On April 17, New Jersey Senator Frank Lautenberg issued a statement to the public that he intends to propose a bill or amendment to regulate black powder, and other forms of explosive components, in the wake of the Boston Marathon Massacre. The bill would demand full Federal background checks of anyone seeking to purchase the minor explosive, similar to recent attempts by Congress to require full background checks on the sale of firearms.
In the wake of the deadly bombing attacks in Boston, U.S. Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) today announced that he will reintroduce legislation he has proposed in a prior Congress to require that sales of explosive powder be subject to a background check. He will also file the legislation as an amendment to the gun violence prevention bill currently on the Senate floor. - Lautenberg.Senate.com
Early indications by analysts and observers of the horrific Boston Marathon bombings show that a black powder explosive may have been the primary element in the bombs that killed three people, and injured hundreds of others. The use of black powder explosives are considered small in potency when compared to today's high tech explosives, and their use has been found to date as far back as 220 BC.
Well.
Would you look at the time.

OK kids line right up for a background check.
Eh. It's black powder. A little regulation in the form of background checks on people wanting to buy explosives isn't so awful. If they're to be used for business, any representative of the business can acquire them, after all.
And they're not protected by the second amendment anyway. They're not arms, they're a chemical compound.
Do you have to include that crappy /k/ thread? I was retarded

It's a component required to use them. It pretty much covers it.
It seems like we always have scumbag politicians trying to push their agendas in wake of tragedies.
would this include background checks on the buying of fireworks that include black powder? if so, it can't pass because people don't want their independence day made any more difficult. if not, easy loophole to exploit to obtain explosives.
Oh boohoo. Are you people ever happy? Are you ever happy to just be able to have guns? Jesus Christ some people sicken me.
I believe that taggants should be mandatory but shit like this is kind of stupid.

you can make a bomb with black pepper.

Gunpowder, ironically, aren't used in firearms any longer (excepting old style flintlocks).

The proposed bill doesn't restrict the sale of ammunition. And I was under the impression that modern bullets used a different propellant anyway.
Black powder isn't arms in the same way that an oak branch isn't arms, even if it can be made into a rifle stock.

If you don't stick up for your rights then you might as well just let the government take them away. Sure, black powder make be trivial, but what next? Do they go after the guns that shoot them? What about fireworks?
It's a never ending battle.
This is a pretty fucking stupid idea. Besides, isn't Pyrodex more commonly used in reproduction/antique firearms as opposed to true black powder?
Does the bill say anything about taxing/limiting ammunition?

If we censor snuff films or child porngraphy, we could very well end up banning every piece of media until thinking is deemed illegal. Whats worse, is that the state will have the resources and time to scan the minds of everybody constantly, and if we censored this single film here, there is absolutely nothing we can do to prevent the state preventing you from thinking. This is of no concern however, for you have already done their job for them.
This is silly, we don't even know for certain what the bombs exactly were.

The thread isn't complete without sobotnik comparing legal firearm owners to child pornography enthusiasts or something of the like.
-on second thought, snip-

Uhh, no.
People who shoot cowboy action shoots need blackpowder.
People who choose to hunt with muzzle loaders (the hunting season starts earlier for them) need blackpowder
Anyone who owns a firearm made before, or chambered in a cartridge made before the 1890s need blackpowder.
It's still very very common

I had difficulty thinking of something that everybody would more or less universally agree on banning.

You can literally make black powder from urine+manure and wood.
Regulating black powder would have the same effect as regulating lead bullets, people would just cast their own.
Anything more than background checks wouldn't make sense.

I hate it when politicians react to things that happen in the real world!
Clearly it is part of a political agenda, and not at all trying to (in a misguided or not misguided way) keep the problem in question from reoccurring!/
Accusing politicians of having political agendas, that they wait for excuses to pass their bills, is like accusing Obama of dancing on the victims of the Newton massacre, or something dumb like that. You can call them wrong, and I would agree that many Democrats are wrong about Gun Control measures, but implying that they are malicious in their attempts to stem what they see as the cause of the problems is saying that politicians should never react to events by pushing bills perceived as possible solutions to those events.
how would a background check have stopped the boston bombing I dont get it.
"poop cant get my black powder, guess I'm not gonna blow people up, shucks".
Just more Emotion over Logic legislation. It'll be shot down anyway so who cares.

Guess I just have to go with much easier to get modern smokeless powder! Not like it's more powerful or anything! Oh wait

Not to mention black powder is already like the fucking Carlos Mencia of bomb-making ingredients
The entire reason black powder is still used in a lot of older firearms is because of it's rather low explosive density and velocity, there's far worse (and easily obtained) industrial explosives that can produce much larger and higher pressure blasts.
Yeah
Might as well regulate acetone and hydrogen peroxide too as that makes an even more powerful (albeit fucking unstable) explosive
Oh lets not forget to limit resorcinol glue so noone makes lead styphnate
Lets not also forget to regulate hexamine fuel so noone decides to make RDX
I just want this shit over with, I actually love my firearms I'd even say a little more then most. People really need to look over their gun fetish and start worrying about shit that truly matters. If I ever had a shot at running the country I wouldn't put this stupid as fuck issue at the top.

What pisses me off more is the fact this is even posted here. People need to stop fucking leaking over from that looney bin.

I laughed WAY harder than I should have
Completely true though, its such a low velocity explosive that its really not all that good as a bomb making ingredient. In fact actual gunpowder isnt really useful for much of anything anymore (other than like, blowing up stumps and running through certain muzzle-loading guns)

It's an effective, yet callous strategy. Most people can't think correctly while addled with fear.
