Police say a 57-year-old man died in hospital Thursday morning after he was beaten last month while trying to prevent teenage suspects from stealing a pumpkin from a Gatineau, Que., grocery store.
An autopsy is scheduled for Friday in Montreal.
The man had suffered head injuries in the assault, police said.
A 19-year-old man has been charged with assault causing bodily harm.
Police spokesman Pierre Lanthier said there's a "major possibility" the charge will be upgraded. The Crown is reviewing the case.
Cops say two men were seen fleeing with the pumpkin from an IGA grocery store on Sept. 29 when the man stopped them.
Police have not identified the deceased or the accused.
Gatineau is located across the river from Ottawa.

Because of his age it's possible he died from something unrelated, which is why they have to do the autopsy first.
