Like, all the facts in this video I heard in this Beta 64 video yesterday, which in turn was taken from the tcrf. Just thought it was funny how much deja vu I got watching this.
I like how, at around 1:10, Jon says "the team also didn't want to include elements that only existed to show off new hardware. If a new element was impressive, but somehow interfered with the flow of gameplay, then it shouldn't be included." Obviously the team working on Super Mario World isn't representative of all of Nintendo's beliefs in game design, but they kinda had it right, considering how nowadays some of the other teams try forcing in gameplay elements that are only there to show case what the console/controller is capable of as opposed to designing the controls to be intuitive and fun.

I notice that while they tried to hammer some gimmicks in early in their life cycles, both systems got flagged with an extraordinarily controversial game at the end of their lifespans, and naturally, both of them relied on motion gimmicks out the ass due to trying to experiment with no real alternative options for player choice; Skyward Sword (albeit unless you had an old Wiimote with MotionPlus attached like I do, the controls shouldn't be a problem usually) and Star Fox Zero, where almost no one openly praised the decision to take away the 3rd person crosshair and mess with the TV camera for boss fights while pretty much forcing all of the aiming onto the Gamepad.
It had also one of the best soundtracks I've heard in a Nintendo game. Such catchy melodies.
God I loved this game... I never had an SNES but the GBA port was one of the first gameboy games I ever got, and I swear I found every secret exit and beat every level. I should go back and see if I have all the dragon coins on my save file someday..
Super Mario World was the first videogame I ever played, so it holds a very special place in my heart. I never heard of some of those beta elements so this video left me pleasantly surprised.

I liked SMW on GBA, except for the brighter graphics and mario speaking.
Still holds up as one of the top Mario games for me, besides Mario Kart / Party.
