Well, luckily for me the perhaps eeriest place in the entire world is right in my tiny home town. The old abandoned asylum in Lier, Norway. (MSNBC actually put it on the list as one of the 10 eeriest places in the world, with no particular ranking on that list) First a bit of history: Lier Asylum is a shady place that operated illegally. The craziest people in the entire Scandinavian region were transported there, some for electroshock treatments. Others for lobotomies. The government realized that they were doing this, so they shut it down in the early 80's. It's been abandoned since. Everything is still there, wheelchairs and electroshock beds. I was there, the place was terrifying, even for someone who isn't really psyched out by anything. I visited three floors; the cellar with giant ovens. Threatening and large, almost looked like cremating ovens. They heated the place. 2nd floor was where the patients stayed. Since then the walls have been littered with biblical [and satanic] quotes of grafitti and such. Then on the 3rd floor I saw an electroshock chair. The patient had tried to chew his way out of it, the whole side war nearly chewed through. Thick wood. Like this: That's from another room, but it's the same thing. I saw it on at least three of those chair/beds. (For more of those pics, see galleries below) The other floors were deemed 'unsafe' by my buddies, as the place had been neglected long enough to become moldy and... collapsible. When I went, a couple years ago, I didn't take any pictures. However many others have, so I'm posting some pictures that I haven't taken, but are from inside the place; I suggest you check out these galleries: Pictures from the inside 1 Pictures from the inside 2 Pictures from the inside 3 Pictures from the inside 4 Pictures from the outside Also, this scared the shit out of me when I was there, from the showers; On closer inspection I'm pretty sure it's just paint though. Just a couple more images, I really suggest checking the links though. The area quickly became overgrown; The inside has paint chipping off the walls;

Woah, nice. I'd probably shit my pants going in there, you get that feeling someone will pop up from the corridors.
I would kill to get into one of those.
Watch the film "Grave Encounters" then think about going there.
I would have instantly left if I had seen that blood smeared on the wall.

The Lier Asylum was from the beginning a government run and financed hospital. It was not running illegaly by that times standard but rather did what they was told by the norwegian Labour government. In a 10 year period the socialist government issued over 2500 lobotomies. Concidering the number of citizens in Norway that is a huge number. Way higher than any other western nation. They also did experimental trials for drugs, radioactivity etc on patients. The head doctor and professor responsible is today still living and his books are being used by doctors in all of scandinavia. Also there were only norwegian patients. They were not shipped from sweden, denmark etc. They had their own gruesome practices. There has been no excuse from the state of norway towards the patients/prisoners of Lier and several other psychiatric hospitals.
