The dilemma of what to do with Osama bin Laden's body appears to have been quickly resolved if reports that he has been buried at sea prove correct.
Burying him on land could have led to his grave becoming a centre of contention as well as raising questions about where he should be buried.
"Finding a country willing to accept the remains of the world's most wanted terrorist would have been difficult," a US official said, adding: "So the US decided to bury him at sea."
Fears about Bin Laden's burial place turning into a shrine for Islamists were probably unfounded, since the Wahhabi/Salafi tradition rejects such things. Even Saudi kings are buried in unmarked graves.
Senior US officials initially told news agencies that his body would be disposed of in accordance with Islamic tradition, which involves ritual washing, shrouding and burial within 24 hours.
Although the swift burial complies with Islamic custom and should therefore avoid causing any offence in Muslim countries, the apparent haste could lead to claims that the person killed was not really Bin Laden – though the US authorities have taken DNA samples and appear to have no doubts.
The 24-hour rule has not always been applied by the US in the past. For example, the bodies of Uday and Qusay Hussein – sons of the Iraqi dictator – were held for 11 days before being released for burial.
Burial at sea is rare in Islam, though several Muslim websites say it is permitted in certain circumstances.
One is on a long voyage where the body may decay before the ship reaches land. The other is if there is a risk of enemies digging up a land grave and exhuming or mutilating the body – a rule that could plausibly be applied in Bin Laden's case.
For sea burial, according to alislam.org, the body should be lowered into the water "in a vessel of clay or with a weight tied to its feet". The website adds: "As far as possible it should not be lowered at a point where it is eaten up immediately by the sea predators."
This isn't even common for Muslims, and we've held bodies for an extended amount of time before. We kill the most wanted man in the past 10 years, and all we can think to do is THROW THE BODY IN THE OCEAN?! There's something going on here.
Osama bin Laden's body was buried at sea according to Islamic law because no country was willing or able to take his body for burial on land, senior Defense officials said.
"When there is no land alternative, Islamic law dictates that the body be buried within 24 hours, and that was the basis," one official said. "
A second senior Defense official said there was no country willing or able to accept the body for burial, and U.S. forces "took pains to observe Muslim law."
"Today's religious rites were conducted on the deck of the USS Carl Vinson in the Arabian sea. The ceremony started at 1:10am and finished at 2:10am ET," the second official said. "Procedures for Islamic body were followed. The body was washed and placed in a white sheet. A military official read prepared remarks, which were then translated into Arabic by a native speaker. The body of Osama bin Laden was placed on a flat board, which was then tipped up, and allowed to slide into the sea."
They should've burned and tortured the body
EDIT: Wasn't that funny?
Makes sense, it's so his body can't be used as a symbol of martyrdom

Thinking about it; that's actually quite a smart idea.

Yes, but it was done within 24 hours even though we kept two other bodies for 11 DAYS before burial for examination. If the custom is pretty much described as being tolerated under the correct circumstance by Muslims, what's the need to follow it to the word if we haven't done it in the past? Why do we need to dump the body so quickly?
Plus they said that the pictures are too gruesome to show people, can people REALLY deface the body more? Not to mention that's being said like it's being kept in a local town morgue with absolutely no security. The body would have been perfectly safe from people trying to deface it.

People guilty of atrocities are generally not buried in any country, but instead their ashes or body are dumped in international waters. This is so that they never can call a country their eternal resting place.
It does make a certain amount of sense, but it's also incredibly suspicious to chuck his body in the ocean without any possible opportunity for independent verification.
It may not be pretty but this was the safest course of action I think. If the body had been held somewhere there would have been a huge risk of an attack to reclaim it. They supposedly have the evidence they needed to verify his DNA and disposing of the body was the best option. The fact that they tried to do it in a semi respectful way not just torching it shows a sensitivity not stereotypically associated with the US military.
They should've burned and tortured the body
How do you torture a dead person?
I hope fish like ugly tall guys with ridonculous beards.
I didn't know Bin Laden was a viking.
Osama bin Laden to rest.

What fucking examination, it was proven that the body was in fact Bin Laden's, what is there more to examine ?
I didn't know Bin Laden was a viking.
Anyone with that beard deserves Viking status.

They probably snapped a shitloads of pictures and took plenty of DNA samples

Again, I'm not saying it's odd that they did the sea burial. It's how quickly they got it done. His death was just announced LAST NIGHT.

you don't need a body anymore if you've collected several DNA samples
it's not suspicious at all
What fucking examination, it was proven that the body was in fact Bin Laden's, what is there more to examine ?
We knew that Uday and Qusay Hussein were in fact who we thought they were. We still kept the bodies for 11 days.
They should've burned and tortured the body
Yeh lets torture a dead body that will show him!
Again, I'm not saying it's odd that they did the sea burial. It's how quickly they got it done. His death was just announced LAST NIGHT.
Islam demands rapid burial.

When compared to how we've disposed of bodies before (again, I'm talking about Uday and Qusay) it is.
Makes me laugh all too hard thinking of angry military personnel carefully wrapping the body of Osama Bin Laden in a white sheet after cleaning him, and slowly lowering him into the ocean.
What fucking examination, it was proven that the body was in fact Bin Laden's, what is there more to examine ?
HURR YES DA GUBMENT SAID ITS HIS BODY SO WE CAN CLEARLY JUST THROW THE BODY INTO THE OCEAN AND NOT LET ANY OUTSIDE SOURCES CONFIRM ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT DEATHS OF THE DECADE DURRR
Islam demands rapid burial.
Fucking again, WE IGNORED THAT FOR OTHER BODIES, WHAT MAKES THIS ONE SO SPECIAL? BURYING HIM AT SEA ISN'T TRADITIONAL FOR MUSLIMS AND IT'S PRETTY MUCH INSULTING TO HIM, THERE'S NO NEED TO FOLLOW THE PROCEDURE TO THE WORD.
The crazy hicks probably just lobbed it off their carrier.
THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND
When you throw someone you've shot into the sea, he rises up a few years later and fucks up everyone involved

I doubt they'd be angry. They're professionals. If anything, it'd bring the satisfaction of closure, knowing that the 9/11 fallen are avenged.
That said, It is rather odd that they disposed of the body so quickly.
The crazy hicks probably just lobbed it off their carrier.
It was in the care of the US. They clearly wanted to get rid of it as quickly as they could.
Besides, everyone knows that zombies can live underwater due to not needing to breathe.

The US army, professionals?
Yeah, no. If anything we're lucky there haven't been leaked photos of them teabagging him. :v:

I wouldn't mind if they did, to be honest.
