Pots N Hands, which advertises “home cooked meals,” opened in the community of 1,700 70 kilometres south of Winnipeg just four months ago. Ever since, alleges owner Dave Claringbould, he and his partner have been assailed by homophobic slurs, such as a customer asking if his plate of food was diseased. “They should get the hell out of here. I don’t really like them — the service and who they are,” resident Aaron Kleinsasse told the Winnipeg Free Press this week.
Much like the backlash against provincial anti-bullying legislation coming out of Steinbach, Manitoba; Morris is deep within Manitoba's Hutterite region. Another shining moment for rural Manitoba!
I think I read in an article recently that Manitoba is one of the most religious provinces in Canada.
Shoot me. Now. :suicide:
I think I read in an article recently that Manitoba is one of the most religious provinces in Canada.
Huge hutterite/mennonite presence.
Get your shit together Manitoba We don't tolerate this here in Canada.
Get your shit together Manitoba We don't tolerate this here in Canada.
Some obviously do.
Even as someone who is generally Conservative I think this kind of bigoted behaviour is disgusting, it tarnishes our nation to see this kind of shit going on here.
wow so manitoba is not only the most boring province possible but now the worst one overall why would you ever live in manitoba
wow so manitoba is not only the most boring province possible but now the worst one overall why would you ever live in manitoba
You should try going to winnipeg, it's like someone looked at surrey and was like "I want an entire city to be like this, but worse". There's mass amounts of racism, constant violence, and the police are more corrupt than the futurama version of Nixon
Winnipeg is the best city ever in canada said no one ever. Seriously, this place is a shithole.
Disgusting. Being driven out of business by people with serious mental sickness is troubling indeed; on one hand I despise the bigots for bringing misfortune upon the heads of the restaurant owners, but on the other hand I pity the bigots since they are mentally ill. There should be a nation-wide PSA stating that homophobia and bigotry are mental illnesses, and that anyone experiencing the symptoms should confine themselves to mental institutions for proper treatment before reintergrating into society. If anything, it'd bring more business to places of mental health, and more money could be invested into mental health research. NIMH in particular should receive grants to help find the cure to bigotry, which could then be sent throughout the world. Even if the population of entire nations have to be institutionalized, it must be done; only when the final bigot has been purified will the good work have reached it's rightful conclusion, and humanity can have nice things.

You're demeaning the serious issues that arise around mental health, as well as in some respects insulting the people for having misconceptions due to an isolated life, poor diversity of education, and general ignorance. They're ignorant, not ill, and despite what some people think ignorance is not a disease, though it can be a plague.

It was exceptionally well-spoken.
It's just the old timey rural mindset. Social change doesn't happen instantly for everyone takes time for it to trickle down. No I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying that I'm not sure why you guys are so surprised about it

In environs like the home and school, which are potentially free from potential vaccinations, the conceptual diseases (not something to do with hardware, but the software) go untreated and potentially enable mutation into another ghastly mosquito. We need a lot more doctors in this world trained to deal with conceptual diseases, to stop their spread, contain the infected, and research technologies that can purge things like bigotry, religious extremism, and the ideal of profit above all else, from all human minds. (profit can still be a priority, but NEVER the primary objective; pride in doing the good work should be the primary motivator, not the desire for money, especially if you do not need wealth in order to survive)
It's just the old timey rural mindset. It is not something they can have a say in; they must join the modern era if they are to continue being a part of society, simple as that. Detrimental traits like hating anything different from them, be it through sex, class, colour, creed, etc, must be purged; in evolution, deleterious traits are phased out because they are unsuited to the environment, and as sentient beings we have it within our power to remove traits from the "meme pool" (the gene pool of culture) without removing individuals possessive of such traits. Natural selection can still be a part of our world, and with the right tools it can take it's course without "survival of the fittest" being an issue, since when the minds of people are tainted by conceptual sickness, the appropriate treatments could purge the concepts of xenophobia from the human mind, like putting a file in the Recycling Bin then deleting it. The world could do without xenophobia; humanity no longer needs it to keep us safe from the saber-toothed wraiths that stalked the prehistoric savannahs, since they're all dead now, and we've more-or-less achieved the status of apex predator, so we don't need to fear "monsters" anymore.
There's a lot of rural small towns in Manitoba, there isn't much of this in Winnipeg.
Wait so the owners actually left because they were insulted? Title is confusing me.
wow so manitoba is not only the most boring province possible but now the worst one overall why would you ever live in manitoba
Saskatchewan is more boring. Winnipeg has homicides and decapitations, that's not boring.

Doctors have lives to save, with how little funding medicine gets in this country we can't waste their time having them "treating" people for social issues.
the ideal of profit above all else, from all human minds. (profit can still be a priority, but NEVER the primary objective; pride in doing the good work should be the primary motivator, not the desire for money, especially if you do not need wealth in order to survive)
This literally would destroy business in this nation. If you're not in business to make money, you're not in the right line of work. Again, not a disease, and not even necessarily negative, the whole purpose of a business is to make money. If it doesn't make money it can't continue operations, and therefore cannot continue employing people. The whole objective of a business is turning a profit, you can't really tell a business not to be a business. Forcing things upon people who see themselves doing nothing wrong accomplishes nothing except making them hate you, or hate themselves. You must first teach them why what they're doing can be considered wrong, then they will come to realize themselves why they need to stop. Forcing things upon them will do nothing to fix the issues surrounding bigotry.
Yeah this is just small town bullshit, I'm from a small town in Manitoba myself and I've seen first hand that Mennonites/religious people are everywhere here. This definitely wouldn't happen in Winnipeg. That said, I still hate living here :v:
It's important to keep in mind that the whole community of Morris did not take part in this bigotry but rather just an ignorant portion of the population and it certainly does not reflect on the province as a whole. That is like saying the WBC represents the whole of Kansas. Manitoba is certainly no paradise but it's hardly the worst place in Canada.
Winnipeg is the best city ever in canada said no one ever. Seriously, this place is a shithole.
it has its upsides, the forks and downtown are gorgeous but you wouldn't want to be caught out there late at night, which can be said for most big cities.
Manitoba is one of the most Pro-LGBT places in Canada, along with the other NDP-ruled provinces (And fully covers FFS, SRS, and HRT for transsexuals, even). Morris is just a shitty religious town of just under 2000 people. It's worth noting that what the townspeople did is a federal offense and carries an additional provincial offense under specific Manitoban law. The reason the National Post made this so sensational is that they're aligned with the Canadian Conservative Party, which currently fighting with the ruling party of Manitoba, the NDP, for power there. It's politically-motivated, sensationalist stuff. Then again, that's why this place is called "Sensationalist Headlines!"
It's just a few dumb rednecks... there's a lot of them in most provinces.
