The true cost of staging the 2012 Olympics is five times the figure given when London won the bid in 2005. A Sky investigation has revealed the final cost for the Games will be more than £12bn. However, associated costs could make the bill as high as £24bn - a staggering 10 times the original estimate. When London bid for the Games seven years ago the predicted cost of staging the Olympics and Paralympics was put at £2.37bn. The original public sector funding package, which is primarily cash to build the venues and provide security and policing, was increased in 2007 to about £9.3bn following a review. However Sky has counted an extra £2.4bn on top of the current £9.3bn public sector funding package for the Games.
http://news.sky.com/story/920409/sky-investigation-olympics-bill-tops-12bn The UK could have bought a Gerald R Ford class carrier and still have change over for some F35s. 40 of them in fact. It could have fed the poor and hungry of Africa for a year. It could have upgraded close to the entirety of the British rail network.
or 12 billion £1 hookers
or 12 billion £1 hookers
Or 37.5 billion 1 Canadian Dollar hookers. Or enough to fund the European Space Agency for seven years. Also more than double the annual budget of NASA.
You know, Hitler never spent that kind of money when he hosted the Olympics.
How the hell did you manage to spend that amount of money? Actually, jesus fuck, 2008 Beijing olympics apparently did cost 44bn USD - 28bn GBP. This is fucking expensive entertainment.
"Muh entertainment! I gotta watch Kenyans go fast!"
*Jamaicans
People are seriously surprised by this? Just look at the opening ceremony, should've told you this was going to be insanely expensive.
or 12 billion £1 hookers
Why would we need more? Parliament is already full of whores.

The UK still could afford to do all these things, doesn't mean it's going to, nor that it would have if not for the Olympics
or 12 billion £1 hookers
If Earth's whole population would consist out of £1 hookers, we'd still not have enough :v:
I like the Olympics, but the amount of money they put into it is just ridiculously disgusting.
Best thing is, the Olympics has brought us as a country very little in the way of income.
$6 billion went into the opening ceremony. $2 billion was for the various actors, musicians and costumes. $1 billion was for the ridiculous stage and fireworks. $3 billion was for getting Mr. Bean to play a piano with an umbrella.
money well spent
I don't understand why the olympics has to have so much national wankery in, is it so hard just to host a sports event.
With that kind of money, you could put 10 rovers on Mars or something
Best thing is, the Olympics has brought us as a country very little in the way of income.
Well remember about 1 billion people watched a promotion for London as a tourist destination. Even if 0,01% actually go to London as a result, and drag with them 1 other person for the trip that's still 200 000 tourists. That's like the worst-case scenario low estimate. That's a very low estimate, but considering that that's still a lot of money, and London will be then a viable tourist destination for all the people they recommend it to again, or the people who return. Add that to the income the Olympics already brings in and you got long-term profit.

I am not ditching the logic; it makes sense, I am just wondering if there's actual evidence of this really working.
apparently that horrid logo cost 400,000 pound
Best thing is, the Olympics has brought us as a country very little in the way of income.
Before the agrees start falling in to bandwagon, how do you even know this? Citation needed. Also, they aren't even over yet.

From the OP's article itself
As with previous Games, nobody has ever been able to accurately predict the final cost and it will not be until 2013 when we can say whether any increased tourism, economic benefits and the returns from the tenancy or sale of the Olympic venues and village made them a worthwhile investment.
Yay, let's make our country bankrupt.
I heard that the Olympic Opening ceremony cost £25 million. Most of the £12 billion probably went into building te stadiums.
What a horrible use of funds just to host a few sports and attract a bunch of tourists nobody wants.
Where does all the money come from anyway
