Below is shamelessly stolen from last years OP by OogalaBoogal
National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing on November 1. The goal is to write a 50,000 word, (approximately 175 page) novel by 11:59:59, November 30.
Valuing enthusiasm and perseverance over painstaking craft, NaNoWriMo is a novel-writing program for everyone who has thought fleetingly about writing a novel but has been scared away by the time and effort involved.
Because of the limited writing window, the ONLY thing that matters in NaNoWriMo is output. It’s all about quantity, not quality. This approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks, and write on the fly.
Make no mistake: You will be writing a lot of crap. And that’s a good thing. By forcing yourself to write so intensely, you are giving yourself permission to make mistakes. To forgo the endless tweaking and editing and just create. To build without tearing down.
As you spend November writing, you can draw comfort from the fact that, all around the world, other National Novel Writing Month participants are going through the same joys and sorrows of producing the Great Frantic Novel. Wrimos meet throughout the month to offer encouragement, commiseration, and—when the thing is done—the kind of raucous celebrations that tend to frighten animals and small children.
In 2010, we had over 200,000 participants. More than 30,000 of them crossed the 50K finish line by the midnight deadline, entering into the annals of NaNoWriMo superstardom forever. They started the month as auto mechanics, out-of-work actors, and middle school English teachers. They walked away novelists.
So, to recap:
What: Writing one 50,000-word novel from scratch in a month’s time.
Who: You! We can’t do this unless we have some other people trying it as well. Let’s write laughably awful yet lengthy prose together.
Why: The reasons are endless! To actively participate in one of our era’s most enchanting art forms! To give yourself permission to write without obsessing over quality. To be able to make obscure references to passages from our novels at parties. To stop being one of those people who say, “I’ve always wanted to write a novel,” and become one of those people who can say, “Oh, a novel? It’s such a funny story–I’ve written three.”
You can sign up anytime to add your name to the roster and browse the forums. Writing begins 12:00:01 November 1. To be added to the official list of winners, you must reach the 50,000-word mark by November 30 at 11:59:59. Once your novel has been verified by our web-based team of robotic word counters, the partying begins.
I have just done my first two words sprints and have managed to do 5767 words of gibberish (it happens when I type that fast). I did it in 2010 and 2011, won both times, although 2011 required 22,817 words on the 30th of November (never again). Post your past experiences, problems and advice below! Register at either www.nanowrimo.org if you are over 14 adult, if you are still in school you can use ywp.nanowrimo.org. You can sign up to both if you fit with both.
Again, stolen from last OP, if you are doing it I will link your profile (PM me it or post it in the thread) in the OP.
Remember, quantity not quality. Good luck guys.

Known about it for a long time, but this is the only year I've decided to try it so far. And the first day is off to a bit of a bad start, considering I've done 0 words in total. I did a bit of outlining and stuff yesterday, though, so that's a start at least.
I've done this 2 times already, both times got ~1/2 way through and just quit.
May as well give it another go.
My English teacher is enforcing this on us. She wants us to write down how many words we did in a day.
To get an 'A' on the assignment, I have to write 1500 words a day. :v:
Definitely doing this this year. I tried last year, but some stuff came up and I wasn't able to go on. This year, though, I'm gonna do it! I've got my idea and everything!
As someone who does a bit of scribble-writing, I kind of want to attempt this.
At the same time, I'm a perfectionist and I'm afraid I'll get 1-10 pages in before I start going back to try to tweak stuff. I don't think I've ever written anything, school paper or story, that was over 20-ish pages.

write by hand, or using a typewriter. Prevents you from spending an hour fucking around with one paragraph.
Doing this for the first time. Busy day to start. It's 0007 now and I've got to do another 900 words in order to complete the 1,667 word target for today.
Success!

My handwriting is terrible and infinitely slower. I type at 80-110WPM. I write at 10-30WPM for legibility.
I'm trying this for the first year, too. So far I'm about 1400 words in, and it's already a rambling, incoherent mess.
So, pretty much, off to a good start.

One suggestion there was is to turn off your monitor when you start typing. You should be a pretty good typer, so you won't make many mistakes, but if you do you can just run spellcheck afterwards. It prevents you from editing as you go, and it really helps, as I'm quite bad at that.
here's my opener
ron paul looked over the hellscape that was once washington dc. now gokubama knows that dragonballs are no match for gold.
There we go, got quite a bit typed today. My story is based on the 'Indrid Cold' phenomenon. What's every one else writing about?
Do they accept erotic fanfictions? Not just the romantic stuff, I mean, but the really heavy shit?
I recently started working on a 50 Shades of Gray-inspired story about a dentist and his attractive young assistant entitled, "Butthole Warriors Pt 1."
[editline]1st November 2012[/editline]
Working title.
I'm a terrible writer, have a vague idea for a plot and have very little time with school still pushing me around, but I'll try to do something anyways!
I can't write, spell or do grammer but sod it, ima give this a go, probably won't finish
Now on around 14,000. I have been promised cake if I can do 50k in 4 days. Which means I have to do another 11k today. Crap. :suicide:
Apparently the word fuck appears [del]90[/del] [del]140[/del] [del]249[/del] [del]351[/del] 447 times. Classy.
This is one of those things where I get super pumped at the start but then lose all will after 2 or 3 days
I'll have a go at it. Pretty much forgot about this year's.
Perhaps I might complete the cliché and write novels about my RPG characters, though in original settings.
[editline]2nd November 2012[/editline]
But I've not read a book in years except Game of Thrones and I only started that today.
Is there a prize?

You get a certificate. You have to fill it in and print it off, and you also get these:

Started mine yesterday. About a 57 minute session and got done 2000 words. It's not great or anything, but it's something.
Im doing this for the first time this year. Im mostly just spitting it out as it comes to me, starting today I have around 1200 words in about 30 minutes. I honestly dont know why I didnt do this before, because I'm loving it.
Started today, first time doing it. I have no high hopes for succeeding at this, but I have to try, since I love writing. :v:
I write every year, I just don't show it to anybody.
Doing this now, doing a sci-fi novel focused a lot on the broader scope of the galaxy, the 'Coreworlds' (planets in our solar system) hold the best tech and fight between each other, while settlers of the galaxy are slowly civilizing it, terraforming planets with help from powerful families/rulers, kinda hard to sum up shortly. Have some sample dialog.
He once again picked up the communicator and typed in 'Weapons bay', as he put the communicator to his ear once again, he looked out to his salvage crew, still hard at work. "Weapons diagnostics, how is everything running down there?"
A few seconds of silence were all that were heard before the communicator started receiving voice transmission, the voice of a veteran mechanic, and one of Deon's most trustworthy pilots, Dane Ventriss."Well, something wasn't working, so we kicked it a bit and now it's on fire."
"The usual then?"
oh shit i totally forgot about this
i guess i'll write
starting tomorrow
yay procrastination
I'm writing a fantasy story for this that is both inspired by Apocalypse stories, the Victorian Era, Steampunk, and to a slight degree, film noir. It's kind of a "We gotta save da princess" kinda story but hopefully more interesting. I think I'm gonna call it Victoria.
Ive tried before but never succeeded, hopefully i can change that this year
I'm going to do this. Something to do about a homeless man traveling through time.
