Theres no thread on Dev? How can this be?
Devin Garret Townsend (born May 5, 1972) is a Canadian musician and record producer. He was the founder, songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist in extreme metal band Strapping Young Lad from 1994 to 2006 and has had an extensive career as a solo artist.
After performing in a number of metal bands in high school, Townsend was discovered by a record label in 1993 and was asked to perform lead vocals on Steve Vai's album Sex & Religion. After recording and touring with Vai, Townsend was discouraged by what he found in the music industry, and vented his anger on a solo album released under the pseudonym Strapping Young Lad. He soon assembled a band under the name, and released the critically acclaimed City in 1997. Since then, he has released three more albums with Strapping Young Lad, along with solo material released under his own independent record label, HevyDevy Records. Townsend's solo albums, a diverse mix of hard rock and progressive metal, have featured a varying lineup of supporting musicians. In 2002 he formed The Devin Townsend Band, a dedicated lineup which recorded and toured for two of his solo releases.
Townsend's trademark production style, featuring a heavily multitracked wall of sound, has been compared to the styles of Phil Spector and Frank Zappa. His versatile vocal delivery ranges from screaming to singing, and his songwriting is similarly diverse. Townsend's musical style is rooted in metal, and his albums are written to express different aspects of his personality.
In 2007, Townsend disbanded both Strapping Young Lad and The Devin Townsend Band in order to spend more time with his family and less time touring. Townsend has since produced a number of albums for other groups, and continues to write and release self-produced albums from his home studio. Townsend is currently working on a four-album series called The Devin Townsend Project, with each album being written in a different style. The first entry in the series, Ki, was released in May 2009 while the second album, Addicted, is set for a November 17th release date.

Yeahhh SYL FTW!! "City" is my favorite SYL album :D

The New Black is mine. City is a close second
his band stuff bothers me but I love SYL
Honestly, he is one of this generations best musicians. I'm so glad to have grown up in the same city as he did, and even live in the same town as he does now too.
I've bought 5 or 6 of his albums, and they're all really impressive. His SYL stuff is amazing and great metal, but his Devin Townsend stuff and the other names he went by for a while are amazing too. Prog stuff with some great, great work done on them. He's my hero, or one of them.
I'm seeing him this January. He's on tour with Cynic, Scale the Summit, and Between the Buried and Me.
I'm really interested in his four album project. I've heard from SYL and thought it was alright.
I only have one Strapping Young Lad album 'Alien' and it was brilliant, I loved every track on it
Reading he had a mental breakdown and was institutionalized did not surprise me.
Reading the lyrics to "Alien" had my brain melting.
"Love?" is the only song on that album that's semi-comprehensible. And I like that song. The rest of the album, well...
When people say that if you love SYL then you'll like Sybreed, I love Sybreed but I don't much care for SYL. Still, the skullet is awesome.
So I bought Ki and Addicted. Two amazing, if very different, albums. I am greatly looking forward to seeing him live come January.
this guy's hilarious. how he just openly hates "widdy diddly shit" is great
Tried to find addicted in HMV today and instead was facing a wall of twilight, My Chemical romance and 50 cent in the "metal" section.
HMV you fucking disgust me.
Good artist.

No :(. I have a local store that has some classic shit in there, for cheap too. Doesn't have much SYL or DTB unfortunately. Try ordering Addicted off of devintownsend.com. I didn't order mine yet but that's because I'm waiting for the box set
Yeah i'm gonna order it after spending a few hours learning straws pulled at random r might try to learn hyperdrive.

Addicted is far better than Ki IMO. Ki was just way too mellow for me. Can't wait for Deconstruction. It's supposed to be heavier than SYL.
Devin Townsend is a fucking beast, he can do anything. He's probably the most versatile voice in metal.
Okay listened to addicted, and the tracks are fucking awesome, Universe in a Ball! and the new version of Hyperdrive is just spectacular.
Numbered! is just great, difficult to play though still trying to get the arpeggios
