A rape victim will receive a £20,000 out-of-court settlement after a police force apologised for failing to investigate her complaint properly and arresting her. The woman, who was 17 at the time of the rape in 2012, tried to kill herself after she was told she could face charges for lying about the attack. Her rapist was convicted and jailed for five years in 2013. Hampshire Constabulary said it was "sorry for how we let her down". The woman's lawyer Debaleena Dasgupta told the BBC she had been able to seek justice only because of the Human Rights Act, and said her client was concerned about plans to repeal it. Laura, which is not her real name, was at a house with friends after a night out when she was raped by a man who was part of the group. Laura reported the rape to police in Winchester, but her mother - "Jackie" - told the BBC the officers who responded "weren't very sympathetic". Laura told officers she believed there was forensic evidence on her T-shirt, which implicated her attacker. The police did not carry out a full test and failed to find any evidence, Jackie said. Police later arrested Laura on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. Four months after her arrest, detectives visited Laura to tell her they believed her story. The Crown Prosecution Service had asked for the T-shirt to be thoroughly tested and the rapist was charged.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-32827731
That's not a lot considering the emotional damage it did, I mean, she tried to kill herself, is her life only worth 20K ?

You guys spend too much time reading all the american news, no million dollar settlements, and no long prison sentences in West and Nordic Europe.
what the fuck five years? should be more imo
Why? Five years is a long time. It's the baseline for murder here in Denmark.
Why? Five years is a long time. It's the baseline for murder here in Denmark.
People are used to 'life sentence' being the norm because of the American three-strikes rule. They don't seem to realise quite how long 5 years in prison is.
They don't seem to realise quite how long 5 years in prison is.
I'm sorry but I don't feel remorse or pity for rapists when it comes to their sentencing. 5 years is chump change for what they should be getting. It should be, at the very least, 30 years.
Why? Five years is a long time. It's the baseline for murder here in Denmark.
I mean theres only like 27 people in Denmark right? Everyone knows each other.

If we want it to be a horrible punishment, we can pull out each of their toenails and fingernails and feed it to them, and then cut their arms off and bash them about the face with them, but that doesn't actually accomplish anything. In this specific case, I'm quite surprised that it was only 5 years, as longer sentences for rape aren't uncommon in the UK, but if they think the rapist shows sufficient remorse that they'll be rehabilitated within 5 years, I see no reason to keep them in there longer and continue to use taxpayer money for an unnecessary purpose.
God damn, turns out the police in my town are shit

Unlike in US, in EU prisons are mostly humane.
it's like nothing ever gets done right when rape cases are reported in the media either it's a witch hunt with the presumed suspect being guilty before proven innocent or it's someone who is being accused under dubious circumstances e.g. the mattress girl case or like in this case, the police have absolutely failed to appropriately deal with the case and the survivor has just been given chump change the consistency when it comes to dealing with serious crimes like rape is pretty shocking in some places

Don't make it out to seem like rape crimes are special, oh no, the incompetence is there for a lot of crimes.
To keep him away from any more innocents he might hurt.
What makes him safe to release after 30 years? Even if we go by "an eye for an eye" sort of justice, 30 years of being locked up is obviously incredibly damaging to the person. If you think that would be a just punishment you should probably see a doctor.
I would rather a rapist's life be ruined over an innocent victims.
Okay, now both lives are ruined. Nice job. I'd rather increase the likelihood of the offender becoming a productive member of society at some point, but obviously it's a better idea to waste life and money by putting him in prison for his whole life. Again, you didn't answer why he shouldn't just be in prison forever by your logic. Or why not the death penalty as well for good measure?
what the fuck five years? should be more imo
Life in prison. [editline]22nd May 2015[/editline]
Rape is terrible, but honestly that's just insane. e: fuck didn't refresh the page
Life in prison =/= execution.
Murder should also be life in prison
You people baffle me, the aim of the law is not only to punish people for what they have done but to correct them. What good would come from somebody who felt betrayed from the justice systems even if guilty? What good will come from giving him, let's say 40 years? Would that make him a better person? No, it won't, it will also be a burden on the state and that means in your own pocket. Beside, punishment alone has been shown time and time again to not work, you have to correct the behaviour.
I'm sorry but I don't feel remorse or pity for rapists when it comes to their sentencing. 5 years is chump change for what they should be getting. It should be, at the very least, 30 years.
But 5 years in prison is already a pretty strong deterrent, adding more years to that just makes him more difficult to reintegrate into society. imo sentences should be like 5-10 years at the most, or life if the person is just too dangerous to ever be released. I don't really get the point of anything in between.
It shocks me more that officers involved in this were allowed to leave the force rather than actually having to deal with the consequences of their actions.
