What's a car like the Isuzu rodeo or the Isuzu amigo. That has good MPG? Auto Or manual. Doesn't matter. Pretty much a small type suburban. $5000 And under
Kia Sportage, an earlier model with a 5spd or auto. They have inline 6's or 4bangers. They also had an option earlier on to have a removable top. I found several 2003-2005's in used car dealerships under 100k miles for less than $5,000.

Not going to get a small SUV and good mileage. :/ There just isn't anything out there that is capable as an SUV and gets good mileage. [editline]27th October 2012[/editline] Well, you can get a Samurai or Sidekick but those are tiny. Amazing MPG for 4WD though.
Pathfinder?
Terrible mileage, may as well go with a V8 4WD rather than a Pathfinder. At least then you'd have some power.

Or you could try a hyundai tiburon. Both would be 4runner size. Also, a little more expensive would be a 2nd generation CR-v. 2002-2004, or a 2.5 gen - 2004-2006. They have a 4 cylinder, 2.4 litre motor, but are not capable offroad. Great for camping though. The seats all fold into a bed and there's a picnic table in the trunk. I bought my 2002 for about $3,600 with 106,000 miles on it. I got about 25mpg with that car. I also towed a 2500lb trailer about 5 miles with it with no issues.

The 1st gen has a B20B1 which is just a B18B1 Integra LS motor with different manifolds and a bigger bore. I would think the 1st gens should get better mileage than the 2nd gens as the CR-V transmission has taller gears than an Integra and you can get like 28 city 34ish highway. The 2nd gen's have that K24 though, it has something like at least 50 more hp and tq though. The CR-V will pretty much cover any traction issues/off roading which average people would ever do. You're not gonna do rock crawling but with a decent set of all terrain tires I can't see it not getting anywhere you really should be.

It was a 2.4l motor similar to the Element, and MDX I think. It towed real well, but it had some clearance issues with the ground. There's a cage around the gas tank to protect it, but you shouldn't really drive it off the street too much. Mine had a k24a1.
