Argentina's coast guard says it sank a Chinese fishing vessel that was fishing in a restricted area off the South American country's coast. The Argentine Naval Prefecture chased and eventually sank the Lu Yan Yuan Yu 010 vessel after detecting it illegally fishing within the country's exclusive economic zone, officials said Tuesday. First, according to a statement from the Argentine coast guard, warning shots were fired. The Chinese vessel, Argentine authorities said, responded by turning off its lights and deliberately trying to crash. ... The vessel sank, and four people on board -- three crew members and the captain -- were rescued by Argentina's coast guard. China said that the other 28 crew members who'd been on the Chinese vessel were saved by Chinese fishing vessels nearby. ... China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on Argentina to investigate the incident and ensure the safety of the crew. The statement added that the Chinese embassy in Argentina had "urgently taken up the matter" with Argentine authorities.
Source: CNN
Not sure how illegal fishing warrants a warning shot but if the Chinese responded as they did though then that's their fault for provoking them.
This should be done more often. Poaching should not be tolerated.
This should be done more often. Poaching should not be tolerated.
I agree with this notion. Poaching won't stop unless punishments are a lot harsher.
I agree with this notion. Poaching won't stop unless punishments are a lot harsher.
Though there's a lot of socioeconomic factors behind poaching that need to be addressed, harsh punishment should be done. It's not petty theft. You're disrupting a carefully calculated balance. In the case of fishing, legal commercial quotas are set for a reason, and fishing outside those quotas and seasons, has an impact on the entire industry. You may be doing it to put food on the table for your family, but you're also stealing from everyone that eats aswell.

Regardless, they sank a civilian vessel with all of its crew still on board. That's a really fucking risky thing to do, especially that other Chinese vessels had to pick up most of the crew.
Not sure how illegal fishing warrants a warning shot. The usual and most sane response to warning shots IMO is to turn around..but that's just me.

Not a lot of choices for the coast guard in that situation.
Hong Kong es Argentina
Shooting down fishing vessels is apparently a thing?! How fucked in the head are these 'coast guards'?!
Shooting down fishing vessels is apparently a thing?! How fucked in the head are these 'coast guards'?!
Did you not read the part where the fishermen turned off the lights on their boat and tried to ram it into the Coast Guards' boat, giving them no choice but to sink it or potentially lose with their lives. The U.S Navy also has a rule that if a vessel gets within X distance of one their ships without permission or doesn't heed to any warnings, they will fire upon it no matter what kind of vessel it is. And there's a good reason for that And knowing how some Chinese tend to be, if they had successfully rammed and sunk the Coast Guards' boat they probably would've left any surviving guardsmen for dead or kill them so there wouldn't be any witnesses since they were willing to ram them which could've sunk their boat too depending how big the Coast Guard's boat was.
Chinese really don't seem to respect territorial waters.
Chinese really don't seem to respect territorial waters.
Except theirs, which they basically claim all the waters. Example, South China Sea dispute. Solution? Claim it all.
Chinese really don't seem to respect territorial waters.
Doesn't seem like the respect anything at all, really.
Hong Kong es Argentina
What about Macau? :^(
Regardless, they sank a civilian vessel with all of its crew still on board. That's a really fucking risky thing to do, especially that other Chinese vessels had to pick up most of the crew.
They were going to ram, it was either one ship sinking or two.
Shooting down fishing vessels is apparently a thing?! How fucked in the head are these 'coast guards'?!
You try ramming most any military ship you will get lit the fuck up. Barnes had it right when he referenced the Cole.
I still wonder why the hell the Chinese thought it acceptable to respond to a warning shot by turning off their lights and attempting to ram a coast guard ship. That said, I can see a big shitstorm brewing since they might claim that the coast guard left some of them for dead after sinking them.
For those who don't know china also has a chinese fishing militia that they use to harass other countries and press their claims for maritime territory and gather inteligence
Something tells me that China's treatment of it's neighbors and other countries is going to come back to bite it in the ass one of these days aka China is probably letting it's power and size getting to it's head too much.

The US couldn't even unify them like this, but now they all have a common annoyance so they're patrolling the water together
the falkland islands belong to china
