Now this is really shocking. It appears that id Software has trouble porting Doom 3: BFG with 60fps on Sony’s platform and that was revealed by guru John Carmack himself. When a fan asked whether id Software would include some new graphical effects to the PS3 version (like DoF), Carmack said that getting Doom 3 BFG to 60fps on the PS3 is more challenging than most of us would think. Carmack blaimed stencil shadows for it as they are ‘raster pigs’. And obviously, Doom 3 BFG will not include any new graphical features. PS3 gamers, there is no reason to worry though as we bet that Carmack will find a way to overcome those issues.
PC gamers, on the other hand, will be able to use all those great looking mods (like Sikkmod 1.2) with the BFG Edition of Doom 3. When asked whether id Software was interested in offering a graphical overhaul for the PC, Carmack did not comment.
Tim Willits, on the other hand, unveiled some new information about the new content of the Doom 3 BFG Edition. In an interview with TheVerge, Willits said that Doom 3 “Lost Mission” will put players in the boots of the Bravo Team. In case you are unaware of, Bravo Team was the company of space marines that were originally sent to save the scientists in Doom 3.
As Willits said:
“The Lost Mission begins with one of the Bravo Team members waking up in a Wraith kill room, and having to help a group of scientists shut down a teleporter to Earth, before the demons invade and ruin everything.”
The Lost Mission will take place in the same timeframe with Doom 3′s story, and will help fill in some of the game’s gaps.
Doom 3 BFG is currently planned for an Autumn release on PC, PS3 and X360!

Reminds me of how the Silent Hill HD Collection managed to have occasional framerate lag and horrible sound tearing, despite the source games being able to work fine on a PS2.
Although it kind of worked out for the better in some ways. If you tried to play cheery music via console to avoid being frightened, your tunes would often slow down and distort all staticy-satanic-like when things got intense. That's a special kind of terror I'd want intentionally coded into my horror games.

didn't the silent hill hd collection get rid of a lot of the fog which made the game look like ass?
So all it is is Doom 3 re-released with a new mission? I'd expect some graphical updates to make it worth it, at least, and the way they're talking about it it seems like some graphical updates would be easier than just straight porting it.
I hope this is leading up to some news on Doom 4, too, because this release just sounds lame.

I'm pretty sure money and getting the Doom 4 hype train rolling were the only reason they decided to do this. The new version includes a Half-life style flashlight system though.

Meh, fuck that I liked the old flashlight system.
The new mission does sound pretty sweet though. I dunno, I'll probably end up giving it a try just for that.

you and 3 other people on earth
I tried playing Doom 3 a few weeks ago, on the vanilla version, the age shows, you can see the polygons and textures are blurry, I appreciate the new flashlight though, darkness was way overused.
Who the fuck wants to play Doom 3 on PS3?
I don't get it.
I'm reminded of The Orange Box on the PS3 but that was more the fault of it being ported by EA.

The idea is to introduce people to the Doom series in preparation for Doom 4. I wouldn't be surprised to see a whole bunch of 12 year old COD kids going around talking about this new game called Doom 3 and how "scary" it is.

The flashlight system was awesome, plus it was an almost effective melee weapon. (lol gibs)
id deserves any problems they get. Rage was shit and now they're primarily console developers.

I'm not defending EA by any means, but you have to keep in mind that PS3 is the hardest console to code for. Most games that are multi-platform almost always have issues from the start. Skyrim probably being the most famous of them all.

LOL NO REFLEX SIGHTS IN 2145 WORST GAME EVER LOL BACK TO OWNING NOOBS IN COD!!!!!1111!
I don't see what you're seeing.

Nah, they'll just walk into Gamestop and complain about how bad the graphics are. I'm not looking forward to it.

uh how often do you hang around 12 year old kids you creep
anyway, i would love for John Carmack to write a giant essay on why he has problems with the PS3, even though i understand about 10% of it it's still fascinating:

show a bit of respect, you'd still be playing on consoles if it wasn't for id.

It added tension and atmosphere. Shoulder mounted/gun mounted flashlights with endless batteries are boring, and I felt that this was pretty original for the time.
Though it still probably would have been much better if the game wasn't so stupidly dark.

It was original for sure, but c'mon, we've inhabited Mars, but we can't get guns/armor with mounted flashlights?

This is hilarious
The CoD generation is really annoying.
It was original for sure, but c'mon, we've inhabited Mars, but we can't get guns/armor with mounted flashlights?
And we also can't build Mars bases that aren't completely fucking nonsensical in the way they're laid out.
You really have to suspend some of your disbelief for a game like Doom 3.
id deserves any problems they get. Rage was shit and now they're primarily console developers.
rage was p fun if you didn't take it too seriously, the only issues were hardware issues and they were because of a lack of vendor cooperation to push out drivers to accommodate Carmack's gamble with the megatextures tech. they made ONE "shitty" game after being bought out and now apparently that invalidates the fact that they've been paving the way for PC gaming since day 1? get over yourself

So yeah, you need to suspend more than just 'some' of your disbelief for Doom 3.
Wait, there's people who actually try to make sense of Doom?

i know right usually id software games are the pinnacle of believable realism
I was going to buy Doom 3 off the Steam store. Then I heard this was coming out. Then I heard it was console only so I was going to buy the old version on Steam as originally planned. Then I find out it's releasing on PC as well and will work with all mods? I might as well wait for it to release, download the mods and enjoy the game with the high quality textures it was supposed to have with the extra campaign it could have had originally. Sounds like a plan.
i know right usually id software games are the pinnacle of believable realism
Yep, just like Rage.
To be fair the PS3 is an exceptionally bad fit for a Doom 3-style engine.
They aren't doing jack shit with the textures. I've seen the screenshots they put out and shits still blurry as ever.
Wulfen's texture pack for Doom 3 is probably as close as you'll ever get to a Doom 3 with 2007 graphics.
http://www.doom3world.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=24708
There are only 2 texture packs on this level of quality that I know of and the thing with these packs though is that they're incomplete and only affect a really small amount of textures.
(No, it's unlikely that someone will ever go back through EVERY texture used in Doom 3 and make them equal or better looking)
His textures are absolutely amazing. Though I never use them because it's weird seeing the game half in extreme detail, and half in a blur.
