and/or B) It's their only option. I have Telus and I barely get a signal in my fucking basement in the middle of the suburbs whereas my sister is on Rogers and gets full bars pretty much everywhere except out in the sticks. I guess Bell must use Telus's network because I have the same problem with them on my work phone.

I use Telus for my internet and TV and they were by far the best choice I had.
Shaw is also terrible in my personal experience. At my old house we bought 50mbs, rarely got above 10, payed out the ass for it. I pay a fairly reasonable price, but it's not great either

And it's funny, everyone I've talked to about Shaw says good things but they have to pay out the ass for it, myself included. I'd almost say I'd swear by them if they didn't charge so fucking much.
When I lived in Vancouver I would fucking prefer shaw internet over Telus any day of the week. The package options I had were way better than Telus.
