A series of newly released photographs reveal the final moments of a New Jersey student’s life before he was killed by a bear.
Darsh Patel, a 22-year-old Rutgers University student, was hiking with four friends in the Apshawa Preserve in West Milford, New Jersey, in September when he was mauled to death by a 300-pound black bear.
On Tuesday, West Milford police released five photos from Patel’s phone that show the bear standing behind a log just 100ft away from the hikers, the Record reported. In each photo, the bear appears to be getting closer to the hikers. Police said the bear in the photos was the same bear that killed Patel just a short while later.

I thought the picture was going to be just before the bear swiped at him.
Now that'd be a kodiak moment. A horrible one, but a kodiak moment none the less.
So did he just stand there taking pictures as it got closer and closer expecting it to give him a hug or something?
To be fair, black bears are usually rather docile.
Someone forgot to make lots of noise
Black bears are absolutely terrified of people, you gotta really piss them off to rile them up. I've never heard of an unprovoked black bear attack.
He was with four people and still lost? What did he do? Play dead like an idiot? You are supposed to fight black bears if they attack because black bears generally only attack unprovoked if starving.
I can't bear to think of what was going through his head right after he took this picture.

iirc they split up when they ran away and he was apparently attacked when he was alone

I doubt many people have the balls to stand up to a 300 pound bear, regardless of what kind it is. Especially when unarmed
It's Kodak not Kodiak that's all

Well you either do it or you die. You can't out run a black bear and if they attack they intend to kill you, so you stand and fight. You don't have to win, you just have to establish that you aren't prey.
Also if you are in the woods completely unarmed in bear country then you are an idiot.
This is really bears 101.

Makes me glad I know, "If it's brown, stay down; if it's black, fight back."

I don't get the pun.
I was going to correct OP only to find someone did and got dumbed, so can someone explain it? All i know is Kodiak is a city, which isn't in New Jersey.
Edit: I was legitimately asking what the joke was. Not sure why someone thought that was dumb.

The problem is that they split up. That was an incredibly stupid thing to do.

Kodiak bears
Back in the old days when shit was in black and white and people still put little rolls of film into their cameras, Kodak was a company that made film. The tagline 'a Kodak moment' was pretty well known.

Around blacks, never relax. Bears, that is.

So basically the best strategy against a black bear is to lose all of your shit and start flinging yourself at it screaming on top of your lungs like you just snorted a mountain of cocaine and physically need to punch something into space. Preferably with the most chav accent you can possibly pull off.

Sometimes I wish bears would have the personality of a small dog
How to age yourself online: Knowing what a Kodak moment is.

Small dogs in my experience are viscous fucking demons of death who attack everything. I really don't want this.
