Sony’s PlayStation Network may not be free of subscription fees much longer, according to oblique remarks by its CTO.
SCE’s Chief Technical Officer Masayuki Chatani has this to say about Sony’s PSN plans in a recent interview, where he also explains how the slimlined PS3 and failed PSP Go were intended to appeal more to non-gamers:
Maintaining service will mean continuing cost. This is a major issue for a home electronics manufacturer, isn’t it?
Servers and the like have running costs, and we would face difficulties if our business depended solely on the sell-and-forget model. After we sell the hardware, though, we continue to sell products such as content and services.
We expect to see considerable growth in digital content, such as game download services, avatar items and the like.
We can also accept payment in a growing number of ways. In addition to single-payment packaged software, there are also schemes like monthly fees or per-item charges. I think this variety of payment methods will bring about a diverse range of playing methods, too.
Presumably making the entire PSN service require paid subscriptions, as with Xbox Live, would be a last resort, but it certainly sounds as though free access to online gaming services may in part give way at some point to a subscription based model…
The "?" mark in the Title represents the possibility of fees happening.
Hey that's shitty if you own a ps3, but I'm not surprised.
If they charged for online playing then there's really no point in keeping either my xbox or ps3 anymore.
Well that was the only thing that would have made me get a PS3 over a 360. Now I'm not getting either. PC all the way.
I'm happy I don't own one...
But I sorta want one because of some exclusive titles...
Well thats shit. Good thing I sold my PS3 a few months ago.
Presumably making the entire PSN service require paid subscriptions, as with Xbox Live, would be a last resort.
Not going to happen.
Sony takes to much pride in their free-online services.

See for your self.
That's also the same reason why I wanted to buy one awhile back, other than that I wasn't really looking forward to any exclusives.
Well, how is the free service? Does it compare to Live? If not, maybe this is a good thing.

Come on, Live is $5 a month and it's a solid service.

It would be without the 6 year old kids, and the wannabe gangsters.
This is the News board not the Rumours board

That's $5 on top of internet price, phone bills, food costs, water, electricity.
Plus Microsoft already make enough money from all their other products and they surely make enough on 360s to be able to run some servers.

It's actually 7 dollars and the thing with me is that I really don't play a lot of mutliplayer whatsoever. But there are those special games that I do like to play online, but even then I really don't play often. I only play multiplayer when I'm in the mood. And it's probably 2 times out of a week. So it's just really a waste for me to ever buy online services for my xbox live. I don't like having to force myself to play when I really don't feel like it.
I know you think I'm full of shit but that's the honest truth.
I got a PS3 just so I can pick up and play when I feel like it and not have to worry about my subscription service ever running out AND for the exclusives. Hell, even for games that are cross platform I buy it for the PS3 now. So at this point the xbox is actually more meaningless to me these days. I know I know I'm seeming like a jackass but that's just how I am. The online service on my ps3 is perfect, never had any issues, and there is in fact a large community.
I'm really not much of a gamer as I use to be back then. Moral of this post is that I don't want to waste money on subscriptions to online service when I hardly use it. Even if it is 50 dollars a month, 15 bucks more and I get myself a new game for my ps3 and I can play online when I feel like it.

Really?
59 Dollars a Year?
Don't do this, Sony. It's what I hate so much about the 360
Really?
59 Dollars a Year?
For me it's a waste of money.
Rumours..
The current features on psn like online gaming are still going to be free.
They'll only charge for movies and shit. I think.
:smithicide:
That's bullshit.
For me it's a waste of money.
It's 59 dollars over 12 months, christ.
It's 59 dollars over 12 months, christ.
So? Would you pay that much if Facepunch required a subscription?
They aren't going to charge. It's just a rumor. What the fee will be will be like an exclusive membership that is something similar to Qore, which will give subscribers stuff like early access to demos and whatnot. Playing online will still be free.

Source here.
$60 a year is a game every year
You'll have that much less to be able to buy with
I have always backed up Sony and it's decisions with the PS3, simply because they were improvements. But this is god damn ridiculous, I'll cancel my subscription the moment this goes live, if it does.
I know Sony loses money the PS3, but I already spend $600 on what most people today spend $300 on.
Is Sony's financial sector just fucking retarded or what?
In the case that Sony REALLY DOES fuck PSN up that much by charging for its services, it better fucking update daily and have more content and media.
One of the reasons I've always wanted a PS3 is because of free online, but if this happens...

I still don't see your point, I pay all those things, as well as for a car, car maintenance, gas, and insurance, and I can still afford Live.
[editline]07:36AM[/editline]
Why is everyone complaining about the price? It's $7 a month apparently, not 5, but still.. if you have even a part-time job, that's like an hour of work. You could go downtown and beg seven dollars out of people in half an hour or fish it out of a fountain in a mall if you're that desperate.
if they start chargin, im going to blow my brains out kurt cobain style.
Man if a company starts making money off of the work and effort they put into providing a service for the public, I'm gonna shoot up a school and detonate my dynamite vest. :(
Judging by how Xbaw(www)x fanboys say that paying for a service is lot better than having it for free, this might not be a bad thing.
It would be without the 6 year old kids, and the wannabe gangsters.
You get that with ANY online game service. Especially Steam.
Besides for the price of a game, you can a full year subscription. Just renew every year.
