• Oculus Rift Runs Out Of Materials, Production Halted (For Now)
The developer kit model of the Oculus Rift VR headset has gotten so unexpectedly popular so quickly that the company has run out of the components needed to make the thing. A statement on the headset's Reddit page says "Certain components used in the Oculus Rift developer kit are no longer being manufactured, meaning they are no longer available to us for production. As a result, we don't have the necessary materials to produce additional kits." Oculus still has a few of its old, original units left in stock, but once they're gone, there will be no more of these headsets made until they can find "alternate sources for the needed components". The shortage is testament to just how insanely popular the headset has become; the model currently on sale is intended for developers only, but has nevertheless sold over 50,000 units, a figure the company "never expected" to reach. Don't make it stop! Make some out of wood you lazy bastards!
Don't make it stop! Make some out of wood you lazy bastards!
Would pay extra for brass and wood version/10
pretty sure most people interested in deving for it already have one
Probably because of idiots buying them to show off with, when the consumer edition is the only one worth buying unless you are a developer, hence the term "Developer Kit".
Certain components used in the Oculus Rift developer kit are no longer being manufactured, meaning they are no longer available to us for production.
So some other companies that made bits for the Rift aren't making them anymore.
Would pay extra for brass and wood version/10
Brass trim, cherry wood front face, ebony inlay for the logo, I'd fucking buy it
I don't think they ran out of plastic casings, but rather out of displays.
They never saw it coming
I don't think they ran out of plastic casings, but rather out of displays.
Then make the displays out of wood.
They're taking the Early Access approach. These people don't buy it for dev use or for testing purposes, they get it because they want it now, regardless of whether it's ready or not.
A lot of people on the oculus forums are speculating that they aren't making the parts because oculus hasn't ordered them... As they're halting production of the first version of the developer kit (the ones available now) and starting production of the second version (which will have specs very close to those of the final version). We have to wait and see if they announce the new developer kit at GDC in March. We already know there will be a second developer kit because John Carmac confirmed there would be.
i hope this doesn't hold up development too much
Don't make it stop! Make some out of wood you lazy bastards!
3D print that shit
Damn, they've run out of unobtanium.
Probably because of idiots buying them to show off with, when the consumer edition is the only one worth buying unless you are a developer, hence the term "Developer Kit".
impatient impulse buyers who have nothing to do with development are the reason there was a six month backorder of units, causing a lot of actual devs to have to wait a long time to get their own kits, and also sucking up time and resources from the creators themselves to get the systems in place to manufacture all of it
Hey guys, this guy didn't read
uuuhh pretty sure there's nothing in the article saying "don't worry guys this won't impede development at all". the only thing to that effect is this: "Note that only the original developer unit appears to be affected; no mention was made of the upcoming, improved "Crystal Cove" headset. We've checked in with the company about that, and will update if we hear back." which is saying "it seems like this only affects the original dev kits but we're not sure". it's kind of reasonable to assume "maybe this will hold up development" when they're saying that they literally can't make new headsets anymore until they get a new source of parts

The exact screens they used for their first dev kit are just not made anymore, but that's not a problem considering the amount of dev kits out there, and their work on the consumer kit and next dev kit.
Probably because of idiots buying them to show off with, when the consumer edition is the only one worth buying unless you are a developer, hence the term "Developer Kit".
They still look pretty unappealing for the average video game consumer, though. For a VR headset, it looks kinda lame. They really need to get a Dr. Dre endorsement IMO
Would pay extra for brass and wood version/10
That would be ungodly heavy.. you would have to wear a neck brace to avoid fatigue in your neck, and some pretty damaging permanent injury. But, it would look cool.. so there's that.
It's okay, while they find new parts/developers for the parts, they can start coming up with designs and such so I can have a custom Solid Snake mask for VR
-snip-
Well ain't that a development train wreck.
No, actually it's not. [editline]24th February 2014[/editline]
the crystal cove is just a prototype, there's no real production of it.
Then make the displays out of wood.
Wooden, photosensitive pixels that fuel themselves using leaves on the side of the display. Holy shit, give this man a medal because he just saved the world.
That would be ungodly heavy.. you would have to wear a neck brace to avoid fatigue in your neck, and some pretty damaging permanent injury. But, it would look cool.. so there's that.
brass coated plastic (1MM thick), wood veneer over plastic, all the style, none of the weight
I am disappointed that I didn't get my unity pro trial when I bought it
So what is it exactly that they ran out of? "You require more minerals".
