I'm really surprised Japan got off as well as they did. Most buildings aren't able to withstand that sort of quake, and, while the destruction is still immense, it isn't as horrible as I would have expected it to be. The fact that Tokyo is still standing surprises me. Anyway, it's still terrible what happened, and my best wishes go out to them.

If the death toll is anywhere close to 1,000 I'll be amazed... I reckon there'll be 10s of thousands (if not hundreds) of people who've lost their lives in this.
Keep in mind the Thailand boxing day tsunami killed 250,000 people. I'm aware Thailand was far less prepared, and there won't be as many casualties... but it still puts it in perspective.
