The 10.6-inch Surface, powered by Windows RT, will go on sale on October 26th and will be priced starting at $499 for the 32GB version without Touch Cover and a 32GB version with the Touch Cover for $599. Microsoft is also offering 64GB model for $699 with a Touch Cover included. The 9.3mm thin tablet weighs just 1.5lbs and includes a built-in kickstand and vapor-deposited (PVD) magnesium case.Microsoft listed its Surface pricing at its online Microsoft Store this morning, indicating that pre-orders will be available shortly. The company has also listed the prices for its Touch Cover, at $119.99 each, and Type Cover for $129.99. Update: Microsoft's online store listing has now gone offline.
http://www.theverge.com/2012/10/16/3271243/microsoft-surface-tablet-pricing-availability Well shit, there goes all my money. [sp]I was seriously hoping something around the 300-400$ mark[/sp]
If I was to buy one I'd probably get the cheapest one + the type cover (that's the real keyboard isn't it?). But fuck, 130$ for a keyboard? I don't see it being a sucess with this prices, with the 7 inch craze right now and the iPads brand name and years of 3rd party support, pricing it at the same price seems silly to me.
It has virtually no apps, it's not worth it. All you can do is check email and browse the web, you could get a cheaper Android tablet and it'd be able to do more.
Windows on ARM. No unsigned binaries Ew ew ew. Could as well get an iPad.
It has virtually no apps, it's not worth it. All you can do is check email and browse the web, you could get a cheaper Android tablet and it'd be able to do more.
That was p. much the situation with macs for awhile. but people still bought them.
Wouldn't buy, not until surface tablet with regular windows 8 (x86 architecture)
No unsigned binaries
That's probably not going to last long. By that I mean the protection.
That was p. much the situation with macs for awhile. but people still bought them.
Macs have a strong brand and marketing and always have. Microsoft has very little hardware experience that is not XBOX. Their brand means very little when it comes to portable devices. So unless they do some really extreme marketing and everyone for some reason decides to get their tablet it won't be too popular like their windows phone. It's just there.
That's probably not going to last long. By that I mean the protection.
I dunno but doesn't this already have that palladium chain of trust shenanigans beginning at the CPU with bootloader and up everything being signed? Sounds quite tough to fiddle with.
Ah well, I guess the low price rumors were too good to be true. Won't be getting one at that price. I'm not buying a locked device for that price (assuming $ to £ + VAT). If Surface PRO can hit £500, it might be in the running, as I'm in the need for a portable device for Office, but the Clevo W110ER is in the £500 price range and that gives me a choice of touchscreen vs dedicated GPU. A tablety tablet (Windows RT) is a luxury for me and £250 was the tipping point between an affordable luxury vs excessive.
that thing better get jailbroken.
I am not a fan of Apple at all but even I see that if I HAD to buy either this or an iPad I would take the iPad(if "no unsigned binaries" is true)
I really don't think the non-i5 surface will stand a chance. Compatibility with x86 windows programs is really the only thing Microsoft's got going for them in the tablet department
So the RT (ARM) version costs 500$ ? Wow, fuck that. I'm not buying an ARM tablet for that ridiculous price.
Ehh, the non x86 one is shite. Even if you did get it jailbroken you still wouldn't have a large amount of apps. That said, I love the i5 one. It's everything I want tablets to be, and it's the best use for Windows 8. It's like all those third-party ones that are basically a netbook's guts inside a plastic case that looks like a thick tablet, only really good.
There's always something to whine about
There's always something to whine about
is that supposed to be some sort of pun suggesting linux
I'm still buying one. I wasn't impressed with how Android worked on my Xoom nor did I use any of the Android specific features. My HP Touchpad just collects dust. The keyboard solution is perfect for me too, and I like Metro just fine. Sure, it has no apps, but how often do you really use a tablet for more than web browsing, or watching stuff on Netflix, or any of that fun stuff? I certainly like the concept of the x86 Surface, but I have no use for real desktop apps on a 10.6 inch screen.
just buy an ipad instead
$599 us dollars I got my 32gb HP Touchpad for £120, even when those things weren't on sale they weren't that expensive were they?
-Windows 8 has no apps -$599 US dollars oh dear

and microsoft said the x86 version will be in the ultrabook price range and guess what? i've never seen an ultrabook sell for under a thousand dollars. surface will flop due to high prices
and microsoft said the x86 version will be in the ultrabook price range and guess what? i've never seen an ultrabook sell for under a thousand dollars. surface will flop due to high prices
the funniest thing about ultrabooks is that the macbook air is still the cheapest despite companies like Acers putting out their usual turdbooks which still cost more than a mac
who the hell still cares about APPS om my gode APPLICATION for my PORTABLE COMPUTE DEVICE makes me so DAMP OMG if i cannot download my free iButtscratcher app which is a badly compressed image of pete griffie from the family gyu who say buttscratcher!!! when u tap his face ill never buy your BAD touch DEIVCE wtf im a consumer I have rights! Wanna know how many 3rd party apps are useful enough that I use them daily? 2. and they are on all systems.
-Windows 8 has no apps -$599 US dollars oh dear
$599 with a cover that doubles as keyboard, let's not make it worse than it is. The 32GB iPad is $599 in itself without a cover/keyboard combo, though it has got a higher resolution display (or at least we must assume so).
the funniest thing about ultrabooks is that the macbook air is still the cheapest despite companies like Acers putting out their usual turdbooks which still cost more than a mac
But the real question is, does it come in hot pink Also Cheaper than a macbook air: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store?Action=pd&Locale=en_US&SiteID=msstore&WT=mc_id.mercent&mr:ad=8683161413&mr:adType=pla&mr:filter=20388564173&mr:keyword=%7Bkeyword%7D&mr:match=%7Bmatchtype%7D&mr:referralID=NA&mr:trackingCode=45A719B2-EC65-E111-B2BE-001B21A69EB0&origin=pla&productID=244285800
