Portland became the first city on the East Coast to legalize marijuana as voters overwhelmingly passed an ordinance Tuesday allowing adults to possess small amounts of the drug.
If it isn't fully legalised in America in the next five years i'll be very suprised.
Then hopefully Britain's proud tradition of copying America will mean it's legalised over here, I'd love to open up a dispensary.
I'm against the use of drugs myself, but then again I'm against tobacco and especially alcohol, and I don't see how weed can be much worse than either one of the two, yet weed is banned and these are legal.
It'll still get in the hands of teenagers anyway but its a step in the right direction

Have you actually heard what any of the politicians have said about it man? I'd be surprised if it's legalised within my lifetime.

Plenty of them are still against it. Its going to take decades of people dying off to fix this.
The laws themselves cause pretty much all the related trouble. Even worse is the propaganda against drugs as it leaves people without any real knowledge at all. The illegal nature of drugs makes it even more attractive.
Teenagers should be thought the positive, neutral, negative, long-term & short-term effects of all the common drugs. Knowing shit makes people drugsmart, instead of becoming addicts.

If you want to know anything about a drug. Always go to erowid, everything else is mostly bullshit financed by the pharmacutical industrial complex, tabacco & alcohol industry.
Huh. So that's why my chemical thermodynamics lecture was half empty this morning.

If it does get legalized over here, I'd probably try it at least once.
Also, the OPs avatar is very fitting indeed.
A group of five young voters said they voted solely on the marijuana question. As they left the polls, one of them shouted, “Let’s go smoke a blunt.”

ok that one time in college is not enough to judge something millions (billions?) of people can enjoy if they don't do it in excess

I see you haven't encountered college students before...

Uh I have. For 4 years buddy. Still doesn't make it any less obnoxious. It's no wonder why there are still people who want it illegal because of shit like that.

Oh no some kids mentioned pot OUT LOUD.
So obnoxious wow such disregard for public order its like they don't understand that there are people who get annoyed at the very mention of cannabis such insensitivity.

it's quickly becoming unfeasible to continue a crusade against marijuana. public opinion has made drastic shifts in the last decade. pretty soon politicians are going to have to cut their losses, legalize marijuana, and devote more resources to pursuing "harder" drugs.
[editline]6th November 2013[/editline]
there is no other option because it is impossible to enforce a law that a vast majority of people are actively in opposition to.

I choose to take what you said at face value and not question it.

I understand how you feel, the only reason people seem to get annoyed with people talking about pot is because it's pot, if it's football or videogames they don't care, and I think what Mr._N was calling obnoxious was that they only voted on that one issue, which is also understandable.
what about Portland, Oregon?!?

You have to look at it from the perspective of a voter who is undecided on this issue. When they read that bit in the article, all they're going to think of is loud 420 stoners who only went to vote because of that sole issue. It doesn't help supporters of legalization who want to take this issue seriously.

No thanks, my childhood was shitty enough thanks to that substance.

I overdosed on gay once.

I do agree they were rather obnoxious, the problem is that people actually consider obnoxious teenagers and young adults a factor in the legalization of cannabis. If that's their sole reasoning for keeping it illegal then I apologize, but they probably shouldn't be voting because they're babies.
Also, if that's the only issue that they had an opinion on, its well within their rights to only vote on that. I have ignored issues that I simply do not have opinions on either way before, though I've never gone to a ballot just to vote on one issue. If you have an opinion on an issue, your opinion as a citizen of this country is just as valid as anyone else's regardless of whether you have opinions on all the issues currently at hand or just one.

Thank fucking god.
Weed being illegal is so ass backwards it blows my mind.
Its easily one of the safest recreational drugs in the world, you cant even OD on it, and hardly addictive(its psychological addiction only as well so its really your will power) It gives a great feeling, its like you are 100% in control but in a weird state(unless you get really fucking high) has been shown to medically help AIDs patients, cancer patients, anorexia, and other very difficult to treat illnesses. It doesnt give you some hangover, you just get burnt out which is just being tired essentially, the most it does is short term memory loss, feeling tired/bored, and in rarer side effects, give paranoia, disassociation, depression, and anxiety, but ALL SHORT TERM and extremely mild, honestly the paranoia/anexity is more when you are high than when you arent.
The best part about weed is their are so many ways to enjoy it, you can avoid smoking ENTIRELY with edibles/vaporizers, so now at most you are gonna get a cavity from eating pot brownies and maybe fat. The best part about edibles is, it doesnt make it taste any different, at most you can taste a tiny hint of weed but its not even gross. And honestly, if I was forced into a choice of getting into a car with someone piss drunk or someone incredibly high, I would feel 10000x safer with the high person driving.
Compare that to alcohol, enough Alcohol will kill you, its actually not that hard to die or get sent to the hospital, it can be extremely addicting with horrible withdrawls, can fuck your judgement up pretty bad, you can get out of control drunk pretty quick if you arent careful. I love alcohol, being drunk is great, IN MODERATION.
Tobacco just blows my mind, I was addicted for years, its awful, I quit and its been awhile and dont plan on going back since I sort of finally had an important realization that I felt extremely disgusting and I knew others felt the same when I was around them, I personally didnt like that feeling. But even to this day I have cravings, its awful, I started like 5 years ago, and I STILL get cravings. They are so god damn addicting and horrible for you. I still enjoy Hookah but thats a rare occasion with my friends.
The funniest thing is, weed helped me quit cigarettes entirely. I bought a few bags, smoked them, lost all the addiction and cravings(im talking about the bad ones right after you quit) so weed helped me get over the hump.
Then I quit weed on the spot and I havent smoked since summer, the first few days after quitting weed are best described as, I was bored. Thats it, and it went away. Unlike cigs which when I tried quitting before over the years made me feel awful and angry and I couldnt stop thinking about cigs.
So why the fuck is weed illegal after all that? I have never heard anyone come up with ANY legit arguments or points as too why weed should be illegal that made me think that maybe they had a good point.

Welcome to American politics.
portland is maine's largest city so hopefully the rest of the state will follow
I kinda have a reason to move to Portland now. It's literally about an hour-long drive away from me. I'm sick and tired of these brute, overbearing 'war on drugs' politics.
what about Portland, Oregon?!?
I'm pretty sure it's been legal(?), or they could go a few miles into Vancouver, where it is legal.
