The subjects of the first two emails was “African American Student Diversity” and the third read “Jewish Student Diversity.” The first two emails read: “Hi n*****s, I just wanted to say that I plan to kill all of you. White power! The KKK has returned!!! Heil Trump!!!!” The third reads: “Hi you fucking filthy jews, I just wanted to say the SS will rise again and kill all of your filthy souls. Die in a pit of eternal fire! Sincerely, Dr. Alex Halderman.” The emails were sent by three separate University uniqnames — all of which are administrators of the listservs, potentially indicative the listservs via the University’s online contact server, MCommunity, may have been hacked.
here's the email sent to all of us in response:
Fellow Wolverines, We are deeply disturbed by the overtly racist, anti-Black, and anti-Semitic emails that have been sent to members of our University of Michigan community. They are reprehensible and have no place on this campus. To our Black and Jewish friends, classmates, and peers: you matter, and you belong here. Let us acknowledge two certainties. One, every student who comes to the University of Michigan deserves the chance to thrive and find a home -- to feel safe and secure, respected and valued. Two, an offense against any member of this University is an offense against all. Even if you are not a member of a targeted group, it is still your place, today and everyday, to stand against injustice and fight discrimination. We will work our very hardest to push for meaningful, tangible, and immediate action. As students of this University, you are entitled to this right. Below you will find a list of what our Administration has done in response to these recent incidents of hate and intolerance. In the coming days and weeks, as more action is taken, this list will continue to grow. In Solidarity, David Schafer and Micah Griggs, CSG President and Vice President
https://www.michigandaily.com/section/crime/racist-emails-sent-university-engineering-computer-science-students
Sounds like total baloney. At most a troll that managed to guess the admin passwords.
Sounds like total baloney. At most a troll that managed to guess the admin passwords.
i'm too stupid to understand all the mumbo jumbo but they somehow spoofed the emails (???)
i'm too stupid to understand all the mumbo jumbo but they somehow spoofed the emails (???)
Staff accounts probably had a default password like routers do or they guessed it.
Staff accounts probably had a default password like routers do or they guessed it.
Well it says it looks like it's some kind of spoofing.
“The uniqname is probably being faked to a moderator/owner on the group so the email will bypass moderation,” one comment reads. “The name is being set to the victim's name along with reply-to field so he receives the complaint." Engineering junior Noah Martin-Ruben wrote in an email interview he would not speculate the named senders are at fault. “It looks like the person sending the emails is trying to anonymize themselves by using a fake, somewhat untraceable email,” Martin-Ruben wrote. On the same Facebook page, it was speculated that the emails did not come from the senders they appeared to. Instead, posters believed the messages were routed from a fake emkei.cz email.
But yeah, the emails scream "Hello fellow white supremacists"

Actions taken regarding report of urination in UGLI reflection room Over the weekend, DPSS reported that a man was seen/heard urinating in a reflection room at the Shapiro Undergraduate Library. These rooms are most often used for prayer by our Muslim students, although they are open to all students. A number of steps have now been taken. Wednesday: Statement from Robert Sellers, the University of Michigan's chief diversity officer and vice provost for equity and inclusion http://publicaffairs.vpcomm.umich.edu/statement-regarding-library-reflection-room-incident/
Here's the rest of the email because I didn't want to make the op too long. I'm not sure why they rallied at the president's house at 1am, and these emails obviously read like someone's just trying to create shock so it seems like there are parts of it blown way out of proportion.
Hi you fucking filthy jews, I just wanted to say the SS will rise again and kill all of your filthy souls. Die in a pit of eternal fire!
This sounds like what someone would think a white supremacist would say. Like an old person trying to be hip by saying yo.
But yeah, the emails scream "Hello fellow white supremacists"
Nah, just a troll.
Hey guys! SS here
"Heil Trump" oh it's def srs guise
I'm more disappointed that an Engineering School's cyber security was that poor. Likely a default password like everyone said. Its a total embarrassment to the IT department if it even exists.
Whoever did this is probably going to see jail time, lol. It's easy to go "oh these are just trolls being trolls" but when we've seen school and college shootings preceded in the past by messages like these, it pays to take them seriously.
I'm more disappointed that an Engineering School's cyber security was that poor. Likely a default password like everyone said. Couple of my friends who go there have been really livid about this. It was getting shared a lot on Facebook. Hopefully they catch whoever did it just to give some peace of mind .
"Heil Trump" oh it's def srs guise
I don't think this is a valid point against the credibility of these emails. Richard Spencer's rallies have plenty of "Heil Trump". It isn't like white supremacists don't actually say it.
it seems like edgy teens doing what edgy teens have done for years, but now with "trump" slapped onto it, is the closest we have to white supremacy. honestly i think we're living in a pretty good time considering what white supremacy used to mean.
They probably just faked the sending address without actually getting in the servers
If their email servers don't have even the most basic of validation in place to prevent this, that is still disappointing. Even AOL and yahoo don't allow that anymore.
Yeah it's either some weedy script kiddie troll or worst case scenario a false flag by a member of those two groups. It's just too edgy and not ideological enough to be believable.
For the safety of the university, however, I think they'll be temporarily upping the security. Not just to protect those who were targeted with the emails, but also to moniter the grounds of the school. With emails like these, I'm certain there will be an increase in hostility among others, as in coming from both sides.
Guys guys it's just a troll Like that makes it somehow acceptable.
Guys guys it's just a troll Like that makes it somehow acceptable.
No one said it was okay. Only criticizing the legitimacy of the motives behind the emails.
This happened at my college a few times when I was there. Someone gets a hold of an admin password, or staff member account then sends out a an email to the entire college register with stuff like this.
Troll or not, there person who did this is an idiot. Colleges take things like this incredibly seriously. My school has had a number of vandalisms in classrooms and bathrooms over the years where people write racial slurs and shit like this, and every time the university has stepped in. If they catch you doing that shit, you'll genuinely face academic consequences. We had a dumbass get angry at a poster memorializing the civil rights movement for black history month last year, and they tore it down and vandalized it because it showed a picture of a group of racists holding up a sign about white power. Person who did it ended up being a drunk black kid over the weekend who misread it. Still got in trouble, even though it was mistaken. Hacking the email accounts and using them to send this kind of shit could easily get you kicked out, and schools sometimes actually dig to figure out who did it. "Trolling" in real life is different than on the internet. It has pretty major consequences, assuming this was a student and not an outside actor. Doesn't matter what their political leaning was or if it was sarcastic or a joke or anything, they'll get ripped into by administration.

How pathetic. He/She forgot the mexicans and muslims.
They probably just faked the sending address without actually getting in the servers
I can go into my school issued gmail account and email literally anyone who has a active account. I just start typing and it spits out emails. Does not matter if I have emailed them or they emailed me. I am sure you can run a script that will eventually grab them all then bcc them all a email.
Aurenheimeeeeeerrrrr...
