Italy massively rejects constitutional reform; PM facing calls to resign
Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has lost a referendum on constitutional reform by a wide margin, exit polls and early projections showed on Sunday, throwing his future into doubt and opening the door to renewed political instability in Italy.
Renzi, who had promised to resign if his flagship project was defeated, is due to address the nation at around midnight (6.00 p.m. ET), government sources said.
The euro fell sharply against the dollar on the exit polls, slipping to $1.0550 from $1.0625.
A trio of polls for various television stations saw the 'No' camp ahead by at least eight percentage points. Within half an hour, projections based on the initial counts suggested Renzi could lose by as much as 20 points.
If confirmed, the result would represent a fresh blow to the European Union which is struggling to overcome an array of crises and was eager for Renzi to continue his reform drive in the euro zone's heavily indebted, third-largest economy.
Defeat could also prompt fresh market ructions, especially in the banking sector which has lost almost half its value this year on the Milan bourse, hit by fears over its huge exposure to bad loans accumulated during years of economic downturn.....
From now on, I refuse to be an italian citizen.
Many voted due to clickbait news, celebs, hoaxes and shit. And now we are at the hands of Northern League and 5 Stars Movement.
May god save us all.
i honestly dont know what to think about this

I'll tell you: hope that Lega Nord doesn't happen to be in power again.
Marine Le Pen was quick to respond.

Translation: The Italians have disowned the EU and Renzi. Listen to this thirst for freedom of nations and protection!
Why on Earth did Renzi think it was a good idea to hold a referendum on consolidating political power towards the elite in 2016 of all years?
I'll tell you: hope that Lega Nord doesn't happen to be in power again.
tbh italy is a sinking ship. no matter who gets to be in power, we're fucked unless a miracle happens

Fix'd.
I wish people would've voted No on account of the merits of the reform itself, rather than just doing it because they dislike Renzi

(I dont know if drop dead threads disappear or not but) If I were to link this here. May I ask if what I gathered here is accurate?

I mean, it is pretty much true. I've seen people getting outraged at the 50k marked ballot boxes business, well known actors saying the populace would lose even more power just because... it was pretty shit overall
On one hand I'm kinda glad Renzi is no longer in power, on the other I hope this won't embolden the 5 Stars Movement to do a referendum on leaving the eurozone.

hell yes if is right. Satirical news places like rebubblica.it, il fatto quotidaino and many clickbait posts on FB as well as shitty newspaper control contributed to this factor.
Beppe Grillo even told to vote not with mind but with belly.
Can someone give me a run down on what this vote was about and how it's bad for the EU? I had no idea Italy was having such a major referendum on something.

i think even those that sympathize with renzi would agree that he's an embarrassment to the country when it comes to a lot of things.

thanks for proving my point
this is not what the reform was about
Why on Earth did Renzi think it was a good idea to hold a referendum on consolidating political power towards the elite in 2016 of all years?
The referendum is mandatory if the constitutional law doesn't reach at least 2/3 majority approval in the Parliament. It's not something Renzi or anyone has any control over. What Renzi had control over, however, was his mouth, which should have been kept shut, instead of promising he would've resigned if he had lost the referendum. Then it was basically over as many people just voted to oust him since they didn't like him.
This is a disaster, tbh.

Damn you DD!
i remember both the leaders of five stars movement and lega nord kissing trump's ass after his victory and admiring him as "the maverick voice of the american people"
these are the people we're stuck with now, give me a fucking break

I'm aware it was about changing the bicameral system you have, but as soon as your PM announced that he would resign in case of a defeat, the subject changed in most peoples heads. It was foolish to think people would still care about the original subject.

maybe you can be a citizen of the EU, that is while it lasts anyway
We just saw the next step into the dissolution of the EU.
Going by the description of the referendum contents here, I don't quite understand how it's necessarily a bad thing that this failed or how it hurts the EU (except maybe indirectly if the PM is very pro-EU and the other contenders aren't).
I'll tell you: hope that Lega Nord doesn't happen to be in power again.
Could you do a quick overview of the issues related to the referendum? Most news sources I see only say that it failed and that it's bad for the EU, but hardly any seem to explain what is actually going on.
wow this reform.. like there doing things to improve the legislature, for example setting rules about what constitutes passage like 2/3 or 50% in both chambers and then theres absolutely gutting 1 chamber to streamline things
i dont quite understand how this was a move against the EU unless the EU is now just the bank of germany which would have benefitted from being able to ram through austerity policies like greece

But where will you go? Is Switzerland an option or maybe you can live in an airport?
It's like half the planet suddenly decided to lay back and let retards fuck up everything

Or maybe I can emigrate in Canada - which I am planning to do since ever - and then after ten years of living there get the canadian citizenship and reject the italian one.
As someone who has little to no background info on Italian politics, what kind of constitutional reform would this have entailed?

Going to live in Canada is stupidly fucking easy. Do it.

You're stuck with rising populism and a rapidly weakened left because of monumental dissatisfaction towards your politics.

Should I even answer to someone who wants flame at all costs?
One hopes people realise this WAS about Italy's system solely and it doesn't lead to further anti-EU sentiment in Italy of all places.
