Disney Research, Pittsburgh (DRP), has created a new sensory based technology called Surround Haptics, which allows gamers and film audiences to feel a range of sensations wherever they wear the technology. The haptics could revolutionize the gaming and certain genres of the film industry, while also providing a minefield for classification boards around the world, already worried about naughty games and websites. The tactile technology uses a low-resolution grid of vibrating actuators to generate ‘phantom’ high-resolution, continuous, moving tactile strokes and sensations on human skin. According to DRP, Surround Haptics “is based on a carefully designed and thoroughly evaluated algorithm derived from psychophysical modeling of tactile illusions.” The Mouse House researchers add that the algorithms are highly scalable and could be used anywhere on the skin, “such as on the back, forearm, torso, palm, thigh and even on the sole of the foot.” “This technology has the capability of enhancing the perception of flying or falling, of shrinking or growing, of feeling bugs creeping on your skin. The possibilities are endless,” DRP senior research scientist Ali Israr says. The researchers have a prototype gaming chair which they are currently publicly demonstrating but DRP claim the concept can be easily embedded into clothing, gloves, sports equipment and mobile computing devices. ® While the technology opens a whole new level of experiential and virtual reality entertainment across gaming, movies and music, it can also be applied for uses such as communications for the disabled, emergency services and remote transport.
continuous, moving tactile strokes and sensations on human skin
Hot :q:
I wonder when the first case of someones clothes getting hacked will occur?
I wonder when the first case of someones clothes getting hacked will occur?
what?
2015: With the revolutionizing of sensory based entertainment, Disney becomes nothing more than a gimmicky porn company.
Whenever i see the words in that article "Disney research" I imagine some batshit insane factory where scientists are all banging shit together till something happens while the whole building is made of gears
Where are they getting the "neuro" bit from? This doesn't do anything with your nerves, it basically just pokes you.
Where are they getting the "neuro" bit from? This doesn't do anything with your nerves, it basically just pokes you.
Nerves transmit pain for your brain to perceive, this causes pain, nerves are involved. Yes
Nerves transmit pain for your brain to perceive, this causes pain, nerves are involved. Yes
It doesn't interact directly with the nerves though, it's just haptics. And any entertainment medium focused on pain from Disney would be pretty creepy.
Imagine this being used by horror games (e.g. Amnesia) having you think that bugs crawl over your skin. But what if the set glitches and overloads everything at once? Possible ouch.
It doesn't interact directly with the nerves though, it's just haptics. Since this is stimulating parts of your skin, and allowing you to feel like you are in the game, yes, there are nerves involved. Pain isn't the only things that nerves pick up.

And I never said that. [editline]11th August 2011[/editline] Is "neurotic" a form of "neuro", or is it only used when talking about neurosis? I'm not good with grammar.
I would go online and fuck everything and everyone would feel me
I would go online and fuck everything and everyone would feel me
Haptics user snazzyjaguar has been added to your sensations block list.
:q: I can think of a few alternate applications.
Was reminded of that immediately.

First game I'd play with this would be The Witcher 2.
Wow, Brave New World much?
Holy shit, this sounds pretty cool. At first media was limited to sight and sound, and now they're branching out - at long last - into touch. Combine this with taste and smell, and you've got some pretty immersive shit right there.
I see "Disney" and I see "Kingdom Hearts"
While the technology opens a whole new level of experiential and virtual reality entertainment across gaming, movies and music, it can also be applied for uses such as communications for the disabled, emergency services and remote transport.
but nobody gives a shit about that last part think of the porn
First game I'd play with this would be The Witcher 2.
Fuck yeah, having sex with the whores and reloading my save when I run out of money :v:
Fuck yeah, having sex with the whores and reloading my save when I run out of money :v:
Saddest thing I've read today and I've read that thread about the lady who treats her husband's ashes as him.
Yeah I can definitely see a revolution in the pornographic video game industry because of this.
someone hook this up to I Wanna Be The Guy and force conservatives to play it.
Whenever i see the words in that article "Disney research" I imagine some batshit insane factory where scientists are all banging shit together till something happens while the whole building is made of gears
I'm imagining that fucking Mikey Mouse costume from Disneyland jumping around. Fuck, I can't seem to take anything Disney makes serious.
Where are they getting the "neuro" bit from? This doesn't do anything with your nerves, it basically just pokes you.
The word neuro is only used in the title of the thread. The word doesn't appear in the article because they call it haptics instead so you are correct. [editline]12th August 2011[/editline] Ok, the Register calls it "Neurogaming", but they're not exactly an authority on the topic.
Imagine this being used by horror games (e.g. Amnesia) having you think that bugs crawl over your skin. But what if the set glitches and overloads everything at once?
Feeling things even when you're hit by a gatherer? Ouch, guess it would be that much more encouragement not to get caught though.
Imagine walkin through a small cramped dark tunnel in a horror game and feeling the spider's webs clinging to your face.
