[release]Today, Congress holds hearings on the first American Internet censorship system. This bill can pass. If it does the Internet and free speech will never be the same. Join all of us to stop this bill.[/release] Yeah, but what does this mean for me? [release] Website Blocking The government can order service providers to block websites for infringing links posted by any users. [/release] [release] Risk of Jail for Ordinary Users It becomes a felony with a potential 5 year sentence to stream a copyrighted work that would cost more than $2,500 to license, even if you are a totally noncommercial user, e.g. singing a pop song on Facebook. [/release] [release] Chaos for the Internet Thousands of sites that are legal under the DMCA would face new legal threats. People trying to keep the internet more secure wouldn't be able to rely on the integrity of the DNS system. [/release] What you can do to help (Non-US people too!) Send a letter via http://americancensorship.org/ All you have to do is fill out a small form, and there is a pre-existing editable letter. Hopefully we might be able to stop this shit.
It probably won't get passed like the other internet bills.
It probably won't get passed like the other internet bills.
It doesn't really hurt to try. After a while there may very well be a censorship bill that passes, so if we sit idly by for so long something will happen.
Filled and sent. Good luck, this is a fucking retarded bill.

Bad bill!
I was hoping for a day where we all carry around big black rectangles and censor random things with them.
hey remember that time when justin beiber concert votes were in north korea.
Signed, it's not like it will pass anyway.
The American Censorship Day thread on reddit is auto-blocked at my school for trigger words, the rest of the site isn't
Kinda fitting, seeing as I was listening to this as I clicked on the thread.
Kinda fitting, seeing as I was listening to this as I clicked on the thread.
Fuck, now I read the op in Esbern's/Greybeards voice.
Saw a pop-up about this on TGWTG, scary sounding shit. I truly doubt it will get passed, but at the rate things have been going lately, I sent a letter anyway.
Man fuck involuntary censorship, man That's like, my opinion, man
Bad bill!
Didn't know the US was becoming a Communist country.
I think the Internet needs its own government. It would keep all of these old bastards out of our hair and so they stop messing with things they don't truly understand.
The principals this country was founded upon will be in total vain if this bullshit gets passed.
You know you have a good government when they pass bills nobody wanted or asked for.
Goodbye uncensored internet 2011
-snip-
Didn't know the US was becoming a Communist country.
More like a fascist oligarchy.
You know you have a good government when they pass bills nobody wanted or asked for.
But the RIAA and MPAA asked for it :downs:
So when is this going down?
So when is this going down?
It's not. For YEARS this has been brought up on forums at least 40,000 times, and each time you get a rally of people crying about freedom of speech and all of that bullshit. So, in summary: American government thinks they will be able to censor the internet, the bill will never pass, communities are throwing fits about how America is loosing its already non-existent freedom, etc. etc.
I believe this is unconstitutional in other matters anyway. If it is passed it'll be gone within a while because it'll be ruled unconstitutional. (and the likelihood of it being passed is slim to none) If it's not and it's passed, welp. I guess I better get out of the basement..
It doesn't really hurt to try. After a while there may very well be a censorship bill that passes, so if we sit idly by for so long something will happen.
If that bill passes the president will probably get impeached.
If that bill passes the president will probably get impeached.
Damn right.
I'm glad I'm in Canada, but I really hope this doesn't pass for you guys.
I'm glad I'm in Canada, but I really hope this doesn't pass for you guys.
You do realize that it doesn't mean shit if you're in Canada right? There's just less chance of you getting arrested. Your internet will be the same and there will be a noticeable lack of content.
