• Papa John's Obamacare Costs Are Far Less Than Price Of Free Pizza Giveaway
News flash to Papa John’s CEO John Schnatter: Obamacare isn’t the only thing costing your business money. The pizza chain head has made his views on the Affordable Care Act clear in recent months, claiming the new health care law will cost his business about $5 to $8 million per year. To compensate Schnatter's said he will likely raise pizza prices and cut back some workers’ hours so he doesn’t have to insure them. Caleb Melby of Forbes has graciously done the math on Obamacare’s cost to Papa John’s and according to his analysis, to cover the cost of Obamacare, the pizza chain would have to raise prices by 3.4 to 4.6 cents per pie -- way less than the 11 to 14 cents Schnatter claims he needs. And there are other changes the chain could make to save some money, Melby notes, like not giving away 2 million pizzas for free at a cost of between $24 and $32 million to the company, for example. We're guessing Obamacare won't impact life at Schnatter's lavish home, a 40,000 square-foot mansion in a tony suburb of Louisville, Kentucky, that features several swimming pools, a private golf course and a 22-car garage among other amenities, according to CelebrityNetworth.com. “Who would’ve imagined pizza could build this," said former presidential candidate Mitt Romney earlier this year. "This is really something. Don’t you love this country? What a home this is, what grounds these are, the pool, the golf course…. This is a real tribute to America, to entrepreneurship." Schnatter is just one of many company heads using Obamacare as an excuse to make changes at his company. Murray Energy's CEO laid off 160 workers the Wednesday following President Obama’s reelection, claiming his company was in “survival mode” due to regulations and taxes Obama put in place. The reality: the coal industry, of which Murray Energy is a part, is in decline thanks in large part to a recent influx of natural gas into the U.S., according to the Washington Post. The owner of 40 New York-area Applebee’s franchises told Fox Business last week that he wouldn’t hire any new workers and would be cutting back the hours of some of his current employees as a result of Obamacare. Applebee’s parent company distanced itself from his statements as the company faced backlash over his comments. One super-rich CEO backed down from his threat to downsize if Obama was reelected. David Siegel, the CEO of Westgate Resorts and the man who tried to build the biggest house in America, said that he actually gave his workers raises in the wake of Obama’s win. In the lead up to the election, Siegel sent his employees an email warning them to vote for Romney or else. So what you're saying is that a businessman used the jobs of his workers, and the termination of their contracts to push his agenda? In other news grass is green, the sky is blue and clouds look like delicious candy floss.

what a dick [editline]24th November 2012[/editline] pfahahahaaaah tony
The free pizzas are a promotional tool to get people to order there more often in the future. Can such a basic marketing concept really be lost on the author of this article?
The point the author is trying to make is that the CEO is profit gouging, not actually doing this for a valid reason. It's like Apple saying they're randomly going to raise the price of an Iphone by $50 because a full moon fell on a Friday, it's bullshit. Edit: If the owner of Papa John's really needed to do this, he wouldn't have advertised the reasoning why, he would've tacked it on silently or said it was a cost due to gas prices or inflation instead of making it a polarizing issue, losing business in the process. So he's really just being a twat.
The free pizzas are a promotional tool to get people to order there more often in the future. The author is just pointing out that Pappa John's has more than enough income to be practically unaffected by Obamacare, and are only doing the hour cuts and layoffs because of a personal agenda. Basically looking for a reason to raking in more dosh and blaming the consequences on.
I won one of those free pizzas :smug:

He's just being a dick head and cutting employee hours so he won't have to insure them, since if they work 34 hours, and not 35 and over, you don't have to. (And also not paying them as much in the mean time since they work fewer hours saving even More money) and yet STILL raising prices on the pizzas too. There's nothing putting pressure on him or his company's profits what so ever, he's only in it to get more money for himself. I guess he's retiring soon and wants some bonuses Mark my Words, He'll retire in the next 2 years, and this is just a ploy to get some extra dosh. Go ahead and quote me on this
I agree with Noble; it's an advertising stunt, and the more extravagant it seems, the more successful it will be. On the other hand, the last person in America who needs more money, Papa John's CEO John Shitter, has a goddamned mote around his goddamned mansion.

I wish Papa Johns pizza was actually good so I would eat there. That way I could stop eating there to stop putting money into this schmuck's pocket.
I wish Papa Johns pizza was actually good so I would eat there. It was different when I needed something other than Dominoes/Pizza Hut. I refuse to order from there for now on however.
I've gotten 5 free pizza's over the past year use the papa rewards thing. I get 4 points per order and 25 points give you free pizza. The best part is there is always I coupon that saves me a good deal off my orders, so more pizza for when I have guests over. Do you know how much marketing costs?(it's a lot) [editline]24th November 2012[/editline] I mean arguments against Obamacare aside, the free pizza giveaways probably make a lot more money for the company than it costs. [editline]24th November 2012[/editline] I want to know whether the Obamacare fuss is actually a marketing ploy, though.
Capitalism and greedy white men = loads of money.
Meh, Domino's is still better. [editline]24th November 2012[/editline] I am a true fatass AMA
Even without the numbers to prove it, anyone should be able to see this is more about saving a buck and blaming it on Obama instead of owning up to screwing your employees.
This is Papa John saying that his words were skewed and that he fully supports the AHA. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/john-h-schnatter/papa-johns-obamacare_b_2166209.html?ncid=edlinkusaolp00000003
"The good news is 100% of the population (full-time workers) is going to get health insurance. I'm cool with that." "We're all going to pay for it. There's nothing for free." "And this way I get to provide health insurance and I'm not at a competitive disadvantage ... our competitors are going to have to do the same thing."
Maybe call them greedy, but accusing them of it being because of some sort of political agenda sounds like people just being dramatic to me. It just seems that way when they're singled out in the media even though tons of other business, including competing pizza chains, are doing the same things.
What I want to know is where the right got their brainwashing devices because I don't believe there's any other way sane human beings would be convinced to support people who live in multi-million dollar mansions and screw over their customers and employees because trickle down because free market because freedom whoops I mean "job creators" [editline]25th November 2012[/editline] Papa John's is rubbish anyway When I got my slice it felt like I was handed one of those toys that grow when you dunk them in water
I saw a dude at Costco today shovel a bunch of those emergency ration pails into his cart and then wander over to look at the Bill O'Reilly book. I'm decently sure he was stocking up for the day Obamacare takes over the nation. [editline]25th November 2012[/editline] Honestly though, I figured as much. I got three or four of those free pizza coupons and used them all.
He could have just done the 1 million free pizzas and not bitched about Obamacare, but Peyton Manning fucked him over.
last time i had papa john's the pizza looked pretty much the same coming out as it did coming in although i don't think that was tomato sauce...
