I kind of don't know anything, why is it controversial?
I kind of don't know anything, why is it controversial?
i think because theyre solving a police v protest situation with pepsi
What a crazy advertisement. Its actually dystopian.
dystopian.
whens it going to be time for people to stop using this word willy nilly about everything
You ever take your blonde wig off and end oppression by handing out Pepsi
This was a protest? I thought it was just a bunch of people gathered to see a celebrity or something and there were just cops there like there would be at any event.
[editline]4th April 2017[/editline]
Oh I guess it was. I still don't get it.
Not dystopian, just incredibly stupid and.. I don't know the right word but it just feels like a randomly generated concept spit out of the world's shittiest ad-bot. Let's get an Instagram model to hand our shitty sugar water to a cop in the middle of a protest, how topical!
meh Coke's been pulling feel good shit like this for years, I don't see why Pepsi should be criticized for it if Coke isn't
so this is controversial because some girl took a pepsi and gave it to a cop during a protest?????????????????
?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
edit: error 404 my mind does not compute
I don't get it, is the message Blue Cans Matter?
meh Coke's been pulling feel good shit like this for years, I don't see why Pepsi should be criticized for it if Coke isn't
This was clearly trying to be feel-good but failed miserably at it
It ended up just making light of our huge societal issues with an implied message of "Pepsi is so good it can solve social unrest!"
Like, what?
so this is controversial because some girl took a pepsi and gave it to a cop during a protest?????????????????

It's controversial because it's a really bad attempt at cashing in on controversial hot topics for the purpose of advertising a shitty brand of soda
because is advertisement yes???
to advertise pepsi yes????
dude do you think theyre going to make an ad where it's like
"pepsi is so good because Vietnam vets drink it"
or some shit
the point is to make a shitty crash grab on a controversial topic lol
edit: and if people know this why do they care
I kind of don't know anything, why is it controversial?
Grrr that's not a realistic protest there's no violence cops wouldn't drink Pepsi I thought everything you see on TV is exactly like real life grumblegrumble
or maybe is just advertisement yes???????
Are you trying to tell me there was literally no reason whatsoever behind choosing a protest for the setting while we just happen to be going through a period of social unrest where protests are constantly the hot topic in the news?
That's just plain naive.
[editline].[/editline]
are you just going to keep editing your post every fifteen minutes to try to make it seem progressively less dumb
This was clearly trying to be feel-good but failed miserably at it

I'm not saying this is necessarily a good advertisement, I'm just saying Coke pulls the same shit, and it always comes across as insincere/eye-roll inducing. I never see any controversy around them though

How exactly does that go against my point? Their shitty cash grab on a controversial topic makes light of serious controversial issues going on right now.
Of fucking course it's going to be a controversial advertisement when they play with fire like that.
I'm not saying this is necessarily a good advertisement, I'm just saying Coke pulls the same shit, and it always comes across as insincere/eye-roll inducing. I never see any controversy around them though
Because this one is worse

Coke's ads might be insincerely feel good but they generally don't include controversial topics or are at least much more subtle about it, to my recollection.
Trying to cash in on controversial topics tends to make your cash grab controversial. Is that not obvious?
Are people actually this salty over the idea of people setting aside their differences?
Like actually what the fuck?

Far from finding that controversial I find that hilarious.

People are salty Pepsi is using serious issues as a vector to advertise their shitty soda
It's like that Simspons quote, "How often have you driven by a fire and thought, 'How can this benefit me?'"
[editline]4th April 2017[/editline]
Far from finding that controversial I find that hilarious.
Fair enough, I'm not exactly up-in-arms about it either, I'm just saying it's easy to see why some people do find it controversial :v:

I mean I've seen other advertisements do that and no one got mad.
Seriously, I've actually seen people get mad at the idea of people setting aside their differences, I'm not talking about you in particular with that comment.

First thing that comes to mind is some of those commercials in the last year or two where a company comes out in support of gay marriage or LGBT rights or etc. Is that what you're referring to?
It's similar but at least those commercials take a stance on the controversial topic they're using to advertise. It feels a little less scummy, to me at least, because they're putting their opinion out their even if it costs them customers (as anything as controversial as LGBT rights is bound to do in the US), which is generally the opposite of what a company wants when advertising.
On the other hand you have this commercial, where they use the setting of recent controversial issues (protests with tension between protestors and law enforcement), but actively avoid taking a stance by just putting generic shit on the protest signs. Then they end it with, "Let's all come together and drink some Pepsi!! Yeah!!"
It's just the lowest effort, lowest possible risk way to cash in on serious issues. That's scummy. If they want to avoid losing any customers, they shouldn't try cashing in on controversial topics at all.
I know this ad.....

viva cola!

Thinking it's a shitty ad is one thing. Being offended, disgusted, or outraged makes someone seem really thin-skinned. How pampered does someone have to be before they start wasting energy getting stressed out over a god damn soft drink commercial?
[editline]4th April 2017[/editline]
the most extreme reaction i'd grant is a sigh and eyeroll
whatever

well howdy doody aren't you just having a grand old time riding on your high horse
Tell me, where are all the offended, disgusted, and outraged people? The OP says backlash; backlash can be as simple as "this is a shitty commercial".
And even if there are offended, disgusted, and/or outraged people out there, who are you to police the metrics of their response? I frankly don't think anyone cares that your accepted response is only a sigh and an eyeroll.

Take a look at the youtube comments for that video. All ridiculous. But that's just run of the mill for youtube.
Look at a google news search for "pepsi ad"

Again, more of the usual suspects.
I didn't mean to accuse you of being dramatic or anything and I tried to make a point to use "someone" rather than "you" in my reply, but I probably shouldn't have quoted you to begin with.
I guess I got the impression that you were apologizing for people overreacting. I'd say that this "backlash" is just that. The fact that it's generating news articles means that people are taking this way too seriously. This isn't a few thousand people going "oh wow what a shitty ad", "what a shame", or "how insensitive?!" to themselves on the couch. It wouldn't be making headlines were that the case.
If I'm on a high horse for thinking it's all stupid, I guess I better buy a helmet learn how to ride it, because I'm not coming down.
