Deus Ex movie writer says it won't be another shitty video game film
This week at San Diego Comic-Con, the film’s co-writer C. Robert Cargill spoke about the challenges posed by the growing desire to adapt video games to film, giving a better idea of how the writing duo will be turning a sprawling, open-ended role-playing game into a streamlined film.
Some may already claim that video game movies are certain to be the next ‘superhero’ phenomenon in Hollywood, but Cargill admitted that he was less than confident when the minds behind the game approached him about penning a live-action movie. But the more he learned about the game’s universe, the more he realized that the publisher wasn’t going to be satisfied with a mediocre adaptation:
“It’s not a video game movie, it’s a cyberpunk movie.
“Eidos Montreal has given us a lot of freedom in terms of story; they want this movie to be ‘Blade Runner.’ We want this movie to be ‘Blade Runner.’ ”
High hopes to be sure, but there’s no question that the Deus Ex franchise shares the same bleak view of science fiction as Blade Runner – even though Cargill maintains he and Derrickson aren’t looking to mimic director Ridley Scott’s noir game-changer. It’s the overarching elements of the fiction that Cargill seems most ruled by: blending of humanity with technology, a darker future for the world, and corporate espionage.
I want to believe
I don't want it to be bladerunner. I want it to be Deus Ex.
this film... our expectations might increase to the point where they may not be able to fullfill them

Do you have a single fact to back that up?

Have you seen what happened with the mobile spinoff game? If this movie is bad, there will be protests.
Didnt the writer used to be on spill.com?
The fans are starting to get desperate.

you better double-check your facts, that writer is an impostor. Spector doesn't know him; what has he worked on?

Why contain expectations? Let them spill over into the forums.
The fans are starting to get desperate.
Of course they're desperate. They can smell the expectations, and the sound they'll make rattling their keyboards will serve as a warning to the rest.
Well it's not like he's going to say "our movie will be pretty bad, don't watch it."
Of course they're desperate. They can smell the expectations, and the sound they'll make rattling their keyboards will serve as a warning to the rest.
i hope you're not underestimating the problem; the others may not shut up as soon as you think
i'm more concerned about the director - i must admit i've been somewhat disappointed in the quality of other film adaptations

what the fuck is this thread
They want the movie to be Bladerunner? We already have a movie like that, it's called Bladerunner.
Seriously though. All they need to do is make a good movie set in the Deus Ex world, not makes some half assed story adaptation.
this writing is intensifying to the point where we might not be able to contain it

on a more serious note, I hope they stick with the prod, just in case they're police
Going to start playing Deus Ex: HR again!
Well, as long as they use the universes lore and don't copy the games exactly it should be fine.
Someone wrote a review for bladerunner and it really can apply to Deus Ex.
A true science fiction story or film is about ideas, not spaceship battles, futuristic gadgets, or weird creatures. "Blade Runner" fully qualifies as this in its examination of the impact of technology on human society, existence, and the very nature of humanity itself. These themes are set in a fairly basic detective story that moves slowly but gradually builds power as the viewer is immersed in a dystopian futuristic Los Angeles.
Among the themes explored are the following: - The dehumanization of people through a society shaped by technological and capitalistic excess. - The roles of creator and creation, their mutual enslavement, and their role reversal, i.e., the creation's triumph over its creator. - The nature of humanity itself: emotions, memory, purpose, desire, cruelty, technological mastery of environment and universe, mortality, death, and more. - Personal identity and self-awareness. - The meaning of existence.
Deus Ex HR was fairly philosophical and shared a lot of the themes bladerunner had. So when they say want it to be like bladerunner I'm hoping they mean by its story telling style and overall themes. Then add a lot of the conspiracies that the games had and you can go all kinds of directions.
so it'll be a flashy rip off of Blade Runner that nobody wanted. Can't be worse than Doom.
i'm just hoping the color filter won't be orange or lemon-lime
I'll believe it when I see it. The kind of movies produced to meet expectations - like being like Bladerunner, making X amount of dosh, expanding a franchise - I generally like a lot less than those made because someone wanted to make them.
I guess if it turns out bad the writer will be a Deus Ex writer.
They ought to have gotten James Swallow involved. He wrote the Icarus Effect book and IMO that was downright fantastic and much better than DXHR in terms of story and characters.

Do you have any idea how easy it will be for them to make a new colour filter? All they have to do is find a very large prime number and multiply.

In all honesty HR doesn't really explore those elements into any heavy degree; they also have no idea what the hell they're trying to say transhumanism is, and keep trying to just associate it with a bunch of things happening today that don't relate (I.E abortion).
In comparison to the original, it would hammer in the points it was trying to make. Though they mostly were on government and rule and really didn't mention anything about augmentations themselves; the only time it's really brought up is character building for Gunther and Anna.
Oh yes.

I hope they mean it as an memorable cyberpunk movie that is remembered in decades to come
Adam Jensen needs to be played by Elias Toufexis. If not, it isn't a Deus Ex movie
