• A year and a half of job hunting, is it time to just join the army?

So I've been actively looking for a job for a year and a half now and every interview I go to (about once a month, twice if it's near a holiday), it's the same story. I go in, usually a line of people waiting for an interview, "We'll call you about the job in about a week". A week later, I have to call them, and they tell me they filled the position. But just recently, I think I've finally hit an all time low. I was applying for target, they were hiring for seasonal. I go in, interview as usual, leave for a few days and now I see on facebook a person I knew from school who I know had a criminal record of shoplifting got hired over me. I'm 19, I have no work experience, I'm slowly losing my list of contacts I can use, and now I'm apparently worse than a shoplifter. Is it time to just give up living a normal life and join the army?
You should talk to a recruitment officer and make an informed decision. Don't just join because it seems like there is nothing else for you to do..
I'll employ you for £10 an hour to clean my house.

Either way talk to someone other than Facepunch so you know what you are getting into.
Got the same thing, currently starting to do evening schools. It fucking sucks almost all jobs are for students or for people with a shit load of diplomas.
Either way talk to someone other than Facepunch so you know what you are getting into.
When you have a personal decision in life to make, you talk to your friends, even just for a little bit of advice. And I happen to know there are people on facepunch in the army.

what education do you have? just a high school diploma?
go to school
job, but something tells me a commute from minnesota to where ever you live that uses a pound is not an easy one.
You live in Minnesota? WELL YOU'VE GOT A JOB EVERY WINTER!! Just scrape people's driveways of snow.
Any many people here are complete dumbasses, but they'll still tell you what to do.
I'm sorry you have such a low opinion of people at facepunch. I've been here for quite a while and find them usually friendly well informed people.
what education do you have? just a high school diploma?
High school diploma. I finished a year of college but I refuse to continue that until I find a job. Otherwise debt will just pile up and there's no guarantee finishing college will make me any less jobless.
offer your services to the local ladies [editline]11th November 2010[/editline] like cleaning their houses [editline]11th November 2010[/editline] or fulfilling their sexual needs [editline]11th November 2010[/editline] for money
I'm pretty much in the same boat. Ever since I got laid off almost a year ago I haven't been able to find a job and I've been turned down more times than I care to remember. Only difference is that I'm going to college, so it isn't that bad.
DON'T. Go off and get a real job, you'll be miserable in the army.
You must be doing something wrong in your CV or interviews. Talk to a job advisor or something.
Fuck army..... MARINES HOORAH!!!!!
DON'T. Go off and get a real job, you'll be miserable in the army.
Misery is being lower than a shoplifter to society. [editline]11th November 2010[/editline]
Fuck army..... MARINES HOORAH!!!!!
Any big difference between the 2? Marines certainly have the less retarded of the 2 commercials.
I would honestly try for a community college first. Leaving college after a year to avoid paying back students loans is bad excuse. You would have probably got many of those jobs had you finished college.
Joining the Armed Forces is a great way to make money you might not make a lot but they will pay for your room and board and then pay for college once your out. You do not have to be in the line of fire either if you don't want to get shot at join the Navy or Airforce.
just saying that every one i know that came out of the army wish they never joined and it even got 2 people i know addicted to drugs. Im not saying its going to happen to you but i just would not risk it
Join the army if you think that you are a person who'd like it there. If you like exercising, shooting, being commanded by dickwads, why not go there. Else, get a fucking education. If you don't have any talent (and seeing as you have no job, you have none) nor at least some papers, you are fucked. And it doesn't have to be anything special, learn to be a plumber or repair TV:s.
The military to me seems pretty good at giving people jobs of some sort. I mean they do advertise that they have like 100+ job positions that they offer. I mean if you become a soldier and go on tour somewhere, after you come back, it might be difficult because I hear the military is actually not too great at helping vets out. I'm not 100% about what goes on when you are like on reserve or something, but it can't be probably even half as good paying as if you were active with something. But yeah, I would give it a try because it's productive no matter what you do. It's better than living off unemployment.
Well, why don't you just skip the middle man and study on a military collage?
I'm sorry you have such a low opinion of people at facepunch. I've been here for quite a while and find them usually friendly well informed people.
You can always be a comedian.
See you in your grave.
There is no easy solution if you want to get out of this situation. Regardless of whatever you do it's gonna be hard as fuck and it will suck horsedick and there is nothing in the world you can do to change that, but you gotta choose. Military, or go back to college. Education isn't guaranteed to get you a job right away, but is is guaranteed to put you ahead in line of shoplifting douchebags. Deal with the loans - Everybody else does it. Or if you really think the military will be fun, by all means enlist. Personally, that option is nowhere on my world map though.
Ok, 2 things I see wrong with that. 1, recruitment officers are sales men basically, so if I want to join the army, and he wants me to join the army, that leads to joining the army. 2, if there's nothing left to do, then yes, it is time to do the last thing to do.
So long as you take any talk of how great the job is with a grain of salt, they can be somewhat helpful i.e. asking if a particular career path gives experience of any use outside the military e.g. technician of some kind.
If you can't afford school, I'd suggest joining the navy. They'll pay for your school and you'll get a nice paycheck.
High school diploma. I finished a year of college but I refuse to continue that until I find a job. Otherwise debt will just pile up and there's no guarantee finishing college will make me any less jobless.
don't join then with only a year of college, you'd probably start off as an E-1 or E-2, which are both privates. meaning you'll be treated like shit, get shitty pay, and you're much more likely to be sent to afghanistan or iraq. just keep looking for a regular job, and if you want to join the army then get a bachelors degree and commission as an officer. [editline]11th November 2010[/editline] if you want to join the military as an enlisted, then try the air force or navy.
