Known for their long, psychedelic jams, the band quickly gathered a following and was known for giving free meals and health care to their followers that would follow them around the country in their early days. The band allowed followers to tape recordings of their shows and allowed them to be distributed non-commercially which today is a hobby for many Deadheads. Their music incorporated many different styles such as rock, jazz, blues, country, bluegrass, folk, psychedelic and electronic styles. They have released a fair number of studio albums but their highlights have always been their live recordings since they contain improvisation and longer jams. Though the two studio albums Workingman's Dead and American Beauty are awesome and are among my favorite Dead recordings. Jerry Garcia: Jerry was one of the founders and the leader of the Grateful Dead, and was the lead guitar player. He always made playing look so easy and sadly he passed away in 1995, probably from all the drugs he did. The band still tours without him but they've never been the same though I saw one of their recent shows and they still rocked with Warren Hayes on lead. Bobby Weir: The rhythm guitarist and he wrote and co-wrote many of the songs. Really solid and soulful playing. Phil Lesh: Phil Lesh, the bass player, was classically trained and was a follower of Free Jazz prior to joining the Dead in 1965. Also the live albums Live/Dead and Europe '72 are excellent as well. The studio albums Workingman's Dead and American Beauty are really really good too.
I went to one of their concerts... err it was Phil Lesh, Bob Weir and some other guys... There were people selling regular old rocks in the parking lot.

Lemme tell you though if you ever get to see a band on acid it incredibly enhances the experience.
