The company has filed a patent for a "needle-free blood draw" system that can be used either as a wearable on a person's wrist or as a hand-held device that takes blood from a fingertip or other parts of the body. The patent, which was published today and is still pending, describes a blood draw system that works by sending a surge of gas into a barrel containing a micro-particle that pierces the skin. Once blood is released from the skin, it's sucked up into the negative pressure barrel. "Such an application might be used to draw a small amount of blood, for example, for a glucose test," Google explains. This means that the technology could end up being used to help people with diabetes. We emailed Google about to ask about this, and a spokesperson replied "we hold patents on a variety of ideas — some of those ideas later mature into real products or services, some don't. Prospective product announcements should not necessarily be inferred from our patents."
Google's driverless car identification method. Blood matching. :tinfoil:
those blood glucose tests barely qualify as blood drawing imo
Sounds pretty tops for diabetics. The prick is absolutely nothing but if you're doing that shit constantly then you still fuck up the skin on your fingers a bit.
Would be awesome if it could draw enough blood for donation, but that would be too much :v:
Would be awesome if it could draw enough blood for donation, but that would be too much :v:
Just use compressed air to BLOW A FUCKING CHUNK OUT OF YOUR ARM Imagine the doctors telling needlephobic patients "Look, we've got a new technique to take people's blood if you don't like needles!" and then just blasting a hole in their body and collecting the blood.
Would be awesome if it could draw enough blood for donation, but that would be too much :v:
The funny part about blood donations is that when I did it twice in the past, they had to draw some testing blood from your fingertips first, and for me, it was a very unpleasant experience. But I didn't mind the rather massive needle in my arm they used to actually collect my blood. Something about getting my finger pricked was far worse.
wow we don't need to make it easier for vampires

But as Blah2 said, it's to do with having more nerves there.
that's literally what a needle does as well
Well yeah, but a 'bigger needle' doesn't normally extend to something the size of your fist, which is what I was mentally imaging.
needles are rude and pokey anything hiding them is for the better
If they're already in your blood, who needs needles?
blood glucose testers? Dang, here I was hoping doctors could legally give hickies now
blood glucose testers? Dang, here I was hoping doctors could legally give hickies now
Stop it! My parents are gonna know!
Neat, though this is only useful on a very small scale. When I hear of "blood drawing" I'm thinking more in terms of "We need 100 mL because we have lots and lots of tests to run".

Something about launching a sharp thing into your fingertip at high speed is just unappealing

And THEN I had to pull it out... and a customer gave me a grumpy sigh when I had to run off to go get a plaster.
blood glucose testers? Dang, here I was hoping doctors could legally give hickies now
That's kind of what this thing is
Needles don't bother me, but this does.
If they could actually do this for people who fucking hate needles like me that would be ace.

Something like this would be extremely helpful especially for children.
