• Car sounds like it's going to explode.

My car sounds like it's about to launch off into space and time travel. The noise that comes out of the engine now, only when accelerating, has become extremely bad. For example, if I'm accelerating at 3000 RPM, it sounds like I should be well and above 8000. I've only now noticed this by researching info about my car, watching videos and stuff, etc. All I know at this point is that it shouldn't be making this noise, and I wanted to know if anyone of you could help me out. I have a 1998 Honda Accord LX, 2.3 4inline with 173000 miles on it. I really don't know where to start looking to find where this problem is occurring. I mean, I realize its an old car, but similarly aged cars with similar miles on it do not make the sound that the engine currently is. As I stated before, the horrible sound only occurs when I'm accelerating. When I take off the gas, it sounds like it should, which leaves me to believe that it is an issue with the exhaust. I know absolutely nothing about cars; never opened one up to prod around with or anything, so is there anything that I can do for free or cheaply to figure this out?
Uhm.. video? Or better description at very least? I think babies sound horrible, does your car sound like a baby when accelerating?
Sorry; I don't really know how to describe the noise that well. The best I can do, other than posting a video, is that at 3000 RPM, it sounds like its MUCH higher than 3000 RPM. I'll try to get a video tomorrow to do justice.
If your parked and you floor the accelerator and then let off the accelerator is there any popping sounds? If there is then its an exhaust leak
Lol.. yes please, video. A broken exhaust would be louder... but I don't see it having the whine of higher RPMs. It seems like an obvious difference in noise.. but perhaps not. When you shoot the vid, if it's cold around you... set the camera on the ground so we can see the underbelly of the car and watch for the telltale exhaust coming from anywhere BUT the tailpipe?
The noise in the cabin seems to be muffled; I don't know why. In my perspective, it sounds exactly the same inside as it does in the first clip. Also, all three clips, I capped off RPM at 4000. Didn't go any higher.
Dad watched me look at this thread aswell and he says that you should adjust the ignition
Certainly doesn't sound like bad exhaust. Ok, good. Thank you for the video. I think I may have possibly maybe heard some rocker arm clatter or something when the engine would wind down... other than that it basically sounded ok. Just to verify, it does indeed make the sound when it's sitting still and just revving, yes? If so could you get us one more video of the engine with the hood open while revving it? :)

[editline]16th January 2012[/editline] Driving around, it sounds about the same, except there's longer periods of time when you can actually hear the difference between the gas being pressed down at 3000 vs just coasting at 3000.
Simple enough question: Has the car always done this? Or did it just start recently? If the latter, when did it start?
Flywheel and/or bearings.
Simple enough question: Has the car always done this? Or did it just start recently? If the latter, when did it start?
Recent. About a year ago.
I don't really know, because all cars in my city sound even noisier(Ever defeated Giygas?). And when i mean noisier,it's like driving a hypercharged engine winth no screws, loose plastic and metal, plus rust flying everywhere. Oh,and it makes a Giygas sound. People just say it's a exshaust+plus old engine. Also, did you check the oil? If there is none, then pour alot in,wait and see what happens.
That sounds like every other F22 I've ever heard in stock trim. There is nothing wrong with that engine, you're either paranoid or really dumb.
That sounds like every other F22 I've ever heard in stock trim. There is nothing wrong with that engine, you're either paranoid or really dumb.
Yea... minus the insult I agree. Unless there's something the microphone didn't pick up I heard nothing.
Didn't mean to insult, but it's as if he's trying to avoid everyone telling him it's fine.
combustion engines actually operate on explosions so if anything be concerned when it DOESNT sound like its going to explode
Recent. About a year ago.
Just thought I'd ask but, what did it sound like before?
Bomb squad. Call one.
