Penn & Teller did something similar during the first episode of Penn & Teller Fool Us, where they pretended to explain how the trick worked for the audience, then when they cut the assistant with a blade saw guts fell out etc.

surely he would have felt in the chainsaw something was in the way, ok dont get me wrong chopping through a body with a chain saw would be alot easier than with a bow saw but there would still be some resistance isnt he meant to just easily chop down to a certain point?
