Hard-up Labour launched the poster competition in a bid to save money on design after a raft of parodies of Tory ads swept the internet.
The idea was inspired by campaign techniques used by US president Barack Obama.
The Gene Hunt theme was the brainchild of 24-year-old activist Jacob Quagliozzi from St Albans, Herts, and was worked up by Labour's ad agency Saatchi and Saatchi.
Mr Cameron said he was "flattered" by the comparison with Gene Hunt.
"I think there will be thousands of people, millions of people, in the country who wish it was the 1980s and that police were out there feeling collars and nicking people instead of filling in forms," he said.
"If Labour can't afford that, then maybe we will lend them the money."[/quote]
