Edited down for rule compliance:
A sweeping majority of citizens support Obama’s initiative to install new gun laws in the US, a new Gallup poll reveals. Two thirds go as far as supporting restrictions likely to usher heated debate between Democrats and Republicans in Congress.

When asked to prioritize between gun laws and school security/mental health measures, most Gallup respondents still opted for the latter.*

Murica!
whats with FPs unusually high gun support then
1,013 people does not equate to a proper sample size when comparing against 315,214,000 people. That's not even a percent.

Have you ever taken a statistics class?
snip
Or you could actually look at the image and see that these "9 out of 10 Americans" support something already in place while considerably lower numbers actually support gun bans.
I'm not sure if 1,000 people is a fair representation of a population which is 1/6th-1/3rds gun owner either.
Awful title
9/10 people support criminal background checks for every gun purchase, not the regulations as a whole
Have you ever taken a statistics class?
If you've ever taken a statistics class, you will know some handfuls will only be red M&Ms.
Awful title

Thank you, sample size is enough, but like Timebomb said the title is just wrong.
whats with FPs unusually high gun support then
Because most FP'ers know what the AWB is and why it's retarded, unlike most people who get their news from the sensationalist media

I would wager that Gallup is at least a little more qualified than you when it comes to making that judgment.
Have you ever taken a statistics class?
Well you obviously have not
I would wager that Gallup is at least a little more qualified than you when it comes to making that judgment.
It's pretty easy to skew stats. All you need to do is sample only one area (say the middle of New York) and they will not represent the views of the average American
[editline]b[/editline]
No automerge?
If you've ever taken a statistics class, you will know some handfuls will only be red M&Ms.
How fucking big are your hands if you can hold over 1000 M&M's?
Because 1000 isn't a handful.
Just so you know.
In case you didn't.
[sub]Which you didn't[/sub]
[sub][sub]Because you implied that 1000 people is a "handful"[/sub][/sub]
[sub][sub][sub]And it most definitely is not[/sub][/sub][/sub]
The results of the poll are based on phone interviews carried out January 19-20, when Gallup talked to 1,013 random adults aged 18 and older, living in all 50 US states and the District of Columbia.
Would it kill you to actually read the goddamn article you're writing off as 'skewed'?

Well do you have anything to suggest that, at least in this instance, they are trying to skew the numbers? From where I'm standing it sounds like speculation.

do you not think that gallup, the entire purpose of which is to conduct polls like this, might have possibly considered that
Gun's don't kill people.. people do.. un-arming citizens is the first action of a dictator... Hitler did it in Germany
(It is true)
The people giving box's are just mindless minions of the system which they don't comprehend
whats with FPs unusually high gun support then
I could speculate and say that I think it's because guns are popular in nerd culture and Facepunch is a gaming and technology-related forum
I could speculate further and say that nerd culture romanticizes exaggerated displays of masculinity and guns play into this
But I would neeeeveerrrr speculate like that
Gun's don't kill people.. people do.. un-arming citizens is the first action of a dictator... Hitler did it in Germany
Wow really dude? I don't think its even relevant and nice logical fallacy there.
Gun's don't kill people.. people do.. un-arming citizens is the first action of a dictator... Hitler did it in Germany
Surprising then that Bill Clinton didn't morph into a fascist dictator after the passage of the AWB the first time, in 1994.

yeah but it's also a british forum go figure

he was too busy getting impeached and pardoning drug dealers
That's a terrible title, it's like taking "90% of Americans believe creating jobs is important to curbing unemployment"
And turning it into: "Nine out of 10 Americans support Hitler's Ideology"
he was too busy getting impeached and pardoning drug dealers
Pretty weak sauce, if we're comparing him to Hitler.

you'd have some trouble killing the jews too if your dick was constantly in your secretary's mouth

It is speculation, but going by have crazy both sides of the debate have been, both sides will be happy to use every trick in the book to have their way.
[editline]b[/editline]
Even if it is accurate, I don't think this poll matters much. The impression I have is that the average person has not clue what the AWB entails, and how and why it will be ineffective. If you asked people to describe what it involves then compared that to their support I'd find it more meaningful

Is Gallup notoriously supportive of gun control or of lax gun regulation? How are they a "side of the debate" in any way?

It sounds like you've reached this conclusion before looking into it, and are trying to justify it with baseless conjecture.
Well I guess I'd better start supporting gun control then.
you'd have some trouble killing the jews too if your dick was constantly in your secretary's mouth
I hardly see what that has to do with stances on civil rights, economics, or anything that pertains to the office of the president. You might be able to argue that he was unfaithful to his wife, but even that has no bearing on his political policy.
[editline]24th January 2013[/editline]
And I've edited the title for accuracy, since the lowest percentage in favour of any particular measure was 54%.

Everyone has motives and biases of some sort

Not really, most people (not just in America) have no clue how politics works or what's in the bill they support or dislike. They just listen to the sensationalist crap the media pumps out then make their decision based on that
It's a perfectly reasonable request to see this data compared to peoples knowledge of the AWB
