Happy birthday Tesla! Musk donates 1M to Telsa museum.
Back in May, Matthew Inman, creator of The Oatmeal series of Web comics, made a public plea to Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk to donate a large sum of money to help make the Nikola Tesla project a reality. On Thursday, which coincidentally would be Nikola Tesla's 158th birthday, Musk answered the plea with a very generous donation. On his blog, Inman announced that Musk will be donating $1 million to a Nikola Tesla museum, and will be putting a Tesla Supercharging station in the museum's parking lot.

As some of you may know, I recently published a cartoonist's review of my Tesla Model S. In the second half of the review, I asked Elon Musk to donate toward the completion of a Nikola Tesla Museum, a project I've been working on since 2012.
Within a few hours of posting my review, Elon Musk tweeted that he'd be happy to help.
Well, probably makes sense to donate to a museum dedicated to his 20th century equivalent.
Also, do you think Elon Musk would ever try to make a new Wardenclyffe Tower? 'cause THAT would make for quite the story, even if Tex Murphy did it recently.
telsa
god these misspellings are killing me

that tower is a terrible idea tbh if you want to transmit energy around
Would be cool if they rebuilt the tower as a display.
I don't get people's obsession with Tesla. Edison was a way more important guy both business-wise and invention-wise than Tesla was. Tesla was a crazy guy who managed to create an efficient AC electric motor. Anyone who suggests that we use radar to track submarines and thinks you can transmit power through the air with no negative side effects is not a genius in my book. Edison perfected the lightbulb and pioneered medical X-rays (which Tesla didn't do because he was afraid of them - Edison did accidentally kill his assistant, but the assistant volunteered, knowing the risks, and Edison paid his salary and expenses while the assistant was dying. His death haunted Edison for years.) He was also an amazing salesman, something Tesla was not (Westinghouse was the salesman for Tesla).

Didn't Edison steal a lot of inventions from Tesla?
Didn't Edison steal a lot of inventions from Tesla?
if you mean that he worked for edison to redesign an electrical system and then resigned after a pay dispute then yes
. . .and will be putting a Tesla Supercharging station in the museum's parking lot
Thats the real prize.
you guys also got to remember that tesla didn't think subatomic particles existed, tried for years to disprove modern physics, supported eugenics, tried to build a "death ray", and thought he had been contacted by aliens

How internet people view X:
1. Have you guys heard about X? I only knew about Y, but X is pretty cool too.
2. Oh my god, X is so cool! Why do people only know about Y?
3. Y fucking sucks, fuck Y, X is way better than Y and people should know about it!
4. Guys, stop fucking talking about X already, and how it's better than Y. Y is better than X.
Ad Nauseam. X/Y being Tesla/Edison, Indie/Mainstream, or just general lesser known/well known.
Both Tesla and Edison were crazy important. Just because one is more popular right now doesn't mean the other automatically sucks.

Edison was a businessman, and Tesla was a scientist - very good one. Obviously the reason that you don't get people's "obsession" with Tesla is because you don't have enough knowledge on the matter.
Edison didn't invent shit, his employees invented stuff and he patented them.
tried to build a "death ray"
He actually called it "peace ray", not "death ray".

Edison also shot X-Rays into people's eyes, nearly killed his own damn self with X-rays (Edison, too, was afraid of them), publicly executed animals using AC to try and prove a point and muster support for a highly inefficient transmission system, stole the credit for the electric light-bulb (he bought the carbon filament patent, and then one of his lab workers perfected the filament, for which Edison took credit). Edison also flopped horrendously with his "CONCRETE EVERYTHING!" business idea (because what could possibly be more comfortable than a concrete love-seat?), and in essence was basically a IRL Cave Johnson, except not nearly as likable or funny.
Tesla also invented more than the induction motor and AC, he also invented radio, wireless remote control, the tesla coil (the descendents of which were used in CRT displays for years), and was a proponent of sustainable energy such as hydroelectric and geothermal.

