The National Union of Students’ LGBT Campaign has passed a motion calling for the abolition of representatives for gay men – because they “don’t face oppression” in the LGBT community.
The NUS LGBT+ Campaign discussed the issue at its annual conference, which took place in Sheffield this week.
At the event, delegates passed a motion that blames “cis gay men” for “misogyny, transphobia, racism and biphobia”
They also refuse to condemn ISIS because it would be "Islamophobic" (i.e. they're unprincipled spineless twonks). Horseshoe theory in action?
cis gay men
is this satire
I don't think I have a desk big enough to faceplant on.
The sad part is ten years from now these people are rather likely to absolutely deny they ever said or did anything this completely fucking obtuse.
is this satire
Social justice from most american sources, especially schools, has essentially become satire, yes.
This is the kind of shit that were satirized a few years ago.
They weren't trying to make us laugh, they were warning us about the future.
I suppose the important part of the motion is;
in the LGBT community.
[del]Which, compared to LBT people, yeah there's probably a lot less animosity towards gay men.[/del] (lolnope, quite quite right there) But that's still a strange fix to focus on considering the role was originally to try and get LGBT representation amongst Hetero/Cis members of NUS backed SUs.
Not that this actually changes much for students going about their daily lives at uni here, the NUS have pretty much no real power outside of their unions, and if they keep being weird the unions might break off of them soon. Most students barely pay attention to their SU unless it's about events giving them a reason to drink (I know I did!).

The NUS are a UK organisation. It helps if you know what you're talking about before you comment on it or start getting mad about the "sjws".

Can we abolish the NUS?
This is insane
Now watch someone here seriously defend it
Go fuck yourselves, NUS.

Really? In my experience they have it relatively easy compared to people who are GBT.
A friend of mine came out as gay during secondary school and ended up with bruises, while a friend who came out as lesbian just had some dumb jokes thrown at her for the first week or so

Huh, neat. I'm assuming this is amongst the general population and not limited to LGBT groups? Because the motion seems to imply they were only looking at it from within LGBT groups for some weirdly obtuse reason.
For once I'm glad my uni is not a part of NUS. The best part is most of the student deals/discounts you get are supposed to be for NUS only, but no one really gives two shits or knows enough to care so all the benefits and none of the crazy.

Many a true word is spoken in jest.
I'm all for NUS being disbanded because over the few times I have heard them in the news it's always been for stupid shit.
i suppose in the context of inter-LGBT relations there's kind of problems sometimes, like the occasional gay person that says bisexuals aren't real or they're super slutty or whatever, but how will removing perfectly fine gay representatives fix any of that?
Nah it's okay though because these people only exist on tumblr.

They didn't seem to do very much whilst I was studying tbh. Mostly heading a ban on Nestlé products and constantly proposing renovations of the one SU run cafe that didn't suck dick. Their attempts to get student marches going for various things stopped really working after the last big student loan one where that bellend threw a fire extinguisher into the crowd or something. Nobody really cared enough about anything else to march.
Ah, so these are the regressive leftists that I hear so much about.
cis is a stupid term regardless of it's use to describe "race or gender I don't like." To go a step further and starting calling gay men cis is outrageously stupid.

Cis is to trans as straight is to gay.
What's stupid about calling gay guys who aren't trans something that means not trans?
The hierarchy of oppression in action.

Cis just means not trans. That's it.
Ah yes, the best facet of intersectionality, the oppression olympics of going "YOU HAVE MORE PRIVILEGE POINTS THAN ME", "NO... I DO." Rather than dicking around with identity why not get some actual goals and get some progress done.
cis is a stupid term regardless of it's use to describe "race or gender I don't like." To go a step further and starting calling gay men cis is outrageously stupid.
It's not very different from calling somebody straight/heterosexual. Trans as a prefix means "across" in Latin, and in contrast to that, cis means "on the side of." And in the context of gender it relates to how you relate to your assigned sex at birth. These two terms have nothing to do with sexuality, so it's perfectly fine to call gay men cisgendered.

Gay men are cis because they identify themselves as men. Cis means "On this side of", in this case gender. Trans is the antonym of cis.
Of course, sometimes is not about the word but the way you say/use it.
What's the University that's basically a full nightmare from Tumblr? The one that's always in the news for being absolutely retarded? This sounds like it would take place there.

no, you can be a gay trans man
cis means you are the gender assigned to you at birth
[editline]22nd March 2016[/editline]
and I of course mean within the context of gender
Oh look yet another "no I have it worse" pissing match

I'm aware, that doesn't change my point at all, hence the use of the word most. Might try planting your flag on stable ground.

My understanding of the world cis is that it stands for "comfortable in skin" in that context I would say you could argue it doesn't fully apply to someone who is gay.
Regardless I fully believe we're beyond the point of way you say use it and believe it really is just a derogatory term.

Except that's a backronym because it's actually derived from the Latin.
Cisgender has its origin in the Latin-derived prefix cis-, meaning "on this side of", which is an antonym for the Latin-derived prefix trans-, meaning "across from" or "on the other side of". This usage can be seen in the cis–trans distinction in chemistry, the cis–trans or complementation test in genetics, in Ciscaucasia (from the Russian perspective) and in the ancient Roman term Cisalpine Gaul (i.e., "Gaul on this side of the Alps"). In the case of gender, cis- is used to refer to the alignment of gender identity with assigned sex.
my revenge against the_killer24 proceeds smoothly [sp]<33[/sp]
that's 100% a backronym, cis has a long, long history of meaning the opposite of trans (cisalpins,
cis and trans fats, etc)

GOd FUCK that's twice now elix I'll remember this
[editline]22nd March 2016[/editline]
how doesn't that fully apply to someone who is gay anyway? most gay people are perfectly comfortable with the idea of being a man
