Walter Jones of North Carolina – joining them in a procedural vote that would have allowed them to bring up the bill. But Democrats also launched a petition Wednesday that would allow them to force a vote on the bill at a later date if they get a majority of lawmakers to sign on. “Today is a courage call for our Republican colleagues,” said Rep. Eric Swalwell of Calif., who co-authored the bill with Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland. “Can they — as we have done with past attacks against our country — can they put party aside, put our country first and unite with Democrats to say that never again will we tolerate an attack like this?” The legislation would create a 12-member, bipartisan commission that could interview witnesses, obtain documents, issue subpoenas and receive public testimony to investigate Russia’s attempts to influence the election.

Senate Democrats continue to push for a special prosecutor, who would be appointed by the Justice Department and could investigate criminal behavior. Those calls have intensified following Trump’s firing of former FBI Director James Comey, who was leading the bureau’s investigation of the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia, and revelations that Trump may have revealed classified information to Russian diplomats. Republicans are also seeking more information from the administration through existing congressional investigations. Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, who chairs the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, is seeking information involving Trump and Comey following reports that Trump may have pressured Comey to shut down an investigation of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn as part of the Russia probe.
Surprising no one
Can anyone name one good reason why you wouldn't want an independent, unbiased investigation?
Can anyone name one good reason why you wouldn't want an independent, unbiased investigation?
Fear over what the investigation will turn up.
Fucking scoundrels didnt have the balls to reap the consequences and so they shoot it down.
It's just a matter of time now, Trump keeps fucking up and now the GOP is being sketchy about something which normally would be an open and closed case. Hope US doesn't suffer too much from his actions, the quicker the impeachment the faster the US can get back on the right path
If you were alive in the time of Reagan, you would never suspect that an American President and the Russian government would be almost under investigation for collusion but the "Upstanding Republicans" turned down the invitation for an investigation It would literally go against everything the party stood for in that time period. Oh how things change, oh how the republicans are nothing but partisan shills.
I hope this ends up biting them, hard.
Gee I wonder what reason they could have for preventing an unbiased independent investigation. It's almost like they are hiding something.
Why do House Republicans seem to be so much more morally bankrupt than Senate Republucans? Are the standards just that much lower?
Party above country is the new republican motto
If these allegations keep on coming (and keep on implicating people outside of Trump's crew), there won't be much of a GOP left.
I wonder what the Trump Defense Force here have to say about this  Obstructing an investigation, but of course we won't see any of them here now will we
Party above country is the new republican motto
You should get that phrase trending on Twitter and such. If it catches on it might hurt their reputation badly enough that they're forced to act.
If there is one thing that the past half-year has really shown about the GOP is that virtually all of their criticisms of Obama never meant shit to them. How much longer is the cognitive dissonance going to be kept at bay for these people?
I wonder what the Trump Defense Force here have to say about this  Obstructing an investigation, but of course we won't see any of them here now will we
They'll just take this as a proof that there is nothing to investigate and therefore no possibility of crime having happened, chalking up all accusations against Trump and GOP to partisan politics. And then we just wait for the next scandal and excuses why it isn't an issue. I'm looking forwards to a steady stream of nonsensical US news for the next three and half years.
They're just digging themselves deeper with this shit. After the incredible shitshow that is this term, they're not going to hold a majority of governorships, house, or senate or the presidency again until 2048 at the least. Time to scrap their shitheap of a party and start over.

It'll affect midterm elections and maybe the next presidential election but past that it's going to fairly steadily go back to normal. The biggest difference is that the conservative party may have a different name is all.
Can anyone name one good reason why you wouldn't want an independent, unbiased investigation?
Losing the presidency for the next three elections
The traitor party?
Well it wouldn't be too much more blatant than the GOP already are, lol.
Is there even a way to get a proper investigation going without republicans? If Trump will continue to show complete disregard for national security and have republicans continuously back him, I'm fairly sure a lot of people in the military or in the government in general are gonna get pissed off. I'm not gonna say "military coup", but there's no way this crazy shitstorm can go on for 4 years without something or someone snapping. There will be a last straw even for the most devoted Trump supporters, sooner or later.

The people being investigated must have great reason to obstruct the investigation Honestly
