It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year.
Also, Iwata said Nintendo's new membership service would play a key role in NX.
Nintendo, together with DeNA, will jointly develop a new membership service which encompasses the existing Nintendo 3DS and Wii U systems, the new hardware system with a brand-new concept, NX, and smart devices and PCs, and Nintendo will be the primary party to operate this new membership service. Unlike the Club Nintendo membership service that Nintendo has been operating, the new membership service will include multiple devices and create a connection between Nintendo and each individual consumer regardless of the device the consumer uses. This membership will form one of the core elements of the new Nintendo platform that I just mentioned.

Starting this off by saying this is a very early announcement and was made to dispel rumors that they were dropping hardware. If it's new hardware, it's most likely an actual 3DS successor and likely won't release until 2017. If it's a new console, 2018.
I'm betting on a wii u successor. that thing has been out for 3 years as is and is a bit dated next to the xbox one and ps4
Hasn't stopped them from making some of the best-looking games of this generation.
the thing about nintendo games though is that they take an art direction that works well with their hardware rather than all the xbox and playstation games that all go for realistic graphics. on non-exclusives the graphics are generally on par or slightly better than on the PS3
I'm betting on a wii u successor. that thing has been out for 3 years as is and is a bit dated next to the xbox one and ps4
Far too early for a Wii U Successor. Much too early. One thing to keep in mind is that they said NX will bridge the gap between Mobile and Console. It's a dedicated gaming device. So not QoL. Not VR based on Miyamoto's comments on it. So it might be a third pillar system. (AKA, what the DS was to the GBA. Not a successor, as there was a new Game Boy in development at the time as well.) the placement of NX on this slide seems to imply that it's a third pillar system as well.

That's the benefit nintendo has, they don't have to play catch-up with the others
Maybe it's a more portable VR thing, going with the trend.
Hasn't stopped them from making some of the best-looking games of this generation.
I'd say they're the most polished looking games of this generation in terms of actual graphical fidelity it's not that great.
Maybe they are making a Nintendo-sanctioned PC NintendOS
If it's a new handheld then i'm glad that i didn't get the new 3ds.
I doubt it is a successor to the Wii U, it could just be another Game System along side the Wii U and 3DS.
The much bigger news here is that Nintendo is finally making games for smartphones and tablets. They made the right compromises here: no ports, and recruiting an experienced mobile developer for help.
If its bridging into mobile and PC, maybe it'll draw a larger audience to nintendo again and thus increase sales. Personally, I feel they should just work with what they have right now (Wii U/3DS) to create more software to justify the costs along with opening it up for more 3rd party devs.
Hot damn if they're actually porting shit to PC that'd be incredible.
They said they would not put their games on any other platform, except for Phones now but I highly doubt they would put their games on PC.
They're not porting to PC, they're just talking about bringing their Club Nintendo account successor thing to PC. I say think Miiverse but bigger.

We don't even know what type of platform it is: it could be handheld, console, or something else. If it is a successor to either Wii U or 3DS, we don't know which one, so potential consumers don't even know which platform to hold off on purchasing. That said, if we're only going to see a formal introduction of the NX in 2016 at the earliest, that does put it in perfect timeline position for it to be either the 3DS's or Wii U's Gen9 successor. System announcements generally take place over a year before the system is actually released, and this would mean we'd be seeing NX out in late 2017 at the earliest. It would also fall in line with the 3DS's and Wii U's announcement years of 2010 and 2011 respectively. That lines up with the usual 5-to-6-year generation cycle (aside from the abnormally-long Gen7) and should still give enough time for the current systems to fill out their libraries and get healthy lifetime sales numbers. The end of 2017 is still over two years away yet. I wonder if it'll be the oft-rumored console-handheld fusion direction people are thinking they'll be going in; something akin to a suped-up Wii U with all the important guts in the GamePad component and the traditionally "console" part merely a means to stream to TV.
I honestly think it may be the rumored "hybrid" concept: Simultaneously a handheld and console announcement, where it's either: A) there will be a "console" model with superior graphics and a "handheld" model that accepts the media of the console version, but compensates by setting the LODs lower. or B) the handheld is the platform, but the console acts like a spec booster when used with a TV (which is how I feel the Wii U tablet should have worked, it feels like a bit of lost potential not to at least have it be capable of offscreen play without the console itself being on)
"Codename NX" really
Nintendo, together with DeNA, will jointly develop a new membership service which encompasses the existing Nintendo 3DS and Wii U systems, the new hardware system with a brand-new concept, NX, and smart devices and PCs, and Nintendo will be the primary party to operate this new membership service.
This part is kind of intriguing.
I hope they're talking about an actual Steam-like account system for once, having everything tied to your console is awful
Nintendo Wiiu3dsxlplus
Fuck off Nintendo why can't you just put your games on Android and ios? I don't need another gaming box when I have android TV and my tablet. Why can't you just focus on games/software? I don't see any point to owning a new console when I'm getting the new nvidia shield (android TV console) for $200 and will be miles ahead of your hardware.
They need at least four years to come up with another terrible name for their handheld that confuses customers and kills their sales.
Maybe it's some sort of cross-platform service like steam with the new console being like a steambox or the amazon fire TV. If it's a successor to Club Nintendo then it seems likely it would be something like that. One can hope that this could mean the inclusion of tablets and smartphones on that slide means that Nintendo may start releasing more games for third party hardware, but that seems unlikely.
I remember reading something about Nintendo. Where they said something along the lines of if they stopped making consoles that would make Nintendo less Nintendo. But when I think of Nintendo I think of their games and not their hardware. Why is it so difficult for a game company to focus on games and hardware companies focus on hardware? With android basically being Linux there games would run awesome and be available to a shit load of people. Not to mention it will give android TV the boost it needs :)
They've said no to the "Hybrid" console before. (such a thing wouldnt work with their business model anyway)
I'm waiting til the next zelda comes out to get a wii u. They'll probably have some kind of bundle and I'll get it then
