There are a few series that have always been thought impossible when it came to a Western release, either due to their complexity, obscurity or sheer size. In the case of Legend of the Galactic Heroes all three of those applied but Sentai Filmworks have recently announced that they will bring the series Westward in the near future.
To give a bit of context, Legend of the Galactic Heroes is based on a series of ten novels written by the acclaimed Yoshiki Tanaka and set in the distant future after humanity has colonized vast swathes of the galaxy. In this time, the huge sprawling Galactic Empire emerged. A tyrannical regime, it wasn’t long until large sections of its populace rebelled.
typo on forbes...
Sweet, I love Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
Great show, even if you don't like anime you'd probably like it, it features basically zero things about anime that alienate people from it. if it was a western live action show almost nothing would change.

Ever heard of entry level? This is exit level. This is the last anime you watch because nothing else will ever top it

Or so I've heard
It's great, go watch it.
It's one of the few shows that I kinda wish had a good dub, it's perfectly suited for it.

It's weird how some of the most western inspired series have trouble getting over here. LotGH is straight space Reich vs space Americans and it took this long for it to be officially released.
problems with licensing music iirc since the show doesn't have its own soundtrack, it's all western classical

logh: where everything is huge, including ship names
Viz is also putting out the first three novels iirc.
I'll def check out the novels since I really like the anime.

I binge watched like 70 episodes of this years ago and I liked it a lot but I never finished it. I should definitely get back into it.
I'm curious if they'll just steal the fansubs or do it all themselves.
Here is a taste for those that don't know

i have been informed that i have quoted the wrong spacey anime
I'll watch it again, nice. Would be amazing if they used German and English in a dub.
Hopefully buying it isn't 300 bucks.
Well now I know what's going to tide me over until Diamond is Unbreakable starts.
Considering how long it's taking them to Dub Sailor Moon, I'd say we'll have actual spaceships by the time they are done.
This show is outstanding but I would not recommend it to everyone.
This show could be described to be like Star Trek, but instead of the focus being around exploration and discovery, this show has a direct focus on politics and tactics. You will watch 5 episodes about the two opposing planning an attack and then have that attack last less than half an episode. It is an extremely dialogue heavy and slow paced show. If you aren't into that kind media, you shouldn't even watch the first episode because it will bore you to tears.
But if you are a fan of things like history, politics, and the art of war this will be an amazing experience for you. There's two opposing protagonists, both highly appealing in their own way. They are not enemies of the heart but enemies of circumstance. There are very few unlikeable or "evil" characters in this show, and you will end up having favorites on both sides of the war. This can make the battles that take place extremely dramatic because you are watching your favorite characters battle each other while hoping neither one is killed, it's edge of the seat material.
The show covers a wide range of themes that may have you adjusting your political and ethical views; Authoritarian versus Democracy, Military versus Civilian, Freedom and Responsibility versus Security and Order, Personal Freedom versus Ethics/Morality, and many more. The show paints neither side any better and the other paints a picture of the best and worst of each side. The show poses question like "Would you rather live in a democracy with corrupt politicians or an Autocracy with a benevolent leader?"
To give you an idea of how respected this anime is, it held the second highest top rated anime spot on my anime list for a while and is currently still in the top 5. It also was originally released straight to dvd but it became so popular it later got aired on multiple networks. This show is gold, watch it if this post even interests you in the slightest.
The humor is fantastic too:

Actually, anyone who's curious should watch episode 40, this episode details the history behind the universe that the series takes place in. There's no spoilers in this episode. If you find this interesting then this show is for you.

Sentai isn't big on dubbing so it will probably just be subs
