• Would Facepunch be interested in having an internet radio station?

Okay, I've realized the flaws in this. Couldn't have it playing music 24/7, and keeping a good balance between playing "media for the masses" and being fair to the DJs is difficult. I currently own two servers. One of which I'm offering webhosting on, but my old one drifts around not being of much use: temporary Vent, L4D server, that sort of thing (until I found out I wasn't allowed to run source servers; violates the TOS ): ) Anyway. I contemplated putting Icecast on it and running an internet radio station from it - something my friends and I wouldn't mind doing. However, I have little time to operate the radio 24/7 due to college. Which leads me onto this question: If I supplied the hosting, would Facepunch collaborate to start its own internet radio station? It requires DJs around the clock, but that's not a bad thing, if enough people want to DJ. We can have slots to fill on a fortnightly rotation. As for the legality of streaming music to people: well, it's a grey area which I'm reading up on - but there are plenty of indie bands which want their music distributed freely (and some big artists too), if you can find these bands, you can play them on the station. I can't remember what happened to the last "FP Community Radio" but I recall there being one... they lost their server or something? To begin with I'm looking for, roughly, 30 people to help me with this. I'm at the "should I use shoutcast server or should I use icecast" stage, but I'm going to configure the server this evening. If anyone's got any comments or ideas, pitch in in this thread. If you're interested in committing yourself as a DJ, email me: radio@slashingedge.co.uk The idea may fall through, it may deem successful. But we could give it a try, no? :)
cal it galaxy news radiu lul!!!!!
And why do we need this?
You could give it a try indeed. :buddy:
this has been tried before and has failed. you need a license to play good music.
What on earth would make Facepunch different from any other godforsaken internet radio station started by some teenagers? Unless you come up with a way to make it better than Fall Out Boy and Dragonforce, this idea seems like a no-no.
I wouldn't bother worrying about the legality of it, I ran a shoutcast server for ages and I don't think companies care about it that much unless you're profiting from it I would listen to it as long as good music was being played on it
you need a license to play good music.
But this is the internet :( Also, i'd DJ for it.

I wouldn't mind running an hour-or-two long show myself, and I know my friends will have some aight ideas. One of them being a Guitar-head, the other listens to some nice old-school shit like The good ol' Doors. I'm not able to stream random music from my PC to the server either... not for 24 hours. My father would rage at me hogging our pitiful 2Mb down, 256k up internet. Like I said, though. I wasn't looking for listeners so much as people to actually do the shows ;P
What on earth would make Facepunch different from any other godforsaken internet radio station started by some teenagers? Different doesn't always equal good. And Fall Out Boy and Dragonforce are not radio stations. The fuck are you on about? I can play Dragonforce and Fall Out Boy... although the former has songs that sound the same all the time and the latter is 100% mainstream.
Why would you need DJs? Just get a playlist of 100 000 songs and put them to play, making some rock, metal, trance etc. hours sometimes, also some song voting what could come next by listeners.
i think you can work it such that you can have an unmonitored playlist going, but then if a DJ wants to hop on and start DJ'in then control would be shifted to him (solves the round the clock dj thing
I might listen to it, you could also read some of the more intresting threads

And vice versa. Also, Fall Out Boy and Dragonforce are bands. I am referring to as long as they don't play "hxc metal" and whiny teenage boy bands then it could be good,

However, like I said, I can't be streaming from my computer to the server 24/7, and the server itself only has 10Gb space, not enough for 100,000 songs. Plus I'm pretty sure uploading a bunch of mp3s to my server which I haven't paid royalties for violates my server hosting's TOS. The other option is to only run the radio at certain times of the day, the rest being dominated with 'BBC Radio 4' silence ;p
too bad facepunch has incredibly differing music tastes and this yet-another-attempt at a internet radio will probably fail. the only possible solution to this issue is to run different "stations" for different genres, but that requires more resources.
If this gets set up, I might listen to it. Now if only there was a way to stream it into Fallout 3...
I just posted to say NO.
I'd listen to it.
And why do we need this?
We dont. We dont actually need anything except food and water. Perhaps he thought it would be fun or something crazy like that. I say go for it if you can, just try and play fairly mainstream music. Variety is fine, but if you get DJs playing death metal or baroque, it may not go down so well.
I'd never use it but i'm sure others would find it useful.
What would we listen to? In my opinion a talk show about political and scientific events and topics with a bit of music would be more interesting that just music. Certain types of music interest certain people, others interest others.
I could do if people listen. Also I'd talk about various subjects, like all 2-am radio hosts do.
Have moderators and members talk on it. [editline]04:01PM[/editline] ...that and music together would make it very good. Have members call in on the radio if you can too.
Have moderators and members talk on it.
isn't that what facepunch's podcast is for?
I would listen to it as long as good music was being played on it
I would kill for a request system, why did those go out of fashion? [editline]21:07[/editline] If it played Pink Floyd, I would be all over it, and Rush. Could also have music from the Creationism Corner, some of those guys are extremely talented.
I'd suggest having a jukebox requests type system during periods where there are no DJ's on air, though from experience, I've seen a disproportionate amount of Rick Astley being played during that timeframe.
The only requests you'd get is "Spy sappin mah sentry" on a loop for 4 hours.
Ohai, i'm a moderator (or as you call it, DJ) at a local radio station and would actually really like to help. Internet radio is not so my business but i guess i can do it for FP. I'd participate if you can guarantee that we're at least in a grey zone and that i won't get fucked over if you get raped by the music industry. :v: [editline]10:34PM[/editline] Also, shoutcast with that Auto DJ addon which's name i forgot.
Err you'd need different stations for sure, I couldn't stand listening to metal and shit most facepunchers would request
You would probably need a permission for the songs you play. But, a good idea indeed.
