The latest hiccup in the government's plan to resettle 25,000 refugees — a mix of privately sponsored and government-assisted refugees — by March 1 comes as 11,613 Syrian refugees have already arrived in Canada since Nov. 4 when the Liberals were sworn into power.

Immigration Minister John McCallum, who took part in a question-and-answer session with the Canadian Club of Toronto on Wednesday, said afterward the requests are coming directly from resettlement agencies, not city officials. "They are finding that they need a little [more] time to hire more people," McCallum said in Toronto Wednesday morning. "My officials are helping them with that process, and they also need a little more time to find medium-term housing."

That means that some government-assisted refugees will have to stay in temporary accommodations near the Toronto and Montreal airports for a few extra days before travelling to their host cities, said the minister on Wednesday. "I am told that this will be resolved in a matter of a few days, not longer than that," McCallum said. "At the present time, four communities, Vancouver, Ottawa, Toronto and Halifax, have asked us to delay new arrivals for a few days," said Theodora Jean, a spokeswoman with the Immigration Department in an email to CBC News.

"The flow from the airplanes is not slowing down at all. It's just that if certain towns or cities need a pause, there will be other places in Canada who will receive the refugees," he said. According to information posted on the government's website, nearly 600 Syrian refugees are expected to arrive at the Toronto and Montreal airports by the end of today. But details for flights planned for Jan. 21-27 are currently unavailable.

McCallum said on Wednesday though it's been a "challenge" to resettle a large number of government-assisted refugees, the "bigger challenge" is to ensure their successful settlement and integration into Canadian society. During the election campaign, the Liberals promised to resettle 25,000 government-assisted refugees by the end of 2015. But shortly after taking office, lowered the target to 10,000 saying most of those would be privately sponsored.
**SOURCE** It's a damn good thing we didn't commit to 25000 before the end of the year or we would of been double fucked. While there's a lot of cheap apartments on the market they're mostly single or two bedroom suites which are too small for the typically large families that are flying in.
This gives me a bad feeling. I hope everything runs smoothly and we don't end up with a logistical disaster on our hands.

So that we can look relevant. "Hey look guys, we are helping!"
You most likely will, just like Europe. Why are these migrants even being flown to the other side of the world?
It won't be anything like Europe, in this instance. Though it will undoubtedly put an economic burden on the country, Canada is very much capable stemming the flow when it becomes unmanageable, Europe has denied itself that control.
You most likely will, just like Europe. Why are these migrants even being flown to the other side of the world?
Because we can, it seems. The selection process is interesting though. You don't apply. You simply get a phone call or similar and if you want to go you can. Supposedly a lot of refugees chosen have turned the offer to live here down because it was too far from home.

They're apparently desperate refugees but I always see them feeling it out for the best opportunities. Poland and Portugal open their gates and hardly any come, Syrians that found employment in South America demanded to be sent back to Lebanon, etc. [editline]22nd January 2016[/editline] and we're going to be taking 50,000 more over the course of the year. Meanwhile we have thousands of homeless veterans and a collapsing dollar.

Most of the refugees currently travelling through Europe come from Turkey, which was already sheltering them from the war, so it's not like it's urgent to find a place to stay.
You most likely will, just like Europe. Why are these migrants even being flown to the other side of the world?
Because apparently europe is trying to actively destroy its culture as quickly as possible for some reason
Because apparently europe is trying to actively destroy its culture as quickly as possible for some reason
Dark evil forces just doing it for the lulz.
why the fuck wouldn't you try to go to the best country you can?
From their standpoint it makes sense, in the same way corporations doing everything they can to save money makes sense. Doesn't make it any less of a shit thing to do. Countries are, by choice (and let's not start with the international law shit, the US is a demonstration that effectively blocking refugees from entering from a legal standpoint is either [A] legal or [B] overlooked), opening their doors to give you a place to stay because the country you're in is a war zone and instead of making things easier on everyone and accepting whatever location you were sent to (to, you know, balance the massive influx of refugees) you make a fuss because you want to be in a "better" country.
Because apparently europe is trying to actively destroy its culture as quickly as possible for some reason
Totally dude
and we're going to be taking 50,000 more over the course of the year. Meanwhile we have thousands of homeless veterans and a collapsing dollar.
Every country that has taken refugees has homeless people.
Because apparently europe is trying to actively destroy its culture as quickly as possible for some reason
What a ridiculous and embarrassing thing to say.
That photo is pretty.