it was still bullshit psuedoscience and laughably unworkable on any plane of reality
My apparatus projects particles which may be relatively large or of microscopic dimensions, enabling us to convey to a small area at a great distance trillions of times more energy than is possible with rays of any kind. Many thousands of horsepower can thus be transmitted by a stream thinner than a hair, so that nothing can resist."[5] The nozzle would send concentrated beams of particles through the free air, of such tremendous energy that they will bring down a fleet of 10,000 enemy airplanes at a distance of 200 miles from a defending nation's border and will cause armies to drop dead in their tracks.[3][4]
Marconi used Tesla patents.
Every time Tesla comes up I freak the hell out because I don't know how the fuck you're supposed to pronounce Nikola

Edison and Dally (the assistant who died) pioneered X-rays in medicine and invented the fluoroscope design that we still use today. If you're going to say "yeah but he probably stole that too," I'd like to see some proof.
I just noticed something, not only is the tesla logo a T, but its an upside down representation of mjolnir. Who wielded mjolnir, Thor, god of thunder and lightning.

Edison invented the phonograph, the carbon microphone, a practical electric lightbulb, and (independently of another previous inventor) the alkaline battery. Edison thought he could make a death ray (sorry, "peace ray"), wireless energy, and an earthquake machine. He also believed in eugenics and fell in love with a pigeon.
You can cherry pick things to make anyone sound good.
Tesla totally went crazy later on, I don't think anyone is denying that.
Guys. Edison and Telsa both contributed to science and like many smart people, they were fucking weird, please slow your roll.

Edison and Tesla had their misunderstandings but for the most part the details of their relationship is a prime example of the internet getting it wrong.
It's not as though these notions weren't already popular on the internet but I blame The Oatmeal for taking a bunch of falsehoods and making them mainstream.

The vast majority of Edison's patents are other people's inventions he paid to put his name on.
He had a workshop where other people made shit that he would claim as his own. Those people were paid and were totally fine with this, but the only thing those inventions have to do with him is his name. Yes he made some things himself, but he was a business man first, and inventor second.
He also hired kids to kidnap unattended pets and then electrocute them (the pets not the kids) to death to demonstrate how "horrible" AC is, despite AC being superior for what he wanted to use DC for.
Sure Tesla was some crazy dude who wanted to marry a pigeon and obsessed with the number 3, but he didn't murder people's cats.

Is this why everyone and their dog on the Internet seems to have an opinion on Tesla and Edison as if they actually knew them personally? And it's all the same. Tesla good, Edison bad. I find it hard to believe it was so black and white.

He didn't steal people's cats and dogs, like the Oatmeal claims. He ordered his technicians to demonstrate it on stray cats and dogs and unwanted cattle and horses. But you're right, this completely negates anything Edison has ever done for us and makes Tesla incredibly important.

Edison might've been a dick but he wasn't the invention-stealing idiot that the Oatmeal claims he is.

It does seem like the Oatmeal responded to this, although his absence of any sources or citations (which haven't really been provided by either party) makes it unclear whether or not any of this is legit, either.

Edison stole a fucking ton of Tesla's ideas, IIRC.
Edison perfected the lightbulb and pioneered medical X-rays
Ehh, I'd say that Edison can lay claim to pioneering fluroroscopy, as he designed the calcium tungstate screens, which are vastly better to barium platinocyanide used prior (very faint image) and allowed for fluoroscopy (and he also started making fluoroscopy machines) to be done, but then he pulled out from experimenting with them a short while before his glassblower died, in 1903.
Rontgen was clearly the true pioneer of medical x-ray, discovering it with Lenard and Crookes tubes, and John Hall-Edwards the pioneer of clinical usage of the plain-film radiograph. (which is what most of us think when we hear medical xray)
He definitely left a lasting impact on fluoroscopy though, the calcium tungstate screens.
Also, whilst he didn't really have any major discoveries with them, to say that Tesla did not use them at all is a lie. Tesla did do experiments with x-rays, he used both the standard Crookes tubes of the time and tubes of his own design. I'll agree that he wasn't the super awesome magic man people say he was, but he was a decent inventor, even if he was very troubled.(notably obsessively compulsive, refused flat out to accept that the atom could be split, and composed of subatomic elements and such, oh and he refused that the electron is a charge carrier and many more flaws)
