• Ukraine bans Russian social networks (VK, Yandex, etc)
Kiev (AFP) - Ukraine on Tuesday blocked popular Russian social networks and an internet search engine as it expanded sanctions against the Kremlin for its alleged backing of a three-year war in the separatist east. President Petro Poroshenko signed a decree banning access to VK -- often referred to as Russia's Facebook -- and Ukraine's version of the popular Yandex search engine. It also cut access to the Mail.ru email provider, the Odnoklassniki (Classmates) social network as well as the Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab cybersecurity and anti-virus provider. The bans apply for three years. Kiev has been gradually expanding its list of banned Russian products and people forbidden from entering the country for either voicing support for the Kremlin's March 2014 annexation of Crimea or the self-proclaimed independence of Ukraine's east. Numerous Russian movies and television series have been forbidden. The ban also covers some books.
https://au.news.yahoo.com/world/a/35527816/ukraine-blocks-popular-russian-social-networks/#page1 One of my Ukrainian friends is seriously pissed off about this seeing as VK has a large number of Ukrainians on it aswell.
I can understand Ukraine of all people being pissed and wanting to sanction Russia, but this seems petty and doesn't seem like it'll help much. I doubt those sites really makes Russia that much money, and if it's an inconvenience to Ukrainians it'll probably be worse than if they hadn't banned it.

Most likely to combat pro-Russia propaganda.
I am pro-Ukrainian but I don't think Poroshenko has his people's interests at heart. There is no excuse for information suppression like this.
Most likely to combat pro-Russia propaganda.
Banning VK or Odnoklassniki would be like banning facebook for propaganda. It's fucking stupid.
Most likely to combat pro-Russia propaganda.
It's a little late to do that. The places where pro-Russia propaganda poses a threat are places where the Ukrainian government cannot enforce this law.
Ukraine tries soo hard to have nothing in common with Russia that they end up becoming more like Russia. Next stop, spreading of orthodox clericism and shitty movies with knock-off titles and garbage special effects. Also, to quickly clearyfy - yandex is main russian search engine, not a social network.
Also, to quickly clearyfy - yandex is main russian search engine, not a social network.
It is also a pile of shit.
That is hilarious, first the ban on georgian ribbons, now this. Poroshenko must be getting high off of all those European values. Apparently, the ban on Russian services is partly explained by informational security. According to Poroshenko, since some Ukrainian soldiers have a presence on VK, they share their geo data and inadvertently help Russian intelligence gathering. It does make sense, but is also paternalistic as fuck.
It is also a pile of shit.
It's useful for porn
If that's the case you'd think they would've done this way earlier.
Except it should've been easier to simply pick out soldiers who use vk accounts rather than ban entire population from it.
It's useful for porn
Mostly for when you don't expect it to show up. Yandex just knows exactly what you need even if you don't know it yet. [editline]16th May 2017[/editline]
Except it should've been easier to simply pick out soldiers who use vk accounts rather than ban entire population from it.
Yeah, and then the fact that VK actually inadvertently helped identify a couple of 'tourists' from the opposite side. Funny how social networks work. Some people can't handle it and go retarded.
How about the threat of information gathering? If I was a country with hostile at best relations to USA for example, NSA backdoors would be a very real threat.
VK is vital for the gray mass of the population, they chat with friends and get memes&audio off of it. You think a simple ban would stop them? They have already stocked up on VPNs. The only people which would be under the effect of the ban would be... my mom? And the mentally challenged folks. Source: Being Ukrainian.
It's useful for porn
This basically, I've had better luck reverse searching a cropped image on yandex than any attempt with google images. God bless those russians.
This sucks dick, honestly... All my childhood friends who are still in Ukraine are in VK, we use vk to communicate, well I guess I gotta enforce fb upon them.

Just for a reference: My friends are the kind of non-tech savvy people who copy paste massive amounts of "I do not consent to giving up copyrights to my photos" on their vk walls currently, literally logged in this morning and saw each for them repost same copy-paste text. There is no hope for them in VK, I would have better luck breaking into local ISP station and setting up proxy for whole village :v:
