Skydiver becomes first to land without parachute (landed on a safety net)
CALIFORNIA: American Luke Aikins leapt into the void at 25,000 feet on Saturday (Jul 30) with no parachute or wingsuit, becoming the first skydiver to land safely on the ground in a net.Aikins - who has done movie stunts - spent a year and a half preparing the death-defying feat, plummeting at 120 miles per hour in Simi Valley, California.
Fox television broadcast the two-minute jump live on an hour-long reality TV special.
Videos capturing the live coverage of the historic stunt are being shared on social media.
"Pay attention to the science and the math behind this. And we'll show you what's possible," said Aikins, 42, who runs a skydiving school in Washington state, just before taking off.
There was a lot of method behind Aikins' madness: he has made more than 18,000 skydiving jumps.
In all those years, he needed to use his emergency chute on 30 occasions.
Also an airplane and helicopter pilot, Aikins made his first tandem jump when he was 12, following with his first solo leap four years later.
Back on the ground, with his wife and family, he seemed stunned at his own bit of history-making.
Nooooooope.
Interesting that they were able to do this, but still.... nooooope.
the truth is that he used his massive fucking balls to slow his fall to technically he was in no danger to begin with
Amazing
After he hit the net I thought he was going to roll out before it could completely catch the fall
him explaining it

Those must be some really low-density balls to slow his fall...
Testicles so large they landed as soon as he jumped.
Here's a guy landing in a pile of cardboard boxes. However, he's using a wingsuit, so the impact wouldn't as great.

That's insane. I wonder what aliens would think if they saw us doing this? A species that evolved over millions of years to eventually develop aircraft capable of flying them up 25,000 feet, then just jumping out of a plane and landing on a net! He had no guidance system, no backup plan, he had to actually steer his way into the net to survive. That's insane.

"This species is fucking stupid, we should do them a favor and glass their planet"
When I heard about him planning to do this on the radio I thought he would either miss or just go straight through the nets and smash into the ground due to his high velocity.
Damn it's awesome that he succeeded.

Statistically speaking out of 7 Billion people it would be MORE surprising if a few people didn't at least try this.

that's if they don't see us as the most batshit insane, adaptive [del]cool guys[/del] shitlords this side of the galaxy
Yo that's cool.

alternatively they'll see our movies about us kicking alien asses and think that it was an actual documentary or some shit and be scared away from us
tbh I'd rather do this than rely on my parachute opening
I know it's perfectly safe but the idea of this is much simpler
Skydiving is neat as fuck.
Wing suits are on my long term to do list. Even just the training for regular skydiving would cost me $3000 then there's another 190 jumps, then wing suit training and another $8000 for equipment.
I love how the medic like first goes in to give him a once over then immediately is just like "HIGH FIVE MAN!"
This might sound weird, but this isn't the highest altitude from which a person has fell (without a chute) and survived.

Becoming a space faring species requires a lot of risk taking. If they are in a position to see us doing this they'd just think of the good old days of their own species.
i'm pretty sure i speak for most people when i say :disgust:
what's that smoke on the feet of the guys wearing the black clothing?

So that the people on the ground can see them when they're higher up.
So uh, the vid got removed due to copyright claims.
Anyone got a mirror?

Awesome. So if a alien space faring species shows up and pulls the "we come in peace card" and they really don't we just need to show them Independence Day.
