The dispute between former City of Custer community development director Rex Harris and the City of Custer appears to have been settled, with Harris expected to receive financial compensation from the city for what he said was nearly 800 hours of unused sick leave during his time with the city.
Harris said the city made an offer for a monetary settlement, which he countered, although he could not say for sure whether or not it was accepted. Custer Mayor Gary Lipp said last week that the issue had been settled.
“They weren’t paying me for sick leave. That is what I wanted,” Harris said. “I felt I deserve that.”
Harris said the city’s personnel manual states employees can get paid for 60 percent of their accrued sick leave up to 240 hours. He added that he still has not been given a reason for his dismissal.
Harris was put on administrative leave by Lipp April 14 and was subsequently fired the following Thursday after nearly eight years of serving as the city’s community development director.
