Backer Content
It's come to our attention that a piece of backer-created content has made it into Pillars of Eternity that was not vetted. Once it was brought to our attention, it followed the same vetting process as all of our other content. Prior to release, we worked with many of our backers to iterate on content they asked to be put into the game that didn't strike the right tone.
In the case of this specific content, we checked with the backer who wrote it and asked them about changing it. We respect our backers greatly, and felt it was our duty to include them in the process. They gave us new content which we have used to replace what is in the game. To be clear, we followed the process we would have followed had this content been vetted prior to the release of the product.
We appreciate the faith you have all given us into making Pillars of Eternity the great game that it has become, and we appreciate the strength of conviction all of you bring to every conversation we have together.
Sincerely,
Feargus Urquhart, CEO
Obsidian Entertainment, Inc.
For those unfamiliar with the controversy, listen to this.
He paid $500 to support the game and get four lines of text in there. And now he doesn't even have that.
I thought the new inscription was quite funny given the context.
Still shouldn't have changed it though.
But it's a joke.
before you form strong opinions on this, note that the guy was okay with it being changed. it's still kind of stupid that it had to be changed but it wasn't as if Obsidian just got rid of his message

Also I've heard the old tombstone is in another location now but hasn't been removed wholesale

He was told to change it but was given a choice what to change it to.

That's a misunderstanding; the new location is where the new message is. The old message has been lost to the annals of history.
The submitter was okay with having it changed, and:

What's the problem? Sounds like this would have been removed in the first place had it been noticed.

At least the new tombstone is a thinly-veiled fuck you to the people who pressured him and Obsidian to change it.
If mods are even in the cards, we're probably going to see someone mod the original back in.

Yeah because asking someone to write something different totally is the same as just taking away their reward like you said
[editline]3rd April 2015[/editline]
Also gg op for lying in your title
It's just amazing how people are so up in arms about this, and are blatantly disregarding anybody opposed to it.
Seriously, just look at this: http://www.themarysue.com/pillars-of-eternity-transphobia/
Really?

This comes from the same person who also demanded this tombstone to be changed.

That video came long before this event and cannot be influenced by it in any way.

How is that lying? It's what happened.

Now he gets to write two things and become the new hero for thousands of angry people on the internet who think that a game developer changing their own game is a violation of free speech
The sad part about this is, the people who complained about it probably wont play the game anyway. They just used it as an excuse to unleash some twitter rage. Either way, that area now wont go unnoticed with all this controversy surrounding it. So that's cool.
i reserve the right to make bad, offensive jokes in a game other people pay good money for. freedom of speech n all that :rolleye:

"Had it been noticed?" It went through the approval process like everything else, this is just Obsidian backpedaling to pressure.

There's literally nothing offensive in the original joke unless you personally take it unto yourself to interpret it in a very offensive manner. Why does that deserve censoring?

But that's bullshit though, they must have noticed it, and then ultimately approved of it in the first place, because they had to vet every message that the backers submitted.
But it's a joke.
and
[editline]4th April 2015[/editline]
it could be a metaphysical analysation of deep space for all i care, it's still in bad taste and Obsidian deemed it so too when it was brought to light. 'stop being so offended' :)
And of course there will be people that care more about this than the backer that wrote it in the first place.
If this had been caught before release it would have been vetted as well as anything else that was vetted.
I wonder how big the Internet drama would be if Obsidian revealed all the backer stuff that was vetted.

actually true
There's literally nothing offensive in the original joke unless you personally take it unto yourself to interpret it in a very offensive manner. Why does that deserve censoring?
the only way you could interpret that as having nothing offensive in it in 2015 is if you had no eyeballs

You have to be looking to be offended to be offended by a joke, you have to insert a subtext that isn't there in order to be offended in the manner suggested by yourself here.
That's pretty hard for me to respect. It's pretty much straight up manipulative.
actually true
no actually, not true at all
you've been banned here a few times for various reasons. clearly Facepunch staff are breaching your freedom of speech. why don't you go talk to a government representative about it?
the only way you could interpret that as having nothing offensive in it in 2015 is if you had no eyeballs
Oh that's a strong argument I'm really going to take that into consideration.

I reserve the right to complain about a line of text that someone payed $500 for. Freedom of speech n all that :rolleye:
You have to be looking to be offended to be offended by a joke
according to who? do 9/11 victims have to be in the mood to be offended by 9/11 jokes or something too?
