The fire, first reported at 6:40 p.m. Monday, is burning in a process unit at the refinery, officials said. It is sending smoke over the cities of Richmond and San Pablo. Residents are being advised by officials with Contra Costa County Health Services to turn off heaters, air conditioners and fans, and to cover cracks around doors with tape or damp towels. Refinery spokeswoman Heather Cox told KTVU-TV that there were no injuries to report. Cox said she had no details as to what caused the fire. Television shots show large flames with thick black smoke coming out of at least two refinery stacks at the facility. The Chevron Richmond Refinery is among the country's largest and most important refineries, processing up to 240,000 barrels of crude oil a day, according to the company's website. The facility makes high-quality products that include gasoline, jet fuel, diesel fuel and lubricants, as well as chemicals used to manufacture many other useful products. It is the largest producer of base oils on the West Coast. My friend who lives in Sausalito said he could see the plume from his window.
Hopefully there aren't any explosions. These sort of things are rare in American refineries these days. They're regulated so fiercely.
There's a shelter-in-place warning for my county ATM. However, I live pretty far off so I doubt it'd effect me.

Wait, which Richmond is this? There's like thirty just in the US, and I work in one of them (don't think there's a refinery).
Well there goes the gas prices again...

Too dark outside to go look, getting pretty tired too. Here's hoping I don't suffocate in my sleep
Oh fuck this isn't good
The Emergency Alert System on TV and Radio always scares me shitless. That robot voice and deaf tone doesn't fuck around. Found a video of the actual EAS warning:
Ha I live in richmond, I thought there was just a disgusting raincloud coming my way until I smelled the smoke :(
where are the photos? I expected photos [editline]7th August 2012[/editline] I'm seeing white smoke, which means that they are extinguishing the flames

I used to live in Richmond, but I guess it's pretty lucky that I moved out. Hopefully no one gets hurt in all this.
