Eh. The lighting is cool and makes things spookier, but the amped up rifleman aggression combined with the gore sounds is just not something that seems.. right in this combination.

Either way, I've been using GZDoom with a ZDoom look-a-like presets, personally I just think it looks better and makes more sense.

Brutal Doom really doesn't fit the mood and aesthetic of Doom64.
The only thing I really dig out of this are the atmospheric effects and just a little extra blood.
Brutal Doom really doesn't fit the mood and aesthetic of Doom64.
ya a lot of people argue against doom 1 and 2 being horror games but if anything doom64 was directly one. the atmosphere combined with shitty n64 controls just made that game so fuckin hard to deal with. guess its irrelevant cuz its a mod but either way itll be interesting to see how this turns out
I don't think it's going to be just like BD is with the ridiculous amount of gore, kill moves ect. The creator replied in the youtube comments to somebody asking about executions and he said they do not fit the mood of D64, which means Brutal Doom64 will probably keep the dark and moody atmosphere with added good stuff like smooth animations, environmental effects and so forth
The AWP sound on that pistol isn't giving me much faith though. It just sounds so crazy out of place for what the game is.
It's mainly the sounds and the gore. The gore seems cartoony bright compared to the grungy, dark aesthetic and grainy textures and sprites. And the new sounds don't fit one ounce with the rest of the N64/PSX sounds. It's a good conversion to GZDoom and again I really don't mind the lighting tweaks and fake effects of fogs and such, but the 'Brutal' part is kind of half-assedly slapped on.
Doom 64 was such an odd beast. It looks closer to doom 3 and 4 if anything. I never really understood the need for a completely redesigned art style.
It was more to see what they could do with the engine on the hardware provided, in the end it created a mess of a game (the controls at least) but it looked really good.

I played through it again not too long ago on my laptop using the sourceport and it held up well. It was a different experience from classic Doom but that really lent to the charm of it. The corridors and areas were tighter and you had way less room to manoeuvre, but the claustrophobic feeling it gave you coupled with the ambient music just really spooked you out. I'm glad I didn't have to deal with the N64 controls like I had to back in the 2000's though. :v:
