Rock band R.E.M. is ending after 31 years and 15 studio albums.
[release]R.E.M. CALL IT A DAY
[img]http://remhq.com/cms_files/images/cms_image_7914.jpg[/img]
"To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening." R.E.M.
In their own words: The guys share their thoughts on why now.
MIKE
"During our last tour, and while making Collapse Into Now and putting together this greatest hits retrospective, we started asking ourselves, 'what next'? Working through our music and memories from over three decades was a hell of a journey. We realized that these songs seemed to draw a natural line under the last 31 years of our working together.
"We have always been a band in the truest sense of the word. Brothers who truly love, and respect, each other. We feel kind of like pioneers in this--there's no disharmony here, no falling-outs, no lawyers squaring-off. We've made this decision together, amicably and with each other's best interests at heart. The time just feels right."
MICHAEL
"A wise man once said--'the skill in attending a party is knowing when it's time to leave.' We built something extraordinary together. We did this thing. And now we're going to walk away from it.
"I hope our fans realize this wasn't an easy decision; but all things must end, and we wanted to do it right, to do it our way.
"We have to thank all the people who helped us be R.E.M. for these 31 years; our deepest gratitude to those who allowed us to do this. It's been amazing."
PETER
"One of the things that was always so great about being in R.E.M. was the fact that the records and the songs we wrote meant as much to our fans as they did to us. It was, and still is, important to us to do right by you. Being a part of your lives has been an unbelievable gift. Thank you.
"Mike, Michael, Bill, Bertis, and I walk away as great friends. I know I will be seeing them in the future, just as I know I will be seeing everyone who has followed us and supported us through the years. Even if it's only in the vinyl aisle of your local record store, or standing at the back of the club: watching a group of 19 year olds trying to change the world." [/release]

Damn, I would have to say a few of their tracks was the soundtrack to my childhood.
(Shiny happy people, Man on the moon, Losing my religion and Everybody hurts in particular were on the radio constantly)
snip
Its the end of the world as we know it...
That is too bad they were a great band
It's kind of sad seeing a band that's been alive for so long just die, and although I don't know any of their songs it still feels like quite a loss to the music world.
Well at least they brought us their condiment set

[I]It's the end of the band as we know it
It's the end of the band as we know it
It's the end of the band as we know it

R.I.P.R.E.M.
Nooooo
shit, they were like my favorite band.
These guys definitely made some of the best music during the 90's.
I'll still keep listening to them until I die.
31 years as being a popular band, through changing music eras, is a pretty big feat. rip
Well, I certainly hurt at this news. I didn't listen to them regularly but I got my fair share of their music when I was younger.
They're not there for us anymore.
I'm going to miss them forever
I guess all I can say is that I'm happy they broke up because they decided that 31 years was enough. Opposed to horrible break ups, like the Beatles over arguments, this is actually good. I'd rather see a band break up over an agreement rather then a disagreement.
I'm no longer shiny, and for that matter, I'm no longer holding hands either.
I've lost my religion!
nooooo
I did not like them.
The good bands are dying out.
Who's next? U2?
We're all gonna be engulfed in gangsta rap, gay ass club music and annoying as hell dubstep.
May god have mercy on our ears.
Ah damn, I'll miss those fellows.
Didn't listen to them much but I loved some of their songs years ago.
Better to stop when you're proud of what you have done than fall apart due to infighting and bad decisions.
I am devistated, whatever listening phases I go through to I can come back to REM and like it just as much as anything else. However, if the band are not wanting to do it anymore, the quality of the work is going to fall, which is not good for such an amazing band as REM. My favorite track:

Aw, I would have loved to see them live. Oh well.
I remember in the 90's.
When MTV was still good.
Got up in the morning put on the TV before going to school, and this song comes up. Your day was improved immediatly.

Now when I put on MTV, I get a re-run of "The Hills".
the future generations will be so fucked up.

Thank god. Next lets let U2 die.
[editline]21st September 2011[/editline]
Aww, I just realized I'm late. Kind of.
Well at least they're ending on a good but bittersweet note than an angry one.
End of an era for music :(
Its the end of the world as we know it :(
At least they disbanded as friends rather than hating each other.
Never heard of them.
